Wilson 6.1 95 18x20. Hybrid Question

Been playing with the 2017 version of this frame with full poly from 45-47. Interested in using a poly/ multi or poly/syn gut hybrid to generate more power and mainly create a bit more feel. Considering Max Power 1.25/ NXT 1.30 or Luxilon Alu Power/ NXT 1.30. Any strings you guys could suggest for this 18x20 frame and what tension would you use. My guess is between 50-55 just not sure.

A poly/multi hybrid actually robs power from the setup. But with NXT being such a lively string you might be okay. The word on that string though is that it frays easily.

I just looked up Solinco Vanquish and it looks like a possibility for you. For poly/multi just lower poly tension 1 lb. below full poly and raise multi tension about 4 lbs. above the poly main.

Agree with muppet that will lower power especially in that stick with its dense pattern.

Nxt/alu would be better at 55/50 to start. That stick responds well to big differentials So dont let the 5lbs scare you

Dogma also says that the mains have a bigger impact on the feel than the crosses so if more feel and power is your goal putting the NXT in the mains is the way to go, especially coming from full poly.

I recently put solinco outlast/pro-stacked 17/16 (you can get it in one pack, unfortunately not on TW) on a prestige and was very impressed, played beautifully. I went for 50/52 which should be fine in a six one too.

Thanks guys, some great suggestions. See a good many players on tour using a 18x20 Wilson frame with poly mains/multi crosses or poly/gut. I haven’t tried that in a 18x20 so though it would be interesting. Multi mains may be the way to go like Shroud suggested.

Was thinking 44/48-46/50 with poly/syn gut or poly/multi to get a soft set up for the temps dropping. Thanks.

I really didn’t like ALU/NXT in a hybrid with ALU in the mains. It felt really stiff and robbed me of the characteristics of ALU that I like so much. NXT mains was a different story, however. I like NXT in the mains so much that it can even make Pro Hurricane (a terrible string, imo) playable in the crosses.

I string on a crank, which I know isn’t the same as a CP machine, and I also use the Blade 18x20, so not exactly the same racquet, but I’d recommend it. You’ll probably break it quickly unless you use 15L or 16 NXT. I shred it with a round cross in 5 hours tops.

Thanks, Madison Keyes is in there as well with Alu/NXT at 58/58. I have seen the benefits of poly/multi and poly/gut in the 16x19 frames. Interested to do some experimenting with the 18x20.

problem with going with what pros use is that pros don't give a damn about cost and longevity. They care about performance only.
Multis by their nature of being made up of multiple fibres will more easily fray with poly in a hybrid and snap very quickly.
Using a monfilament with poly in a hybrid makes more sense. So good quality syn gut, Origin, or coated multis like Velocity.

Alu/NXT would be awesome for about 5 hours but in a spin frame its probably going to snap soon after.

ALU/NXT lasts longer than NXT/ALU imo. The gummy texture of NXT will lock up the mains and prevent as much wear. Not saying that people can’t rip through the former hybrid, but in my own experience it lasts much longer—and plays much worse.

When it comes down to it, performance and the effect on the arm are most important to me. NXT mains go much faster (3hrs in 16x19 frames) than NXT crosses. Have a number of high level juniors that play multi crosses for comfort and feel. If best performance is the reason we see Osaka, Keyes, Edmund, Pospisil, Evans and others playing multi crosses that’s enough for me to experiment with my frames. Have some juniors using multi crosses looking for a break on the arm from full poly as well. Professional players have all options available and yet some still use multi crosses for best playability.
I’m thinking the longevity of strings in the 18x20 is much greater then in the 16x19 so the experiment continues.

I find Alu loses tension very quickly hence the awesome 5 hrs. After that it will play worse and feel worse and eventually snap. But the first 5 hrs with Alu is glorious.

Agreed. ALU Rough is great in a full bed specifically because it plays amazingly for 4-6 hours, and I typically break it in that time anyway. The only reason I don't like either version in the mains with a multi cross is because I feel it brings out the worst in the qualities of both strings. The multi prevents the poly from really digging into the ball, reducing spin, and in preventing the string movement, it also lasts longer than full poly (for me) which results in ALU dying without getting decent performance out of it.

I did not like Solinco vanquish. Low powered but good control and not much spin. Good thing is that it’s arm friendly. It’s not for me.

Going to string Klip Legend Gut 1.30/ Max Power 1.25 at 52/48. Playing at 47-48 full poly with TBHB7.

Any suggestions on tension?

Max Power is very stiff. Go 4 lbs. lower on the crosses, but keep 52 for the mains. I'd say 52/44. People have been stringing Max Power at that big a differential with good success. If that sounds a bit loose to you, maybe as high as 54/46.

Hmm..I play the same set up in a RF97 @ 59/56. Makes sense though with the stiffness of that dense pattern. Thanks

Strung my 18x20 with Max Power 1.25/OGSM 1.30 at 48/48. Felt much stiffer than playing full poly Tourna Black Zone at 47/47.

Max power is rather inert after strung like 4g, black zone is of the ilk that is pretty comfy typically.

If you prefer black zone you might like pro line evo

Thanks, have a reel of the Tourna Black Zone so going to just use that first. I am still back and forth from my 6.1 18x20’s to the RF97 with Gut/poly. The latter is definitely the easiest on the arm although I have not used Gut/poly in the 18x20’s. The season is here and I play well with both just going to have to settle on one this week.

Ok, after several hours of tennis this weekend I’m gonna stay with the 6.1 18x20 for the season. Playing mostly doubles and holding serve and returns are better than with the RF97. Doesnt hurt that stringing difference is $4 as opposed to $17. Tourna Black Zone 1.25 at 47lbs.

Arm needs a break from the full poly. Going to try Sensation 1.30 mains and Black Zone crosses in the 18x20. Thinking 52/48-55/51. Maybe 55/52. Anyone using Multi in the mains on the 6.1 95 18x20?

well after a couple of attempts at poly/multi and multi/poly and mediocre results I dropped the tension to 44lbs with the 18x20 and BHB7. 18x20 came back alive and so did comfort on the arm. Better shape on the ball as well.

@USPTARF97 Have you tried the 6.1 95 18x20 with gut m poly x?

The only time I tried it in my frame was at 48/45 and it was too low on the tension. Been playing BHS7T full bed at 46lbs and it has lasted longer than I would have thought. Have hit with a couple of 18x20 frames with a bit higher tension with Gut/poly and it was good. Next time I put gut/poly in the 18x20 it will be somewhere between 52/49-55/52
