hello. can anyone help me identify if this racquet is authentic st. vincent?
1txahWE.jpg

Q7PoSDb.jpg

the butt cap has "K N O" letters.

red primer?

po7PMV0.jpg
6PYnET8.jpg

the texture is matte-like; not shiny-smooth. bought it for about 100$ (5,000 pesos in our currency)
Also, the butt cap is probably KNQ not KNO which is also good (the Q indicates SV)

It's kind of odd, but the spelling on the "Made in..." sticker seems to be incorrect. It says "...Vicent" and not "...Vincent".

Ha I didn't notice that. Looked back thru this thread and on p. 10 someone else mentioned the misspelling. I think it's legit.

I am trying to replace the leather grip of my stick, does anyone know which type of Fairway Leather Grip to order? from TW's website there are different sizes of Fairway Leather grip can anyone advise?

So I didn't ask for advice on this because I wanted to try it anyway, but basically I slightly drilled out the string holes in my sv ps85 in order to make the newer (and the only affordable) replacement grommets fit, and it worked! I also had to chop up the grommets to make them fit.

Before anyone goes nuts, the affordable replacement grommets just would not fit, and I am not about to be sanding and shaving them. I was also not about to spend more on grommets than I did on the racquet. I want to actually use this frame as a piece of sports equipment. It was not in showpiece condition before I got started. And yes, I enlarged every single hole, even though many didn't strictly need it, for science!

I did it to the max, and used the throat grommet replacements instead of leaving the originals there, which were fine and could have been used again. The throat grommets weren't even the best fit sliced apart. Before stringing there was daylight between the grommet and the frame because the 2-grommet pieces were a tad too narrow.

With the proper grommet slicing and gentle drilling, the other grommets fit nicely.

My drilling tips would be to juuuuuust sliiiightly enlarge the holes. I test fit drill bits until i found one that would actually go through snugly, and used it as a kind of rotating file inside the hole.

This worked great. I didn't want to report on it until I could try it out. They just put the nets back up at my local court and I hit about 50 serves with it. nothing but sweet and accurate when i hit them right and no unusual vibration off-center.

As you can see in the pics, the grommet hack job is intentionally sloppy, just because i was curious. I even did it asymmetrically, making one less cut on one side. there's a little bulge there. but from two feet away, she looks sweet!

Lol i know. I figured I might as well own it. But my only goal was to be able to use it until the end of its natural life, and I wanted to learn something along the way. I have another, nicer one that I didn't molest. I might get the original grommets for that one and do it all right.

In retrospect I should have ordered 2 as oppose to the 1 re-release.

But then again with my knee I'm not going back on competitive circuit anytime soon.

I'm not sure about the codes, and I don't know that I recall anyone having a preference on gloss v. matte Taiwans. If you can get both, do it and let us know what you think!

If i already knew i wouldn't have needed to ask. The matte ones can turn glossy with time so that further confuses things.

Finally got a few quality hours practice with the Frankenstaff above and I didn't ruin it! No weird vibrations on off center hits or loss of control. these sticks are pretty tough. Still has that woody thunk feel.

This is definitely a powerful frame. I think I strung it too lose at 57 lbs. I was finding that really aggressive swings were flying out; I wasn't able to spin them quite consistently enough to bend them in. But when I stopped trying to show off and focused on clean compact strokes and flicking the ball where I wanted it with a balance of spin and moderate pace, I had the best control I've had from a racquet. Swings so easy too. Anxious to use in a match!

I love the PS85. I have a couple, I've sold a couple. Just picked up an extremely good condition PS85 Chicago for cheap. It's unstrung. Debating on whether to sell or to string it up and play it. Have a Taiwan in 7/10 condition I can't even give that one away haha. But I do love them.

Wilson Pro Staff 85, seems a St Vincent?
Any ideas?
no mention of 6.0
white buttcap red [W] stamped code below QTA logo with (R) trademark.
little red flecks at some grommet holes.
has a small black bumper guard
in about 8/10 condition
Strung with Prince Tournament nylon.
Will restring it with multifilament @55lbs when I have the time.
Been searching for one of these fine ladies for years.

definitely st vincent - probably one of the last of the sv production run before all manufacturing was transferred to asia/taiwan. last sv's had bc codes BxQ, AxQ or Qxx

St Vincent, great!
Didn't pay much for it either. :p
Strings are rather ordinary.
Might restring with Nat Gut mains / co-poly X's or full multi

Bought a Wilson Pro Staff Original 6.0 85
Chiao Ta manufacture

Original cover, vented at grip end.
Pro Staff text (not italics)
Grey undercoat
White Buttcap - CHY stamp above red W
plastic bumperguard

It's in fair condition.
Played a few sets with it & its like a scalpel, no room for mishits (put a few forehands over the fence) but completely brutal when hits in the small sweetspot.
Used a PS Classic 6.1 for most of my competitive tennis & one of my buddies had 2 PS 6.0 85's In the early 90's, always wanted one (or two)
Bought it for a great price from an old fella on a very hot day, who said begrudgingly he was "too old for the game"

Broke a string couple of weeks back, would be many years old.
Looked like Babolat syn gut, had a slight pearl shimmer

Looking of putting in Prince Syn Gut duraflex 17 @55lbs.
Needs a new grommet set but first like to sand back slightly & black spray over the chipped edges.

Just managed to match my pair of Prostaff 85. I prefer this version compared to my SV.
mmef4y.jpg

Quite heavy due to the leather grip. But need some customization as both are of different grip size. I was amazed by how good was the factory matched weight and balance of the old school racket compared to current Wilson QC.

I'm a big fan of PS85!
At age 17 I played a couple of years with wooden racket.
I switched to chip grafit Wilsons later.
When I fineshed university, I can aford to buy Prostuff 6.0 95.
It where mid 90x. And I was inspired by game of Courier, Edberg and Sampras.
I was blown away by performance of this racket.
But in begining of 2000x I wanted to try a new technology. I bought Wilson Hammer Hipercarbone 4.3. My firs reaction to this racket was Wow. Espetialy I felt my defencive game improved. But after a year of weekly playing I sterted feel that my technique degrade. I feel I can play accuratly near lines, I can't play offence game.
I bought a new PS95. I started enjoy my game again. Then I desided to try PS85 the racket used by my favorite players. The truth I afraed I can't play with sach small head size. But in my first game with this racket I was shocked haw stable and powerful it is! I made 3 times less mistakes compared to PS95!
Since this time it is my favorite racket. Every time when I do mistake with this racket I know what I exactly did wrong. It has such a grat feedback.
I tried Head Liquidmetal Radical midplus. This racket is joke. It is not accurate racket at all even for club player like me. I also have PS6.1 K Factor. It is not my cup of tea too. This racket is spin oriented but unpredictble and too headlite for my double handed backhand. It can spin and direct ball but it doesn't have feel and feedback like PS85.
Now I want to try RF85. Is this racket better compare my Chinese PS85 made in 2004?

Is there a serious concern for outright counterfeits of these racquets, or is it a case of being willing to accept a legitimate Chinese-made version? There are tons of them available on the site-that-shall-not-be-named.

No, to be fair the RF85’s paint job is cooler. Just not $100 cooler.
The price of 85rf is totally a rip-off in the name of limited edition.

There is a need for wilson to maintain the classic line besides the fancy new tech big head super light new rackets

It is the only stick I feel comfortable volleying. I also love the fact the I can beat good players who are more accustomed to the tweeter frames. That said, I was blown off the court playing singles against a heavy hitter who put me on defense on almost all the shots. It was such a struggle just to keep up...

Being frustrated (*and embarrassed), I pulled out the AI 98 just to change things around. That 13 extra sq. in. and extra free power made such a huge difference... I was able to play the attack game and hit winners.

Hate to admit it, but when playing against a real high level player with heavy strokes, I need to pull out the APD or the AI 98... The PS85 will be my main stick for doubles, but in singles, I have to go for something lighter with extra sq. in.

My PS85 is great until i play 5.0+ players who hit with lots of spin and pace...................

At lower levels you can rule with a PS85. Old school tennis it's easy as pie.

I played doubles on a practice court today. The matchup was a bit one sided and we won the first two sets quick, so for fun I played with the PS85 in a third set. Afterwards my opponents said that they thought I hit better with it. That will mess with my head for a while!

I've hit on and off with various PS models that friends had at the court. I was just gifted/loaned a PS85 and strung it up with synthetic gut at 50. I had a great time warming up with it last night. I ended using it while feeding Live Ball drills. The ball feed didn't say much other than I was still gleaming from the warm up session. This provided more spin than expected. It was a mid-sized racquet night as there was also a POG Mid and Mizuno Turbo Pro out that night

50# with power pads. Lots of fun!

Are you sure it's not JRQ? Can you post a picture of both the sticker and butt cap? If it is JRQ, then your racquet was finished in 1986, in St. Vincent. Production in Chicago ceased in '84. In fact, some racquets (namely the Ultras) produced in Chicago in late 1983 were finished in St. Vincent in '84, and were therefore double-dated. I have never come across a PS with a "Q" butt cap code that also says "Made in USA". If yours was indeed produced in Chicago and finished in St Vincent (2 years later!), it would be a significant discovery! However, the "A" in "JAQ" does not conform to the letter pattern I've observed on nearly 300 frames from multiple Wilson contractors; which is why I am quite curious to have a look at it.

Edit: What happened to post #888 while I was typing?

Yes it is JAQ and has a black sticker saying Made in U.S.A on a side.

I haven't posted a photo on this site and will try.

Thank you for the reply.

Edit: So, mine is produced in Chicago and finished in St. Vincent. Got it. Thanks for the info.

It is not only a nice racquet, but a highly unusual one! The stickers look legitimate, and that is un unmistakable "A" between "J" and "Q", making this only the third example out of those nearly 300 frames I've seen so far to not conform to the letter code system I observed (on Wilson racquets produced between 1978 and 2001). By itself, one might be tempted to dismiss this as an instance in which a worker grabbed the wrong die by accident, but when combined with the "Made in USA" sticker, the whole thing becomes a real enigma, for the reasons I mentioned in the previous post.

It would be very interesting to find out if there are other units like this out there. Surely it is not the only one in existence?!

Where did you find it, if I may ask?

Has anyone put gut/poly in a PS85? I'm currently using synthetic gut at 50#

I tried it and felt really nice. I strung it up @ 55lbs mains and 50 lbs crosses. I usually string it up with full poly at low tensions, but the natural gut hybrid set up gave it much better feel and pop.

I love the Chicago and St. Vincent version because they both have that unique feel. It’s hard to describe. I was using the Wilson Sting Mid, which wasn’t a bad frame, but when it was compared to the Pro Staff Mid, the Sting was nowhere near as stable or vibration free as the Pro Staff. I just felt in love from the first hit and really felt like an extension of my arm.

I’ve also played with Taiwan and Chinese versions. They feel very different from the St. Vincent/Chicago made racket. It was more pingy. However, aside from that feel - which I quickly adjusted - they all played great. Can’t really go wrong with any versions, imo. I just prefer the feel of the Chicago/St. Vincent made ones. I grew up playing with them and probably the main reason of my preference.

It’s one of those sticks that, to me, if you are a better player, you will completely dominate your opponent. If you have time to set up your shots, everything will be there for you - power, feel, depth & directional control for placing shots and spin. If you are playing someone equal or better than you that hits with lots of pace and spin, you will have trouble keeping up.

it is a st vincent code. the largehead was the first pro staff. all, except midplus 95, were originally made in chicago with three letter code ending in I.
