Who's had the better career: Cilic or Del Potro?

Del Potro, he achieved more and stayed at his top level longer and was a consistent rival to the main 4

Del Potro. But Roddick by far had a better career than both of them!
Roddick should be included with 2 time slam winners like Hewitt and Safin, much the same way Murray should be included with 3 or 4 time slam winners like Kuerten and Courier. Totally different level compared to these guys (especially Cilic as Del Potro played some great matches against Roddick).

I feel Del Potro is the better of the two though and certainly had more potential. Cilic is a Gaudio-style slam winner in my opinion, whereas Del Potro broke out in something more than a transitional era.

I said Cilic was a flash in the pan when he won the USO. His peak level is vastly overrated, and he's yet to come near recreating it.

Depo was different beast. He's showed up many times in the later stages of slams and gave Fedalovic all they could handle. He beat peak Fed in a USO final! Come on.

As much as I agree that Cilic is overrated, he did do well to recreate it by reaching the USO SF the following year which was pretty good. Although he only won 3 games against Novak in the SF.

DelPo's my favorite current player so I have to go with him over Cilic just for that.

But as far as stats go, how about these: DelPo was the only person to win a major other than the Big Four between 2005 and 2014 Australian Opens. In that 2009 U.S. Open he routed Nadal in semis and then took away Federer's chance at six consecutive titles at Flushing in the final. For Cilic's 2014 U.S. Open he defeated an already-crested Federer in the semis and Nishikori in the final.

Also, he's a class act. Intense on the court and from what I hear, very kind off the court. Plus always gracious in defeat.

Yea true it was a decent run, but I think the way he got run over by Novak kind of proves what I was getting at. Cilic's best moment outside of his USO title was a close AO semi against Murray in 2010.

Obviously Del Potro.

In addition to his 1 Slam title, he made 1 WTF final and 3 Masters finals. He has won 18 titles including 8 at 500 level. His highest ranking was #4.

Other than his 1 Slam title, Cilic has made no other big finals. He has won 14 titles, 13 of which are at 250 level. His highest ranking was #8.

Cilic is to Del Potro what Wawrinka is to Murray. In either case there is no comparison beyond the point that they happened to have same number of Grand Slams at this point of time. Otherwise no comparison in these two.

Murray included with Courier ??? Courier won back to back tournaments at two different majors. That is not an easy thing to do. Murray on the other hand is an expert at losing back to back finals at the Australian Open, not once but twice.

Cilic's run at USO 14 was fantastic no doubt. But beating 2009 Fed and Rafa back to back takes the cake.

There is no doubt that without an injury, Delpo may have made 3 majors at this point and may have had a career comparable to Stan/Murray.

People like Delpo better regardless of who did more. They look at Cilic like the nice guy who got hot and was fortunate to be at the right place the right time and take a big bite.

They look at Delpo as the nice guy who was always hot and dangerous to anybody anytime but was unfortunate to get injured during the best years of his career.
