Would you respect players more if they were more honest in their interviews?

I hate it when Federer says "it was a pity" when a match doesn't go his way, when we all know he is thinking that his opponent got lucky or that Federer didn't play well.

I hate it when Nadal praises Federer so much after defeating him. Dude, you are 22-10 against him, just admit that you are the better player and expected to beat him.

Humility! You've probably never even heard the word.

No ulterior motive at all.

I wish the players were more outspoken and didn't have so much camaraderie. Hugging at the net. Almost happy to lose to the other guy. It is gross in competition.

I wish the players showed more emotion. I mean Federer hasn't broken a racket in what 4.5 years? Nadal never has. Kinda lame to me.

We need more arrogant players. The top players are too humble. We need Tomic, Janowicz, and Gulbis to step things up sick.

Doesn't fly these days. Breaking rackets incurs a fine these days. Only a stupid guy will pay a fine to please some spectators who sure won't pay one cent on his behalf. Hawk Eye has prevented the JMac-style gamesmanship and bad behavior. Statements about nations, ethnic groups etc. will not and should not be tolerated - the cold-war style hostility does not play out well now.

I think it is dangerous to assume that one can mind read players thoughts and motives.

It may be that Nadal wants to give each player their due respect. There is nothing wrong with that. He can have his private thoughts about his chances.

There is too much money in tennis now. The days of bad boys like McEnroe are long over. Every top player wouldn't utter a word without approval of their PR army in order not to lose their endorsements, although it does get quite embarrassing when Nadal says stuff like "I'll have to play best tennis of my life to win, no?" when talking about some scrub in R1 of a slam.

Yes.

If anyone watches Formula 1 and have ever seen a Mark Webber or Kimi Raikkonen interview, these guys are honest no-nonsense straight talkers - it would be refreshing to hear some of that in tennis.

When it comes to interviews all the top players just blend into one, "I played well...bla bla....served well...forehand..., could have played better, I loved my opponent so much...looking forward to the next round"

I'd love some more trash talk too. All we need is some more CHARACTERS in interviews

I bet you loved it when djokovic screamed like a possessed gorilla behind Fed last year at the WTF final.

Say things directly against other players is not a good behaviour. The truth can be a good thing to say but it will certainly be a fuel to the press and they will probably use declarations with bad intentions or different meanings causing bad mood.

federer seems pretty candid in the majority of his interviews. how does the admission you're amazed by your own playing qualify as a remotely filtered response?

novak seems pretty honest. he's gracious but doesn't pour it on unnecessarily. nadal...well, I'd be interested to hear from the spanish-speaking members of the forum whether he's more forthcoming in his native language? Tried to start a thread about players giving interviews in their native tongues, and the differences that might exist relative to their english pressers, but it went nowhere.

Nadal is just being honest that Federer is the greatest, which is a fact. I like that.

Some of you guys want to see S-holes! Sorry, Nadal and Federer have too much class to be a d!ck.

Rafa would never say something like "Of course I'm the favorite, Roger's my b!tch!" He would never disrespect anyone like that whether he beats them on a tennis court every single time or not. These guys are not robot. They are more than tennis players.

One of the things I like about Nadal is that he always has something good to say about his opponents. He's always aware of the good qualities in his rivals.

If you don't like watching these guys, then don't. Go out and say nasty things about others and see how people respond to you.

I think you are mistaking lying and good behavior.

Let's say my woman friend is fat. Just because I don't say all the time she is fat and make fun of it,doesn't mean I'm lying. I say something like : Being fat is ok, it's not the most important thing, but being fit is amazing.

Doesn't mean top players aren't honest. They just use good behavior.
And Nadal and Fed really have good relationship on court, why would Nadal say bad things about Federer?

There is a difference between telling the truth and being a jerk and humiliate people.

And the last thing, how do you know what players are thinking? Psychologist say that it is impossible to read minds. I think that is why we have most problems in the world. What you interpret as someone giving you bad looks can mean nothing more that he is constipated.

And mostly fans use emotion to interpret statements of players. It's funny when Fed says something like he believes a match is on his racket, how differently Fed fans and Nadal fans take this statement. Nadal fans say Fed is arrogant, Fed fans say it is just healthy self-confidence. In reality nobody knows what Fed was thinking. I mean we can't even read and understand our own thoughts. Why don't fat people lose weight? It's simple, eat less and exercise more. It's because they can't read their own thoughts and emotions and they don't know their thought patterns that produce their emotions to motivate them to eat more.

Remember when you make a mistake, saying: What was I thinking? You made a mistake because you didn't know what you were thinking.

Fans mostly see things that they aren't there. So, I think this isn't the problem of top players, but this is the problem of fans.

I'm biased towards Fed and sometimes I see Rafa's statements in a different light. I'm the problem, not Rafa being dishonest.

This is not player's problem, this is fan's interpretation problem and arrogance of thinking we can read thoughts.

Yeah, I agree. I thought about it and Fed and Rafa are both great guys. I think fans are emotional and just see things that aren't there.

And I agree there is a difference between telling the truth and being a jerk. Just because you say the truth while being a jerk, doesn't mean it's ok.

And the truth is mostly relative anyway. If I believe Superman is the greatest movie of all time and you believe Batman is, doesn't mean one of us or both of us are lying.

Great post, jg!

I'm afraid, some of the posters on this forum sound very immature.

You're right, there's a big difference between telling the truth and being a jerk.

As a good friend of mine says "Honesty without love is cruelty".
I may find someone bad looking but I would never tell her/him they're ugly. I wouldn't be such a pig.
