Who has a better forhand?

Carlos moya or federer? I like both player's forhand. i think their forhands are best in the business. who's forhand do you think is better then the other's.

Federer's is better. Moya has a great forehand but I am not sure it would even be in the top 3 right now, that shot has gotten better and better in the mens game of late.

Exactly. They're both big weapons but Federer has a shorter backswing and can convert defense into offense on the running forehand much better than Moya can on a faster surface. However, on slow red clay with time, Moya's forehand is more deadly.

***sidenote: I've noticed nobody here talks about women's tennis (other than the occasional thread devoted to their physical appearances). Well here's a shot out to Sveta who took out Kim today in Warsaw in 3 sets. Sveta has the potential to be an absolute monster on clay. She's like ASV but with power. I also believe she trained in Barthelona. Her extreme western gripped forehand and those legs are tailor made for clay. I will put her up as one of the favorites for RG & nobody has been talking about her.

I’d think in Federer has a better just because his is more of a rally weapon in which he can turn defensive shots into offensive ones. On the other hand Moya can bring more heat with his forehand than Federer can. They both have great forehands however. Other players with really good forehands I’d say are Nadal, Roddick and Ferrero.

I would take Federer's forehand over anybody's. Like somebody already pointed out, it's probably not the "best" on clay, but I'm not sure if it's mechanics or just from that fact that Federer isn't the best on clay in general.

correct me if im wrong but i think gonzales forehand is the best of all....its strong...it has height...and nice control

I'll go with Agassi from the backcourt. Lately, Federer's has been breaking down. However, Agassi's on the run forehand is strugglesome. The perfect forehand would be Agassi's rally forehand combined with Sampras's running forehand.

Federer definitely has the best mid court forehand. The angles and spins he generates with all that forearm rotation and pronation is just plain sick. However, from the backcourt, he can struggle with using too much of that forearm/pronation action (see his match against Safin at the Aussie Open this year or Nasdaq-100 against Nadal). His mistake tendency is to pull of the ball. I'd rather have Agassi's mistake tendency, which is to flaten out the forehand too much and miss long.

You are wrong!
I hate watching him. He hits every forehand with the same speed(as hard as he can), no finesse, no control. Gonzless is a mind**** r****d. His tennis is a torture.

No need for that type of name calling. Not only is it offensive in other ways, but its not too nice to his fans on this board. This 'mindless ******' is a top 20 player if you've forgotten.

singlehanded& that is true to some extant what you are syaing. but you are judging fed on the matches that he didn't perform his best. his forhand wasn't on fire, you should look at some of the matches which his forhand was on fire and then say if his forhand is worse or better then agassi's.

We dont like womens tennis much on here. The women nowadays make too many unforced errors, not enough winners, and are too out of shape to hold the interest of most of the posters. Serena won the Australian Open this year about 30 pounds overweight, and with virtually no commitment put into training or preparation.

As for Kuznetsova her nerves can be bulky on the big stage, winning the U.S open does not entirely disprove this, especially since she benefited from Davenport's injury which you would probably concede affected the match unless you didnt see the match; and did not have to play any recent slam champions-Henin, Clijsters, Serena, Capriati, Venus.

Moya may be one of my favorite players of all time..but as far as Forehands go I agree with 90% of the people on this board....Federer...
Fed hits angles as well as uses power and spin according to what he needs....Moya..although he sometimes seem to play matches with JUST a forehand..has a heavy clay court ball that opens the court for an inside our or down the line open stance shot (beautiful to watch).....he uses his forehand to set up his forehand. Federer is just deadly no matter what position he hits it from.
Roddick at his best all has one of the best forehands... not to mention NADAL...who has the heaviest ball with the most spin ...that seemed to break down Fed's forehand in Miami...why he lost is a different thread..

I'll go with Federer's as well...though Moya's is quite powerful. They both have forehands that are nice to watch, control, power, and great, smooth form.

I cant enjoy gonzalez either. way too mechanical - its like watching a robot play.

I would say Agassi is the most mechanical/robot player out there, and Gonzalez is more random. You know he'll hit the ball hard, but you don't always know when or where.

When I say mechanical I'm more referring to Gonzo's posture/body movement. He is just so freakin' stiff, unless he's completely set up for the shot forget it. Get him 1 foot out of position he has no chance. Zero ability to adjust. An apt comparison female-wise for me is Pierce. In contrast, Federer, Rios are good examples of more fluid players.

Okay if we are talking about fluid, languidity and finesse then Guga's forehand is certainly one of the best. A.ROD, MOYA AND FED have great forehands.

Gonzales is great to watch, nice to see him trying to breakdown every opponent through shear power and not hold back or choke.

I think watching Fernando Gonzalez play is very fun, just for the sheer element of unpredictability. It's fun to watch a player and know that on any given shot he can rip a winner or frame it into the crown. It's also great to see a top 20 pro with a high school tennis player's mentality. Have you seen the results Gonzalez can produce when he's thinking? He manhandled Roddick at the Athens Olympics. (6-4 6-4)

I personally prefer unpredictability in shot selection not in whether they will hit a winner or frame it. Federer personifies the former & I love watching him for it.

I think Roddick may actually have a bigger forehand than Gonzo. I remember watching a match between A-Rod and Safin and thinking "Roddick puts a lot more heat on his forehand." And at Davis Cup, his forehand was the biggest shot out of Ancic, Agassi, and Ljubicic, which may not surprise anybody, but it was the biggest by quite a bit.

I think Federer looks very 'natural' as does Moya's flowing forehand. He's been using it so long it is really an art. If you want to see an unnatural forehand, look at Nadal, or better yet, Roddick.

I think the biggest fh's are Gonzales, Roddick & Nadal
I think that Federer fh is more effective, as are the rest of his strokes !
The point is that big extreme strokes are overkill and not going to win slams without some smart tennis and great athletic ability. A hugh serve could win one alot of matches

But Nadal is like a different type of big forehand. Whereas Roddick and Gonzales are knock out, head hunting type forehands, Nadal's is more like heavy body blows. He's like the Julio Ceasar Chavez of tennis. He can't just rip a winner out of nowhere like Roddick and Gonzalez and Safin, he hits several super heavy shots to set up the winner, but in a way, especially on clay, it's probably deadlier for that very reason. And the next day his opponents will pee blood. [/boxing analogy taken to extreme]

Nadal's forehand probably moves faster after the bounce than before it...

I'll take Pistol Pete's Forehand ahead of all of them. He can hit clean winners off balance, leaning back, and even at full sprint. If I were playing him, I would actually prefer that he was in position for his forehand, since he seems to hit it about 10mph faster when hitting on the run!

Pete's forehand wouldn't last very long against this generation of players. It's only effective on grass (except his running forehand was pretty good). His serve really kept him alive near the end of his career.

The Sampras FH would be a feared stroke by any player of any time. He would have taken all of todays high bouncing topspins on the rise and hit winners off of them.

When Nadal flattens out his forehand it is every bit as fast as Roddick's. He plays the higher percentage shot though rather than going for all out pace.

Nowadays, I think Federer has the most beatiful, versatile forehand. He can hit winners from any place, on any surface. He has so much variety on that shot and impressive anticipation. And it's so effective, natural, elegant. Sampras running forehand was devastating!
