Right off the bat I’ll admit that I’m not a Serena fan, so I’ll ask the Serena fans to be objective and ask where/how do you see another Grand Slam happening. Personally, I think it’s laughable that you are asking the present day Serena to win SEVEN matches. The fitness level has marginally changed over the 13 months that she’s been back, the movement isn’t going to magically reappear. More importantly than that is that the intimidation factor is completely gone. She’s going three sets with Rebecca Peterson in Miami, she was on her way to a 3 set loss to Muguruza, who’s struggling to win sets these days, before the sniffles kicked in. I just don’t see it.

Which is why I ask the question. It was a foregone conclusion she would. Even coming back after her child, she made it to the finals of Wimbledon and US Open. Everyone thought she’d win both of those matches. She didn’t. So everyone just assumed these were minor setbacks, but that she was still the dominant force in women’s tennis, so she’d win her 2 slams soon and own the record.

But s you say, that doesn’t look all that clear now. If I were her, I’d skip the entire clay season and focus on Wimbledon. Clearly her best shot at winning. Then play sparingly during the summer hard court season and be fresh as possible for US Open.

I’m not sure how many chances she’ll realistically have. How much longer she can realistically play. I’d say she only really has this year and next year. And if you assume she won’t win FO, that only leaves 5 more chances. So she has to win 2 of those 5. Pretty tall order if you ask me

I would concur that Wimbledon would have been the best shot but Kvitova looks like she’s on a mission this year and a peak Kvitova at Wimbledon is scary even for a completely in form Serena.

At her best, Serena is still the best player in the women's game. She is less than a year removed from two major finals. If she stays motivated, and healthy enough, she can continue to win majors.

Her presence in the game has been 99% positive and she has done as much as any player in history to grow the game. Whether she gets that "record" or not, hopefully she will stay involved in the game as a player for years to come, then remains involved in the game long after her retirement.

No, and above all, I don't want her to win the GS tournament in the future. Her misbehavior towards Ramos on the court and her subsequent presentation of its action as a fight against sexism outraged me.

This is what makes this topic absolutely maddening!!
When’s the last time you’ve seen that best? It’s not going to magically come back. Father Time is not slowing down. It’s happening slowly to Roger this season, who is in much better shape than Serena.
On the topic of those Grand Slam finals, smoked by Kerber at Wimby, smoked by Osaka at US Open.

1 more to tie. 2 more to have most singles slams all time.

Discuss.
There are only 3 players(Court, Goolagong and Clijsters) in history have won a slam after giving birth.

A tall order for Serena who is not in shape and the current field is not afraid of her anymore.

1 at most for me. Her body is packing in (same as Fed's but with less commitment to the cause than he shows).

Maybe 1 good run at Wimbledon/US Open left. God help her though if she tries to play Andreescu on a slow court.

She's lost her clutchness in Slams: lost both finals last year and choked terribly when poised to make the final at this year's AO. Unless the draw conveniently opens up widely for her I no longer have confidence that she can swing another Slam title.

God help her if she plays anybody on a slow court.

Safe to say that for the first time in her life Serena is mentally fragile? She can still intimidate with her antics, but other players are now able to challenge her bluff. She isn't playing enough to rebuild that confidence level. On the plus, Serena is much more fit than last year when she made 2 finals. Also, Osaka has looked a bit shakey since A.O...fallen back into the pack. So my vote is "Maybe" she will win one or two more slams.

I agree with you that she was not at her best since giving birth. Even at that level, she got to two major finals within a year of the birth of her first child. Is she going to improve? Only, and only time will tell. Is this the end? You do not know that. Nobody does. For some reason, that is "maddening" for you. Just read the replies above, there are plenty of people who are mad at Serena. Not me. I hope to see much more of whatever she has to offer.

Geniuses on this board have been claiming that she is washed up, since around 2004. Every couple of years or so, there seems to be another group that comes through proclaiming that Now This Time, Serena is washed up. She continues to prove the haters wrong and continues to be a force and win big matches. She has won more than a dozen majors during that time. The "experts" here have called her washed up for more than a decade. The future holds what the future holds. Only hoping that it is a very long future.

Serena can still show a level in one match that can rival the best women (see Halep AO). Unless the draw really opens up favourably, cant see her beating the likes of Petra, Osaka and Kerber in a row. Regardless, she has more than anyone in the Open era so her status is already secured.

I really don't think she needs another Slam tbh and it must only be motivation to keep playing. The true benchmark was 22 and she surpassed it. No one ever talked about Court's record as being that meaningful all these years or even when Steffi was playing. They treated Steffi as the true goat and like Court's record was inflated.
