Winter Olympics so much more interesting than summer games

Im suprised that the big air competition for snowboarding / skii'ing isn't an olympic event. Maybe I missed it? I saw the skiing arials which were pretty cool but thats more like diving / technique than creativity / style.

Also wasn't impressed with the ski-cross event. Its all about the start. Ski's are too easy to control to really lose any sort of lead. I don't think I saw a single pass after the first 5 seconds. Not like snowboard cross where its more difficult to control. . . which opens up lanes for passes and such.

They would normally show them if there was some controversy with the scoring, which used to be every Olympics

It shouldn't take a controversy for them to show the people deciding who the heck wins Olympic medals. Would it kill them to show a brief cutaway of the judges after a Shaun White half-pipe run or some amazing freestyle skiing triple flip?

If you dream it, it will happen!!!

I was shocked when I saw this come on, and it was great. I almost skipped it because they advertised it as "women's cross" and I was thinking it was some sort of boring cross country event. They should change the name, but in any case, it was terrific.
Dude, the womens was so awesome too, more crashes and the fact they couldnt get over the first jump haha ;D

THe first hump was brutal wasn't it? When i first saw it i thougt the snowboarders were having a bit of trouble with it but i thought they'd change it a bit for the skiers.MAde it fun to watch though!

Yeee, i saw one of the semi finals i think of the womens, one didnt make it over the first, and one git to the top of the 2nd, did the splits and then slid back down on her back! So funny, im really gonna miss the winter olympics! :(

Showing images of the judges does nothing but potentially encourage controversy. I think it was a smart move and overall this olympics has been pretty fair. The only debate I saw was the american vs russian skater. Shaky quad axle vs perfect triple axle . . .

I only saw the women's event. Good stuff!

I'm going to miss them too. It's sad when one of the Grand Slams ends, but at least there will be another one soon enough. But we have to wait four years to see this stuff again. Bummer!

Even if your premise is true -- which is doubtful -- so what? You don't think viewers like controversy?

It's just bizarre and annoying from a general broadcasting perspective. If you talk about something regularly, such as the judges and the judging, you should also show it from time to time. Seems pretty obvious to me.

Same could be said about showing the judges . . . so what?? Either way it won't make a difference. It obviously annoys some people but not everyone. What would showing the faces of the judges accomplish ?? You see the scores everyone gets . . . Do you just want to see the judge that gives a lower score from "x" country so you can critisize? There are no benefits of showing the faces of the judges. Only problems.

Is stirring up judging controversy a good thing?? Maybe its interesting for you but not for the olympic commitee / Canada in general. The olympics isn't a soap opera.

I think its a smart move because it focuses on the athletes instead of judging. Judges are human . . . there will always be mistakes which is unfortunate. The olympics isn't about politics / drama. Its about the athletes and their dreams.

What does showing the umpire at the US Open "accomplish"? Nothing. The reason they show the umpire in tennis from time to time is because he's involved in the event you are watching. Just as the judges are in the Olympics.

What is the benefit of showing anything? The judges are part of the story we are watching, and as such, should be shown time to time. We see plenty of scenery shots of Vancouver and Whistler and sometimes the crowds and the relatives of the athletes. I guess those are pointless too since they don't accomplish anything?

I personally don't care much about who wins these things, so I'm not wanting shots of the judges so I can criticize them. It's just basic common sense to show the things you are talking about. It's kind of the whole point of TV. Otherwise, we could listen to the Olympics on the freakin' radio.

Of course the Olympics are about drama! The human element is what we like and what the broadcasters are giving us. They give us all sorts of information and images not directly related to the actual competition. That's how they build and maintain interest in the broadcast and the Olympics as a whole. If they just showed a series of athletic events with no color commentary, analysis, backstory, or occassional controversy, it would be pretty boring.

The reason they go on and on about the Canadian skater's mother dying two days before is because it adds to the drama of it all, get it?

We have different views on what the olympics are about. I have no problem with that but don't speak on behalf of everyone when you make opinions. Because not everyone thinks that way.

They show the umpire in tennis because it is impossible not to lol. And the players are sitting right next / go and talk to them regularly. That interaction is part of the game. Figure skaters / slalom skii'ers don't talk or get near the judges. If they did it would be shown. There simply is no need or reason to.

The olympics is different. In my opinion the games revolve around country pride and athleticism. It should be about the host country, the athletes, and the fans. Not about judges. Showing the judges, unlike showing fans / etc., does nothing but potentially disgrace the olympic comittee.

I understand there is drama. That is inevitable. Drama regarding athletes is perfectly normal and acceptable. Drama regarding race and sheer hostility is not however.

I would like to assume that most people watching the olympics are doing so for the sake of the athletes / sports. If they wanted to see drama they would turn on the 30 minute highlight segments so they wouldn't have to watch any of "the boring stuff". After all that is why NBC decided not to show all of the olympics with live coverage. . . So the opera fans could get their fill.

They show the umpire not only when he's interacting with players, but at other times as well. I'm talking individual close ups, not as part of a wider shot. They do this for the very reason they should do it for the Olympics -- that person is part of the story we are watching.

Disgrace the Olympic committee?? Why would you assume there would be anything negative at all about brief shots of the judges interpersed with all the other shots? They are part of the story -- much more so than the fans and the scenery -- and are often referred to. It's nuts and bad TV not to occassionally show the people you are talking about.

I understand there is drama. That is inevitable. Drama regarding athletes is perfectly normal and acceptable. Drama regarding race and sheer hostility is not however.

"Race and sheer hostility"? What the hell are you talking about? We are talking about showing occasional cutaways of the umpires, not showing the Rodney King beating video, for crying out loud.

The 30 minute highlight segment doesn't showcase the drama very well. The long build up to events, the backstories, etc, are what shows the drama best, and NBC knows this full well. Without personality, backstage drama, stories about the athletes lives, and all that kind of stuff, the games would be very dull indeed, a bunch of unknown athletes competing that no one has any emotional investment in watching. It's much more fun for me to watch Lindsay Vonn or Julia Mancuso ski than some no name person from Latvia because NBC has promoted them and featured aspects of their lives beyond their actual 90 second ski runs.

Don't get agitated. No need for it.

Comparing a tennis chair umpire to an olympic judge is just silly. The judges are there to settle disputes between players, keep score, etc. They are more involved than the judges in the olympic games who are there to watch and score. Thats it. They score based on a strict set of criteria to make it as subjective as possible. In no way do they have any involvment with the athletes performing.

Obviosly scenery and ambiance is not very important to your olympic experience but it is mine. Every olympics is unique based on its location, fans, etc. Thats what makes each one special. Not seeing a judges face.

This is my point. Showing judges has no benefit. You mentioned neither does showing fans or scenery. Quite the contrary . . . they contribute to the entire feeling of every particular olympics. Judges don't. Their scoring might . . . but you are seeing the score already.

Showing judges raise their scores or their faces in general only opens the door for people to raise controversy. While drama might be a good thing in some cases . . . not in this one. People are always ready to critisize. It only takes a slightly lower score from a judge from X country to raise hell. Thats not what the olympics should be about.

Your saying the 30 minute highlight segment doesn't showcase drama well??? Lol?? The summarize everything for you. I missed the olympics for a day so I watched the 30 min overview before I wen't to bed. I learned about Vonn's and her teamates controversy, Canada's aftergame binge, Canadian hockey players grudge hit, huge upsets, etc etc etc. Much more than watching cross country skiing for an hour.

People who lack common sense make me agitated, sorry.

We are watching television. If you can't understand the concept of showing what one is talking about, or why that would be of interest to viewers, God help you, and good luck in your career in radio.

Exactly. They summarize it for you. That's exactly why it doesn't showcase the drama very well. How emotionally involved do you become from watching a movie trailer or reading a film review that summarizes the movie? Not much at all. If you want to really experience the drama of it, you need to see the movie.

GOAT performance.

I agree. Although I was stunned when the announcer said Kim Yu was 19 years old (she looks 13). I thought for sure the judges would play the sympathy card and give extra points to Joannie Rochette (the girl whose mother died from a sudden heart attack). Very happy that everyone was professional in the way they carried out the contest.

That might explain it. Doctor types are often good at math and science, but a bit dense about real life matters.

I'm even finding curling quite exciting to watch..once you learn the strategy. It.s a lot like crokinole. (this game is a Canadian invention, like lacrosse and basketball. Yes, basketball. Believe it or not.

Canada has the highest Gold medal count. Pretty good for a country with 35 million people.

US... the new Winter Olympics medal count record holder!

36 and counting... with at least 1 more guaranteed... in Hockey :)

Previous record holder was Germany with 36 (Salt Lake City 2002)

Nice job with the 4-man bobsled team taking the gold!

Also... Kudos to Canada with 13 gold medals thus far (assuming they win the curling... currently ahead 3-0)!

7th end 5-2

OK 36...Canadians are always minimalistic.

Norway with a pop of 5 million has a great medal count

It took a random guy at a bar and and my neighbor, but I now understand curling!

And...my neighbor found a place near us that gives free curling lessons...we're gonna go give it a try!

I'm so incredibly bummed that the Olympics are over... I really enjoyed them a lot, and got into them much more than I had in the past.

One thing I'm grateful for is that I live a mono-lingual country and not some place like Canada. Having to hear everything announced twice in two different languages was maddening. How do they put up with that crap day in and day out?

Pick one language and stick with it, you silly Canucks!

Today is a really sad day. Wish the winter games would last longer. Now we have to wait 4 years and that sucks. The summer games will be ok but they are just not up to par with the winter games.
