What's wrong with Radwanska?

A month ago I thought she would easily make the final 8 for Doha (via passing up Zvonareva and Venus). But recently she's been going out early in tournaments. Started out strong, but fizzled against Srebotnik. Looks like Venus will get the final spot thanks more to Radwanska's poor play than on her own merits.

Hope she isn't going the way of Vaidisova, Chakvetadze, Safarova, and the list of one year wonders...

Current "what is wrong with her list":
Radwanska
Hantuchova
Chakvetadze
Vaidisova
Ivanovic

Add Kuznetsova to the list as we all know what happens when she reaches a final.

And to think Safina, Zvonareva, Dementieva only recently got themselves off that list. Petrova looks like she's getting back on track.

Current "what is wrong with her list":
Radwanska
Hantuchova
Chakvetadze
Vaidisova
Ivanovic

Let's see:
Radwanska - lacks firepower (a poor Hingis clone)
Hantuchova - physically and mentally fragile
Chakvetadze - traumatized by that robbery, has not worked on improving groundstroke accuracy (goes down hitting or missing), fiery Georgian temper
Vaidisova - mindless basher and seduced by Stepanek (the true black widow). Been worse since dumping her dad as coach.
Ivanovic - injury, can only bash her way to victory or defeat
Kuznetsova - lives and dies on that forehand, sometimes a bit lost at the net, demons emerge when she makes finals
Sharapova - shoulder injury from doing that reverse forehand and her serve motion, transformed into Sharapova Inc., acts more like a model than a player (now with the son of a rich TV executive), clueless when stepping inside the baseline

Vaidisova has also put on some weight, but for the Hantuchova analysis; wasn't dealing with a foot injury?

Hantuchova injured her foot in May, but for all the years of her playing she only has 3 career titles. Safina (until now an underachiever), Serena (part-time player), Jankovic (the Davydenko of the WTA) each won 4 titles this YEAR. Heck, Wozniacki has 3 titles this year as well.

Vaidisova should take advantage of her height and build and be more of an all-court player. Her groundstrokes just have not held up that well this year.

@ Soyizgood:

This is off topic, but what are the last two words in your sig?

I know some Polish and I was trying to see if I could work from that and figure out what your sig meant. This is what I got: I love (to play?) playing tennis. Russian and Ukrainian girls something (maybe eyes, in Polish this is 'oczy') something.

Thanks in advance, I'm really interested in languages.

[Disclaimer: I am not saying that all Slavic languages are the same. I'm aware that I would get pimp-slapped immediately!]

It says Russian and Ukrainian women are very lovely. :) I noticed some similar words between Polish and Russian. Seems like 50% of Ukrainian and Russian words are the same. But I only speak a bit of Russian (Ya gavaryu nimnoga po-Ruskiy). :)

Daniela has never been the strongest mentally, and aside from hitting the ball as cleanly as she does, she is a not the best mover. With the amount of tournaments Jankovic has played she should have won much more than four titles. As for Serena being a part time player, this year's schedule is the most her body will allow. There is no comparison with those players anyway, because I don’t think Daniela has improved that much since she burst onto the scene in Indian Wells. I mean she did go through that weight/personal problem, which she got over, but she never developed much of a weapon.

Nicole on the other hand has a massive forehand, but she has put on some weight of late. She had that bout with mono last summer, but she got over it. You are right, if she can start working on that physical aspect of her game and building her game around it, the confidence will come.

Another one that everybody forgot and maybe for good reason would be Lucie Safarova, I still believe that girl has some serious game, but I have no idea what is going on with her.

I like how everyone in this thread thinks they can coach professional tennis players. None of us have any idea what is going through their heads and why their recent results haven't been so hot.

These players have been coached by the best in the world and are playing this sport at the highest level in the world and I think its safe to say that none of us should be decided how mentally strong they are and stuff among those lines.

You don't have to be a professional coach to be able to read stuff like body language, which can be a clear indication to how a player feels on the inside.

I'd agree with soyizgood with just about every player aside from Ana. Her main problem is confidence within herself. It's fair to say she's a completely different player since what happened after the French and she can't seem string a number of good performances together. How and when she bounces back will be most important for her and it's important she gets it together before 2008.

Great post! I remembered Safarova. Scratching my head trying to figure that out. Maybe problems with Berdych? That's the only thing I can think of.

Jelena played the same number of tournaments as Safina this year. So why this then applies only to Jelena?
