The racket arrived, and it’s in fairly good shape other than the grommets. I’m fairly sure it’s a Chicago version too. Now I just need to find grommets for it.

Congratulations, this is Chicago, the first letter is G not C.

The St.Vincent one that's similar to this (no head guard, tension recommendation 65-70), buttcode ends with Q.

Have you tried it? How about the flexibility? Heavy swingweight I guess.

I have not tried it yet, I’m worried about the grommets (see above).

Thanks for confirming. I just found this handy chart that further solidifies it’s the Chicago version:

This is great one. Just one mistake about the made in Taiwan. There is 2 versions of made in Taiwan, early version (in the schedule) wasn't made of "braided" graphite, was a stopgap as what Wilson manager said in an interview. The late Taiwanese has a recommendation on the throat for using "wilson synthetic gut", I do have this version.... Very harsh, very stiff!

Good to know. What are your thoughts on my grommets? Should I hold off on playing with it?

I figured I'd replace it because it looks like the string isn't being held in place by much in a few other grommet sections. I'm not sure how that affects the string tension and overall playability. But you're the second person to tell me the frame won't be harmed, so I'll give it a whirl!

Don't worry at all about the effect on the racket, it doesn't make any damage at all. I'm playing with my racket (Dunlop biomimetic 100), many damaged pins in the grommet, and this happened many times with me, grommets are not cheap:( (specially PS & vintage rackets). And by the way, Prince has many rackets that comes with no grommets, different design.

It will make that annoying sound when hitting a ball, metallic sound, so I recommend you to use 2 vibration dampeners, one left, one right, on the same line of the damaged pins, or use one of those long warm shape dampeners to cover all the "main" strings.

PS: Try to replace just the damaged pins, I did this to my PS85 (Taiwanese). Be sure it's the same size: length & thickness.

You cut a grommet piece just for the pins? I've never ventured into grommets/pins so this is all new to me. Thanks for the help.

If only @VGP were still around. I'm curious on whether he still plays with PS85 here and there and collects them.

Curious to know, all of these share the same string pattern but the grommet strips are not interchangeable? What is different between them? I ask since I have the last generation of the PS85 grommet/bumper kit TW sold (which I imagine was for the China #5 that TW sold) and read somewhere that it won't fit my SV PS85. Is this true?

TIA

I don't know why they don't fit but based on briefly reading old threads they apparently just don't fit. You have to make modifications, which is where I don't know how to go about it.

Guys, pro staff 85 old versions as Chicago, St. Vincent are not the same racket that is made in china, 2 different rackets (mold), the throat in the chinese one is wider than the others, the same with the string pattern, string pattern are different therefore they don't match.

But I've cut some pins from the chinese to replace the damaged pins in the Taiwanese, as in the picture.

For who used both PS85, The St. Vinvent & the late Taiwanese (using wilson syn gut recommendation).

Which one is stiffer & harsher? I have the Taiwanese, very stiff & harsh. I've heard the the St. Vincent is buttery, but the personal stringer of Pete Sampras said in an interview the the St. Vincent is Harsher!! He didn't mention the Taiwanese, but he compared it to the early chinese 6.0 85.

There are at least a few other variations of the PS85 that were sold.

I have a HyperProStaff 85 that seems to be slightly lighter. It weights 350g (strung + 1 overgrip).

I also have a green Pete Sampras Autograph version of the PS85. I think it, too, is also slightly lighter and the frame is 1mm or so thicker.

Is the easiest way to identify whether it's Chicaco or St. Vincent vs. Taiwanese or Chinese simply whether it has a wilson string recommendation and leather grip below the tension range?

No. There is a Taiwanese (early version) that is too similar to the latest edition of St.Vuncent, it doesn't have a recommendation of using syn gut.

I've made a thread that shows the differences between all PS85 Eeditions (based on your schedule):

Well my 10yo son used one of my old 85s in a tournament this weekend. I have cut it down to 26. I am pretty excited about the fact he likes it the best. And he won, and he has a one handed backhand.. And i hope he continues to play, he is amazing! But i can not afford to make him a pro player if he wants to...

You're a long ways from the pro player path. For now, just don't commit the mistake that most parents do: make the sport a chore or source of insecurity/anxiety. Let him have fun and learn from observation. He will continue to excel through constant practice and hopefully land a sweet scholarship from college, but even this goal is far from now. Pretty sweet to hear him doing well with the 85. It will make the transition to bigger rackets easier when he starts facing stronger competition.

You are right. I really dont want to make that mistake.. but it is a hard fight between tennis/basketball and Fortnite and other games on the ipad these days.. I hate it...And he doesnt have a lot of people to play tennis with. I am not sure he really has the desire, but he can do amazing things out there, and he can slice, backhand smash and chop on the forehand ala Kyrgios, and he doesnt overhit like many do at that age... it is very hard not to push, but i am trying not to...

One of my juniors playing 10U has a potential future in going far. When we do the match ups though in our team events he shys away from the number 1 seed in singles. Parents, Coaches, and other players constantly go up to him saying how well he hits, moves, and how good he plays. It's an emotional burden that we have recognized in why he shys away from playing the top seed in the team tennis format. During non team events he goes very far though most of the time.
Got to keep it fun...but we are able to have the tough conversations with him as well.

Coming back to topic of PS85.
I have two of early China (China 1 in table) and both butt caps code starts with "G".
In table for Line it says "C**". Is it a typo?

It checks all the boxes in Lin #9 except butt cap code. Primarily does not have a "6.0" in ProStaff.
I will check and post exact codes but both start with G, 100% sure.

The C is a typo and should be a G.

My Early China (Line #9) butt cap codes are: GHU, GJZ

I have a few with similar codes( line #9) starting with a G. It is obviously a typo.

Hi everyone

I wish to bump this thread to confirm about wrg5914 grommets.

Will these grommets fit with St Vincent and Taiwanese versions?

TIA

John

You mean Taiwanese version actually fit these grommets?
Only the very very last batch right before the factory move. I guess the factory did a test run of the new grommets before move the manufacturing facility over to China. The 99.999999% Taiwan made won’t fit.

I lined them up to seek if they can fit with other requiring some small fix. I will ask a stringer tmw for confirmation.

Bought two new ones in mint condition. Never used, plastic on handle, made in st. Vincent sticker on buttcap. Code is BSQ on both raquets. Has a "Fitted with a Fairway Grip" and a raquet instruction paper
with Chris Evert? picture hanging on the raquet. There seems to be some red color underneath paintjob.
What can you tell me about these ones?

Are there any frames that have the Prostaff 85 dense material, weight / balance, etc, but offer a larger head size?

I saw a few 90's that looked like good candidates, and then I was wondering if it were too greedy to be interested in that black, red, and yellow 6.1 classic 95. Is that anything close to the original 85?

Is anything?

Sorry if that's a dumb question, but it is an important question to me.

I think it's an excellent question which many have pondered imo. My pro stock h19's in 16x19 pattern come close after being modded. I think any frame to be close would have to be a thin beam, and then you'd have to add mass in the head while still keeping the stick fairly hl...................which is a tall order.

1) Pro Staff 88 (which is actually a 90),which is a PS85 on steroids!!!!!! - use 19g strings to make it more HL. It swings like a 95 imo due to huge sweet spot - entire racquet face.
2) A heavily modded Prince 93P perhaps?
3) A modded Wilson Blade 93 (all black version)?

I am really curious about the Tour 90's (there are maybe 4 options), and then the Original 6.0 95.

But once you get into the 20+ beams, does it start to lose some of the magic?

Thx again.

Curious if you went to larger frames and then returned back to the PS85 and any comparison between your experiences with more modern frames vs the PS85. Thanks.
Nothing is close. Tried about everything. Strange thing is the 90 sq in wilsons are quite far away from the 85. I string my 85s with x one at low tensions and hit pretty flat. Lots of finesse and net play. The rackets closest to, but not close was: Srixon 95 18x20 with cream. Head tour 2.0 i have also enjoyed the Fischer 90 rackets. The 85 is soo forgiving because of the control and accuracy it gives. Very strange and sad they didnt make a 90 with the excact same build up. I have tried bigger rackets all along because i can switch easily between rackets. But often returned to ps85 for match play.

Were your match play results better with the 85, and therefore the smaller head size had no negative effects? Just trying to figure out if you felt it was harder to trade groundstrokes over long stretches against opponents with larger more modern, powerful frames?

K90 was by far my favorite 90, but I would't say it played similar to the 85. I'd really suggest the PS88 if you really want that 85 feel. I believe it's the same layup (material composition fo the frame).

Yes my results were better. The opponents i lost against i would have lost to no matter what racket. Ps88 was kind of nice but very high swingweight.. sold it. I am very picky about swingweight and want low. Even cut some of the bumper on the ps85 to get it down to 315.
