Who has the biggest "ego" ?

look: who right now is better than hewitt on grass except roger federer? who right now is better than hewitt on any surface except clay? injuries kept him down this year, as did bad drafts. he only played in 10 tourneys, far less than that of nadal, federer, or roddick. and he still maintains 4th cuz he always loses to the eventual champ in the final or the semis. that's not fair for him, and also, he's a nice guy, and what do you expect players to say, "I know roger federer is way better than me so i'll put up some bagels to worsen my record. Look at my ego gaix, i'm such a sportsman!!"

Is that what you call ego, 35ft6?

For Sampras that's simply the truth.

Please share your opinion

Mine is :

- ATP : Monfils

- WTA : Williams sisters

And please don't call me a racist, because it has nothing to do mith my choice <I'd chose Blake as the pro player who has the nicest charactcter and the most class>

Spinbalz, I think it's good that you say what you think.

This PC hypersensitivity has become ridiculous. If you like or don't like someone you should be able to say it. And if you don't like them because of the shade of their skin, well, that's just funny.

BTW, I didn't know anything about Monfils but I would have to agree with Serena.

However, when you say biggest ego, do you mean who's most self-confident or who talks the biggest talk? There is a big difference between these two types of ego.

I would say Federer has the most of the first type and Serena has the most of the second.

I don't know-I think that any time a person makes a comment about themselves, their ego (or lack thereof) shines through to some degree. Ego, as another poster said, is not a bad thing. We all HAVE one. For what Sampras accomphished, he SHOULD demonstrate some ego. I think he was relatively modest throughout his career, considering his place in the history of the game.

Yes, absolutely!

He wanted to leave his trace in history, and for that, he did all the efforts needed. When someone wants to leave a trace in history, or wants to be remembered as the best ever, it is a proof that that person has a big ego, even the way Sampras quited tennis <after a major win> was a proof a big ego. And having a big ego is not automatically a bad thing, as it has been said before, it is a trait of character that is probably needed when someone wants to become a professional athlete, the problem is when someone can't backup his overdeveloped ego with his results on the courts, Sampras didn't have that kind of problem, the Williams sisters now do have that problem.

Sampras did not intend to leave tennis after that win...he was euphoric after it, but he found that when he began practising again (before Wimbledon, 2003) his heart wasn't into it anymore. I wished he had played that Wimbledon, but I guess he knew better...I think he was 100% satisfied with what he had done, and he knew it was time to move on. The interviews he did around the time of his retirement (US open, 2003) suggest that he was leaving the game without any regrets.

P.S. I made a couple of very tiny adjustments to your quote, so I guess it's really a paraphrase. I hope you don't mind!

Actually Sampras had the most self confidence than any body else including Federer, but he did not express it outside as he was always very reserved and not outspoken. His confidence was his main edge over his rivals. Even in adverse situations, he always believed in his own abilities and came out on top. That attitude and toughness is very rare to find and Federer is no match for Sampras on that field. Secondly, Sampras definitely had much much greater ego than Federer and most other great players. His serious and unfriendly personality and character is a proof of that. He was always very serious, unfriendly, aggressive (atleast inwardly) and self obsessed both on and off the court and he never seemed to have any sense of humor or a casual, homely and jolly attitude. He always behaved as though he was a superior and extra ordinary human being and therefore he never behaved like an ordinary person. This all definitely shows his ego. But his ego was never exposed because he never spoke out anything in public and he handled the media and press in a very intelligent way that would not affect his image. In this regard, Serena, Monfils etc need to learn a lot from him. On the other hand consider Federer. He has a very good sense of humor and jovial spirit and is very friendly by nature. One can always notice a friendly smile on Federer's face which is very rarely observed in Sampras who often looked very greedy and ambitious. Though Federer is a great athlete and no 1 player, he is very casual and ordinary in his approach and appears a lot like a common man. The fact is that he is so plain and outspoken and that he expresses his inner heart and confidence and has nothing to hide which may create a different impression about him. This is just my gut feeling. Finally, as I mentioned in my earlier post, one can never judge one's degree of ego by what he speaks out or how he conducts outwordly. Ego is purely related to mental state and brain and cannot be indicated by what comes out externally through someone's lips.
