Wait, we're getting a Sharapova/S.Williams already? I'm not sure anymore if I'm going to follow this match all of sudden...
No point watching. Very disappointing that the 2 biggest names in women's tennis never have great matches. Sharapova is at an even bigger disadvantage than usual, having virtually no match practice in months...

Not Serena's fault:)

I watch for the suspense...with their age difference, sooner or later Maria HAS to win. It's inevitable. When will it happen? I'm hoping never, but doubt I'll be that lucky. Also will Maria do those aggressive, dudely air humps if/when it happens? I say yes and I'm already a little grossed out at the thought of it.

People keep using that argument but it seems the older Serena gets, the more Sharapova loses to her badly.

Indeed. But I'll watch it just because it's their first match against one another in 2014...

But, I haven't watched a Sharapova/Serena since Doha last year : boring as hell !

Victoria/Serena finals are much more entertaining/dramatic than this farce...

Sharapova has only taken one set to Serena in 6 years lol, this is really ridiculous... even Eugénie, Sloane etc. trend better against Serena and they're not event THAT experienced... and this match seems like it will be going the same trend : beat-down in straight since Sharapova is quite rusty and didn't play good at all match against Kanepi.

Sharapova has 4 slams, I really wonder where she'll be ranked in history with that nasty head-to-head to Serena... I mean this thing could reach an embarrassing 20-3, 25-3 maybe even 30-3 at this rate lol

If Maria doesn't get a win against Serena this year and gets handily beaten by Vika and maybe one or two younger players, I predict Maria will fake another injury and retire for good.

I was a little surprised to see her back, to tell you the truth. But she does have candy to sell...

She's got a new coach, so she hasn't given up yet. It would be pretty funny if she retired before Serena!

Well, whether Maria retires before her or not,I know one thing. It will be a great day in women's tennis when Serena retires. Then the WTA can start again and we'll get back to real women's tennis

What is it now? Fake women's tennis? Can you tell me when it was ever "real" women's tennis?

JJ's new racquet looks good. seems likes she's getting more pace on her groundies (especially the forehand)...

Serena wins the first set, 6-2. Sharapova isn't even playing too poorly, but as always her strengths do not counter Serena's strengths.

This pairing is the classic example of a bad skills matchup - it's pretty much that everything Sharapova can do, Serena can do a bit better. Maria can't get Serena out of her comfort zone. And of course, the more Serena wins, the more the mental baggage weighs on Sharapova.*

*But this is tennis, almost anything is possible - maybe Maria will suddenly make a comeback. :-D

Feel sorry for Sharapova... she's bashing the ball as hard as she can but she still has not understood that it doesn't suffice against Serena Williams. No angles, no variations of shots... she really has absolutely no solution.

Maria played extremely well in the second set and actually put legitimate pressure on Serena. That's the least she can do to give herself some type of belief that one day she will be able to beat Serena again. At the end of the day, Serena is just a better player than Maria.

Wow, when I read the thread, I thought it was Miami all over again (Sharapova up a set and a break then vanishes). In fact, two sets but with a breaker. The universe's order is restored, Sharapova still has mental issues against S. Williams. In 6 months, it can make 10 years IIRC.

Sharapova actually has better footwork than Serena but not when she plays her. her feet seem stuck against Serena the last 10 years...

surprising that happened after maria destroyed serena in a wimbledon final at age 17. that should have given her a ton of confindence. after that I thought maria would start dominating womens tennis. she just blasted serena off the court that day.

here come the Serena-bots!

yes Sharapova on average has much better footwork than Serena! not footspeed but footwork!

successful slow players must have good footwork in order to win!

Excerpt from an article from last year.

Evert called Thursday's match the finest performance she has seen from a woman on clay. In fact, it might have been the finest clay-based performance outside Rafael Nadal or Rodin.

Serena said she surprised even herself with her movement and with the way she went to the net Thursday.

"That's one of the areas they've worked on a lot," Fernandez said of Williams' movement and balance. "Not just her footwork but her court positioning, too. For someone who is very aggressive and powerful, Serena actually waits for the ball quite a bit. She doesn't try to move up on the player and take little steps to move forward. But I think, especially on the clay, her balance is much better now. She's not as unstable as we might have seen in the past. I think she finishes her shots better, she recovers better and she's defending better. When you pulled her out wide in the past, she would have trouble getting back. Now she's extending a lot of points because of it.

I'm done with this argument. Sharapova does absolutely nothing better on the court than Serena. Hence the record she has against her.

Just watched recorded match. What a nail biter! Thankfully the ritual sacrifice has been made. The sun will bring forth the germination of dormant seeds and the wheel of life shall continue to spin in the proper direction. All hail the queen.

Maria has been working hard. What with her and Li's coach coaxing them into the net, I think we could be in for an exciting year. Hopefully not TOO exciting, as I want continued domination from Serena.

Serena's serve was so off today....I hope she gets it back for tomorrow's barn(owl) burner.

Didn't bother watching the match, knew what the outcome would be. Sounds like Maria did a little better than I expected, getting the second set to 7-6. Hopefully she takes the positives out of this, still a decent comeback after 6 months or so out...

Yeah,I wouldn't be that surprised if Vika won here, but she wouldn't beat her at the AO...

You must be joking. Sharapova has among the worst foortwork in history--how many times have you heard commentators talk about that problem. On the other hand, Serena's footwork is among the best.
