Will Federer ever be back at #1?

Can Fed become #1 in future

For Federer to have a chance to be #1 again, he needs to either have Nadal not win the USO or to have a 2011 like kind of dominance during the indoor swing which I think is quite unlikely. Nadal's never been a great performer post USO which should play in Federer's favor, but Federer's form is quite questionable at the moment so who knows how many points he can really collect. If Federer doesn't claim back #1 at some point this year then I don't think it's happening ever again. An aging body, tons of points to defend in 2018, hate to pronounce the "R" word, but we're getting closer to that every day.

Basel & Shanghai would get him 300 back. Assume Nadal plays China & Shanghai and nabs like 600 points so he's still 900 ahead. Fed opts to play Paris and makes final to get back to 300 back. Then all he has to do is better at WTF.

Not impossible but it's looking unlikely now.

Bit of a shame. Would have been amazing to end his career with a new record. Oldest man to reach #1 in ATP rankings in open era.

I believe that would have been the case?

All he needed was odd 300-400 more points. Had he played Madrid alone, record would be on his name by now.

It's a farce indeed. One can get a cakewalk draw maybe once to win a slam. But Nadal will have won all 3 of his USO courtesy of the biggest jokes of draws we've ever seen.
Yes, only beat prime Djokovic twice. Stfu already. Federer won Wimbledon by beating CILIC.

The only player he DIDN'T beat at Wimbledon final was Djokovic and we know why, so, what difference does it make who you put in front of him?

Nadal will come off as one of the most opportunistic players of all time if that indeed come to pass.

It is not to say that his titles are less recognised. It is to recognize them for what they are.

Federer has not played any tournament after Wimbledon last year. He has all the chances to be the World's Number One again.
Well, all Nadal has to defend from now is Beijing 1/4 final-hardly a lot of points given it is a 500 tournament. But of course Federer usually does better than Nadal in the last tournaments of the year.

It's really unfortunate for Fed to run into an in form Delpo. I'd favour him against just about every other player in the draw.

It will be incredibly hard, he will have so many points to defend next season and he likely wont be making an appearance during the clay season again. Its hard to imagine that he will have the consistency as he begins to age more and more. This season really was a shocker but I don't see it happening again. In fact I don't think he will get another major other than maybe next year's Wimbledon when he comes back fully rested while everybody else is coming off clay. This was likely his last chance to go after it with Murray and Djokovic out but Nadal played the spoiler and has had an incredible rebound season as well. He is 36 right now and clearly couldn't last through the US Open even after skipping the clay earlier this year. Its not impossible but I think it is incredibly unlikely.

Nadal would have to lose at the US Open because Federer is not gonna earn 2000+ more points than Nadal does in Shanghai, Basel, Paris, WTF. If Nadal wins the US Open I think there's no chance.

Yes. At the end the game knows more about you.

Who thought that cilic was the answer. Defeating Nadal in quarters opened up all the possibilities.

And fed grasped it. Winning Australian open and then becoming #1 at 36.5 years is unbelievable
