Forget about slams. Who is going to win the most masters?

Djokovic - 34
Nadal - 35

For me I have to go Djokovic because he can theoretically win any tournament if he is good enough. However for Nadal, I think he is only viable at 5/9 masters, those being Indian Wells, Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome, and Rogers Cup.

Novak is favoured at basically 6 Masters and by virtue of elimination at least 1 of 3 clay Masters. Nadal is favoured at the 3 clay and usually Canada.

Nadal. Djokovic is not so scary for the field in BO3 anymore, and there is no Masters tournament where he is as big of a favorite as Nadal in Monte-Carlo and Rome.

Nadal. He is lock up for atleast 2 in next two years on clay.
In 2019 he wasn't a lock at all. He lost to Fog at MC and Tsitsipas in Madrid.

I think Djokovic beats Nadal on clay this year like it was 2011. Anyway, Djokovic will almost surely end up with the most Masters titles. It's a pity Agassi, Lendl and Sampras often skipped them in their time because it was BO5.

I have no doubt in my mind that Novak Djokovic is going to go down as the king of the master series events before it is all said and done. He is the player with the most versatility across all surfaces in which these events take place, and I wouldn't be surprised if Novak pulls away before this year ends. He has the number one ranking in mind now, as well as that 6 year end title, and he knows that relying on slams alone isn't going to cut it. I expect him to overtake and then hold onto the record going down as the number one guy at these events.

Another reason why we shouldn't really compare eras. But in this era, the race is between Nadal and Djokovic for sure. Agree that Novak is going to come out on top here.

Both can reach the figure of 40 Masters 1000, which if you think about it, is crazy.
It is a good contemporary tennis record to keep in mind.

I feel that both Nadal and Djokovic are no longer caring as much about winning Masters. They both seem indifferent in the Masters at this point and are mostly using them to get into form for the Slams.
But OP told YOU to forget about Masters, not Rafa and Nole
