Why does everyone seem to hate Andrew Castle?

Just a random question since Castle seems to take a lot of flak here. Please note I've only seen two matches that he's casted but I actually enjoyed his commentary even if he does goes off-topic frequently. So why does everyone seem to hate him so much?

He talks alot of nonsense and swoons over Andy Murray constantly. Imagine if veroniquem was calling a Nadal match...that's how bad it is ;)

He's a hypocrite (and smarmy with it). A few years ago he definitely did NOT "swoon over" Andy Murray, he was hypercritical and if he complimented him at all over anything it was a back-handed compliment.

The BBC got so many complaints from viewers about this that he smartly changed his tune. Hypocrite.

I generally don't mind him. He is a bit in love with a lot of players, not just Murray, so I think that's a bit of an unfair criticism, but he can lay it on a bit thick.

Going by what a few of the British pundits have said, they still have general members of the public asking if Andy is as good as Henman, who don't realise just how much he has achieved or how good he is. I get the sense that some of the punditry is a reaction to that, with them trying to make the point that Andy really is one of the very best, and it isn't fanciful to hope he can win Wimbledon.

I don't mind the off-topic and general rambling. It's part of the brief when you have long matches and rain delays. We have to remember that Castle has a lot of experience of general tv hosting, so he's not used to aiming his commentary towards the hard-core tennis fans, and has a fear of long periods of silence. Some find that patronising, but most of the time he's probably pitching it right for the bulk of viewers.

The main reason I'm happy to stick up for Castle is that he knows the limitations of his own achievements. He's good at working with the pundits who did achieve more, directing them in their commentary.

There are times when I wish he'd allow a bit more silence, but I still prefer him to the pundits who get all judgemental about players' errors, or who see commentary as an excuse to relive their own past glories.

His unconditional love for British tennis, especially Murray. Whatever he does it's GOAT worthy.

An example of his biased commentary:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAeFXIIq95A

Federer hits a crazy drop shot and what does he say?

Instead of "what a crazy dropper" he goes "pretty old-fashioned shot, Bunny Austin and Fred Perry would've been pleased with this"

GOOD FOR THEM I GUESS.

He gets stuff wrong pretty frequently. He has everything else that a great commentator needs, good voice, knowledge of the game, presenting skills and dashing good looks. If only he'd fact check more often.

I like Andrew Castle. There, I said it. Not everyone needs to be some huge expert of the game or the pinnacle of professionalism. He often balances out well with his co comms who can do more of the dirty work. He adds a good sense of drama to the commentary and makes sure that the discussion isn't always super technical.

He is soooooooo smarmy - it either comes naturally or is because he presented the vapid waste of time that was 'Good Morning Television.'

His commentary just seems lightweight. Like it is aimed at a 70 year old house wife who has never seem a tennis match before.

I just find him very annoying. I honestly can't explain why. Just the way he talks and phrases things etc.

One thing I did like was when he was commenting the Wimbledon final last year. I think it was when Murray fell over at the net, but Andrew reacted like a sympathetic mother watching a child fall over. Not hysterical, just very warm hated and if sounded like he genuinely cared.

I remember Virginia Wade reacted in a similar fashion during Heather Watson match once.

In not interested in boring open mindedness, give me a British commentator screaming "C'MON TIM!!" any day. Just as long as they don't get basic facts wrong...

Basically Andrew Castle used to be alright, but with Murray in his prime and achieving good results he starts to drool over him more and more.

I guess he's a nice enough bloke but he comes across to me as smarmy and patronising and a bit pompous. He has a 'know-all' air about him which is hardly justified by his grasp of the facts. His commentary at yesterday's charity matches at Queens was typically overbearing and, I thought, came across as a bit rude to Lendl and Berdych although he no doubt meant it jokingly.

I can't really take to him and inwardly groan if there are no other commentators I can listen to. Judging by this thread, I guess I'm far from being the only one!

Andrew castles head is stuck up andy murrays bottom, he keeps trying to find ways of squeezing murray into other players discussions (same as Jonathon Bellend on radio 5live)..

he makes basic factual errors regarding players stats..

everytime friggin pippa middleton is show on tv (which is every 6 mins) he feels the need to tell us.."oh that's pippa there, she enjoys her tennis (so what:confused:), and she is a very handy player herself" (so freaking what ?)

he plays tennis with david Cameron, also castle has a nasal whiny voice that grates, and he talks to much..verbal slime, onandonandonandon and on waflewaffledronedronewaffle...

and like Margaret thatcher he has had the same hairdo for about 465years.

He doesn't really read the flow of the matches that well and his hard on for certain players often clouds his judgement.

I remember Djokovic taking apart Nadal in the Wimbledon 2011 final and he seemed to be calling it in Rafas favour.

Goosehead

he does have a hard-on for players..he says stuff like..

"he's a solid boy now" "he's a physical specimen" "look at those muscles", "you can tell he has just come off a training block" "he is looking ripped" "he is absolutely in his physical prime" "what these two put themselves through is truly mind boggling"

usually this ****-erotic wafflefest is about murray, or nadal, sometimes djiokovic..its best to keep your exposure to castle to a minimum..a bit like radiation.

It seems a lot of negative comments towards him are because he supports Murray during commentary. But is that really an issue?

In every televised sport in the UK, commentators always support home nations. Not always overtly, but it's definitely there. (Football, olympics, rugby, tennis, cricket, etc).

Plus the vast majority of his commentary is to the British public on terrestrial TV. If anything, it would seem odd if he was cold towards Murray.

It was no different with Tim Henman. UK commentators were cooing over him every match.

This is ironic. I think he hates Andy Murray.

The first time Murray and Henman played on the ATP Tour, Castle was commenting and called it "a match between a fine wine and alcopops". AC has always adored Henman, and really resented this upstart Scot stealing Tim's thunder, beating his records, having Henman Hill renamed, etc. And to me he had a lot of trouble hiding it.

Nowadays he's much more aware of his audience's tastes, but if you listen closely there's still a darker undercurrent. He's very, very, very prone to employing the infantile "jinxing" technique that people like Clarky use when talking about Djokovic, i.e. Murray gets a set and a break up in a best-of-five, you're likely to hear Castle declare that "the match is over now" or some similar nonsense. He never does it with any other player, and I consider it childish and unprofessional to conduct himself like that. Judging by this thread though, it looks like most don't notice it.

I also find him not remotely knowledgeable compared to either his contemporaries (ex-players like Lloyd, Henman, etc ~ probably because he lacks any experience in the top echelons of the game), or especially the prior generation of old-school commentators (Threlfall, Barry Davies, John Barrett, Maskell, etc).

His early days were as a post-match analyst on the BBC, and he made me cringe from the start. Having failed to ever get into the top 100 in his entire career, I just felt he was out of his depth trying to offer insights on the top players. Alongside McEnroe and Becker he was grim, truly grim.

Al the Brit commies drool over Murray. They even drag in Boris Becker, Peter Fleming, JMac and anyone they can find to talk Murray up no end. I think it's actually in their contract to lay it on thick that Murray is the best thing since sliced bread. It got so bad at Queens that I sent an email to remind them that it's not the X-Factor where they have to get people to vote for their favourite, that tennis matches are won on court.

Mats Wilander is the worst commentator of all time. He is very easy calling white black if it suits his narrative.

its not that he supports murray..so do I, but he goes overboard with the gushing praise on murray, as does 'Jonathon Bellend' and greg rusedski.

He was apparently as highly ranked as no.80, according to wikipedia, not to mention he once reached the third round of the US and even took a set off Becker. I didn't know this stuff before.

It's the same for me. Nothing in particular, I just get annoyed listening to him. When I lived in the uk I literally felt he was ruining good matches, I would have to watch with the sound muted.

I've never known someone to be so bias for one player and hyping non stop. He said we have to put Murray in the GOAT debate and the nodding dog John Lloyd sat next to him even he was taken aback a tad. Lloyd basically is a mouth piece for the BBC he will be mr GB and mr middle of the road.

Andy Castle thinks he is more the leading man, the sex symbol for people over 60, mr daytime tv. He is a safe pair of hands like Lloyd and a ex-player. Thing is he makes atleast two mistakes every match he comms on and the nodding dog beside him lets it go. He also has gotten into the habit of silence whenever Murray is struggling or whispering quietly as he sweats in concern for Murray.

He will also will hype Murray's opponent to sickening levels no matter how good or bad they are or how they play and treat the public like they have never seen a round object being hit with a racquet before in their lives.

what did castle say ???

what issues in john Lloyds personal life  has he been shagging around ??...

I presume Castle just said "personal life" rather than being more specific, or else the apology would have been more specific I think. (That's just a guess though, I didn't watch it.)

It was reported today that John Lloyd, Andrew Castle's co-commentator during the grasscourt season, relayed Castle's remarks to David Lloyd and as a result the grey fox of British punditry has been sued. And in no time at all, Castle has paid David Lloyd compensation/legal costs for daring to impugn Loyd's reputation on live TV. Here's a joint statement from both parties:

"Mr Castle would like to put the record straight and express again his personal apology to Mr Lloyd. He made his remarks, which were completely without substance, in the hurried exchanges of a live debate. Mr Lloyd has accepted Mr Castle's apology and the payment of damages. Mr Lloyd and Mr Castle are pleased to have been able to resolve matters amicably and now consider the matter to be behind them."

Going back to 2002, right up to the present day, before Nalbandian plays Castle will say "What does he even do? It's a mystery. He doesn't seem to have any weapons, carries a lot of extra weight around the court which obviously hinders his movement, I don't understand how he wins any matches at all! Still, a Wimbledon finalist so you have to take that into account.".

That really annoys me.

I think most people in the states don't get too much exposure to Andrew Castle. To me, he seems like a good commentator. But then again, I've only heard him just a handful of times. And we have worse, I mean WORSE commentators here in the states.

You're Tracy Austin and you can get a commentating job, you realize how poor the standards are here. There's so many bad ones out there that keep getting work. I think we would be better off with Castle than our crop of peoples. : ) Maybe things will change in the future.
