30-something Slam three-quarters of the way to being accomplished.

And the 30-something non-calendar Slam is complete. The last four Slam winners have been 31, 35, 31, and 35. (So, the 30-something non-calendar Slam is completed with a year to spare: not even any 30-year-old winners).

As per the thread about Djokovic and Laver: will the 30+ or 31+ crowd complete the calendar Slam at the US Open or will the pressure of this historic achievement be too much, causing them to crack, and allowing a young scrapper aged 28 or 29 to slip in and break through?

The question in the poll states "men's singles."
Yes. Forgive me. Nothing personal at all. Sorry if i ruined the thread. I also think it is great that roger and rafito are playing well into their thirties (see also, the reigning us open champion, stanislas wawrinka).
I was just trying to make fun of Andeh Mooreh who plays video games and spouts off every chance he gets about this sort of thing. I also wanted to brandish the nicknames in a watered down Scottish accent.

30-something Slam completed. That's two 30-something Slams in three years: women's singles in 2015, men's singles in 2017. And no 30-year-olds won Slams in either year. So two 31+ Slams in three years.

Only one Slam finalist aged less than 30, too.

Funny how the most open slam in ages still has 2 30yo finalists. I would be very worried for the young guys if Murray/Djokovic/Stan successfully comeback by AO. This USO should have been the chance.

The Old Guard marches on (at least on the men's side)!

Right: it's not as though the youngsters were stopped by the big 3 + biggish 1 + variable size 1 this time. Zverev, Coric, Shapovalov and others were all in the bottom half, and Anderson, Querrey, PCB, and Schwartzman still became the final four contenders in the half.

For years, even multiple Slam finalists couldn't make Slam finals at 31. But in recent years, both Ferrer and Anderson made the first Slam finals at that age (and both got clobbered by Nadal, unfortunately).

Venus made two Slam finals and a semi in the year she turned 37. True, the winners were younger in the women's this year, but that may end up proving to be because of Serena's absence. I'm not sure she can come back close to her best, but she might do so.

One down, three to go for another 30+ Slam in 2018. And just three more majors until all men who have ever won a major are 30+. But I think that, in 2018, someone younger might finally win one. It's not certain, by any means, but it seems probable.

When is Cilic turning 30? Who else is on the cusp?

The only major champions under 30 are Del Potro (born 23 September 1988) and Cilic (born 28 September 1988).

Of players younger than them, Nishikori (born 29 December 1989) and Raonic (born 27 December 1990) have made major finals. Going into mid-2018, there will be no major finalist born after the start of 1991!
