Well they should start doing it again. In the figure skating I've seen, they never once showed them.
They would normally show them if there was some controversy with the scoring, which used to be every Olympics

Dude, the womens was so awesome too, more crashes and the fact they couldnt get over the first jump haha ;DIf you dream it, it will happen!!!
I was shocked when I saw this come on, and it was great. I almost skipped it because they advertised it as "women's cross" and I was thinking it was some sort of boring cross country event. They should change the name, but in any case, it was terrific.

So funny, im really gonna miss the winter olympics!
Showing images of the judges does nothing but potentially encourage controversy. . .
I only saw the women's event. Good stuff!
I'm going to miss them too. It's sad when one of the Grand Slams ends, but at least there will be another one soon enough. But we have to wait four years to see this stuff again. Bummer!
Even if your premise is true -- which is doubtful -- so what? You don't think viewers like controversy?
It's just bizarre and annoying from a general broadcasting perspective. If you talk about something regularly, such as the judges and the judging, you should also show it from time to time. Seems pretty obvious to me.
Have you seen Kim Yu's latest performance to win the gold metal?
Same could be said about showing the judges . . . so what?? Either way it won't make a difference. It obviously annoys some people but not everyone. What would showing the faces of the judges accomplish ??
.Do you just want to see the judge that gives a lower score from "x" country so you can critisize? There are no benefits of showing the faces of the judges.
Is stirring up judging controversy a good thing?? Maybe its interesting for you but not for the olympic commitee / Canada in general. The olympics isn't a soap opera.
I think its a smart move because it focuses on the athletes instead of judging. Judges are human . . . there will always be mistakes which is unfortunate. The olympics isn't about politics / drama. Its about the athletes and their dreams.
What does showing the umpire at the US Open "accomplish"? Nothing. The reason they show the umpire in tennis from time to time is because he's involved in the event you are watching. Just as the judges are in the Olympics.
What is the benefit of showing anything? The judges are part of the story we are watching, and as such, should be shown time to time. We see plenty of scenery shots of Vancouver and Whistler and sometimes the crowds and the relatives of the athletes. I guess those are pointless too since they don't accomplish anything?
I personally don't care much about who wins these things, so I'm not wanting shots of the judges so I can criticize them. It's just basic common sense to show the things you are talking about. It's kind of the whole point of TV. Otherwise, we could listen to the Olympics on the freakin' radio.
Of course the Olympics are about drama! The human element is what we like and what the broadcasters are giving us. They give us all sorts of information and images not directly related to the actual competition. That's how they build and maintain interest in the broadcast and the Olympics as a whole. If they just showed a series of athletic events with no color commentary, analysis, backstory, or occassional controversy, it would be pretty boring.
The reason they go on and on about the Canadian skater's mother dying two days before is because it adds to the drama of it all, get it?
Also wasn't impressed with the ski-cross event. Its all about the start. Ski's are too easy to control to really lose any sort of lead. I don't think I saw a single pass after the first 5 seconds. Not like snowboard cross where its more difficult to control. . . which opens up lanes for passes and such.
They show the umpire in tennis because it is impossible not to lol. And the players are sitting right next / go and talk to them regularly. That interaction is part of the game.
The olympics is different. In my opinion the games revolve around country pride and athleticism. It should be about the host country, the athletes, and the fans. Not about judges. Showing the judges, unlike showing fans / etc., does nothing but potentially disgrace the olympic comittee.
I understand there is drama. That is inevitable. Drama regarding athletes is perfectly normal and acceptable. Drama regarding race and sheer hostility is not however.
I would like to assume that most people watching the olympics are doing so for the sake of the athletes / sports. If they wanted to see drama they would turn on the 30 minute highlight segments so they wouldn't have to watch any of "the boring stuff". After all that is why NBC decided not to show all of the olympics with live coverage. . . So the opera fans could get their fill.
They show the umpire not only when he's interacting with players, but at other times as well. I'm talking individual close ups, not as part of a wider shot. They do this for the very reason they should do it for the Olympics -- that person is part of the story we are watching.
Disgrace the Olympic committee?? Why would you assume there would be anything negative at all about brief shots of the judges interpersed with all the other shots? They are part of the story -- much more so than the fans and the scenery -- and are often referred to. It's nuts and bad TV not to occassionally show the people you are talking about.
"Race and sheer hostility"? What the hell are you talking about? We are talking about showing occasional cutaways of the umpires, not showing the Rodney King beating video, for crying out loud.
The 30 minute highlight segment doesn't showcase the drama very well. The long build up to events, the backstories, etc, are what shows the drama best, and NBC knows this full well. Without personality, backstage drama, stories about the athletes lives, and all that kind of stuff, the games would be very dull indeed, a bunch of unknown athletes competing that no one has any emotional investment in watching. It's much more fun for me to watch Lindsay Vonn or Julia Mancuso ski than some no name person from Latvia because NBC has promoted them and featured aspects of their lives beyond their actual 90 second ski runs.
Don't get agitated. No need for it.
Your saying the 30 minute highlight segment doesn't showcase drama well??? Lol?? The summarize everything for you.
People who lack common sense make me agitated, sorry.
We are watching television. If you can't understand the concept of showing what one is talking about, or why that would be of interest to viewers, God help you, and good luck in your career in radio.
Exactly. They summarize it for you. That's exactly why it doesn't showcase the drama very well. How emotionally involved do you become from watching a movie trailer or reading a film review that summarizes the movie? Not much at all. If you want to really experience the drama of it, you need to see the movie.
GOAT performance.
Meh I put something insulting but your not even worth it. Im in med school so save your career advice for some other idiot.
36 and counting... with at least 1 more guaranteed... in Hockey
Previous record holder was Germany with 36 (Salt Lake City 2002)
Nice job with the 4-man bobsled team taking the gold!
Also... Kudos to Canada with 13 gold medals thus far (assuming they win the curling... currently ahead 3-0)!
I'm even finding curling quite exciting to watch..once you learn the strategy. It.s a lot like crokinole. (this game is a Canadian invention, like lacrosse and basketball. Yes, basketball. Believe it or not.
Canada has the highest Gold medal count. Pretty good for a country with 35 million people.
GO CANADA
