Yonex RD Ti-80 Review

Note: This review is based on the Ti-80 with the old cosmetics. They are the same, just a different paint scheme.

Design/ Comfort 7/10

Unfortunately, the racquet I owned is not nearly as pretty as the new Ti-80. Even though I am a sucker for classic frames, the orange and silver combo is not much to look at. Yonex definitely did the smart thing by changing colors to the beautiful red and blue combo.
That being said, the quality is typical of Yonex. Truly a well built racquet. It is amazingly comfortable, but not quite as much as the RDX500. It really falls somewhere between the RDS001 and the RDX500 in terms of comfort.
The grip is a very good base for a overgrip (not too cushiony, but not too firm)
The size of the sweetspot actually reminds me of the RDS001 MP. I can still feel the "buttery" sensation of other Yonex frames, but it does combine some of the "crispness" of the RDS series.

Overall - Really is true to the Yonex style. Very comfortable, and weighted just right. The lower score is based strictly on the orange paint (I am not a fan of orange)

Groundstrokes 8.5/10

This is definitely a strong point for the Ti-80! The low swing weight combined with the 12oz+ truly produces some heavy forehands. I was amazed at the spin that I was able to generate. The feeling on forehands is really hard to describe. It is a nice combination of the RDS001 MP and the RDX500 MP. Accuracy is a little less than the other two mentioned. It still allowed for some wonderfully placed winners, but I seemed to miss more than usual.
Backhands were incredible!! I know that the low swingweight really helped in this area. I felt my backhands were better than ever. I was hitting extremely heavy shots down the line, and occasionally some amazing crosscourt shots. The Ti-80 is great for 1 or 2 hands. Once again, the spin generated was truly a beautiful thing. I found myself wanting to hit more topspin shots....I am normally more of a flat hitter.

Overall - If you like the feel of the RDS and the RDX, then you will find the Ti-80 a good combination of both. I do wish the accuracy on my forehand side was better, but I imagine that would come over time.

Serves/ Overheads 9/10

Serves with the Ti-80 were extremely easy. I was able to hit incredible bombs on first serves, and get very good spin on my second. It actually gave me enough confidence to take some chances on second serves. Many times in the match, I would throw in some bombs on my second serve. This racquet allowed me to keep my opponent totally off balance and guessing.
Overheads were just as nice. The low swingweight and the overall mass, produced some smashing overheads.

Overall - The Ti-80 is truly a servers dream. I eventually will buy another one just based on serves. It was one of the few racquets that needed no custom work in order to fit my service game.

Volleys 8.5/10

Once again, the Ti-80 impressed! Volleys were incredible. The pace generated was exceptional, and the feel was great. The weight allowed me to pocket any thing that was hit at me. The racquet was very maneuverable. The accuracy did not seem to be a problem at the net, once I adjusted. The ball really explodes off of the stringbed, and takes a little time to get accustomed to the power.

Overall - If you love to go to the net, the RD Ti-80 will not dissappoint. It is balanced perfectly for volleying. One of the nicest I have felt in a while (without any lead-tape) Be patient and the Ti-80 will reward you.

Final Thoughts

The RD Ti-80 is going to be missed once it is replaced. It really combines some of great thing about the RDS and RDX. It will make any Yonex lover happy, as well as anyone looking for a great frame for all areas of the court. I would place the Ti-80 right behind the RDX500 MP in terms of comfort, which is not a bad place to be. Even with the accuracy problems I experienced, it is still one of the best stock racquets I have hit with. This is one racquet that does not need much custom work.

Total Score 8.25/10

Great review Jeff. I wonder if you could preface your reviews with your racket setup? Maybe provide string, tension, any weight modification, grip change, overgrip. Stuff of that nature. Thanks. Keep up the good work!!!

I apologize. I always forget to include that, and by the time I write these reviews most of the racquets are gone to a new home...lol. I'll make sure I start adding that.

He rated the Pure Storm at 8.75/10 and the Ti-80 at 8.25/10. I think that pretty much answers your question.

Now I'm curious about that Pure Storm. Must resist........:p

well, numbers dont always tell the story :)

but yes you should try the pure storm ;)

jdeloach,

nice review.
i agree with 99.9% of what u said.
i still use my ti-80s as regular backup.

i have to disagree with u on one point though.

i think the old paint job is MUCH CLASSIER than the new paint job.
It stands out because no other racquet have gold/black/silver.

and i think the new paint job is ugly.

just my personal opinion....

Thanks KO. I would have liked the paint much better if it were anything but orange. I personally don't like orange anything.

Hi there is the Ultimum RD TI-80 going out of the market?
Is the Ultimum RD TI-80 better than the RDS 001 MIdplus?

I want to change rackets but what will be the best? Just give me your opinion
thanks
I use the Prestige flex point 98 .

I , personally, believe the RDS001 MP and the RDX500 MP are a little better overall. That being said, the Ti-80 is still great. One thing to consider is the RDX500 is discontinued and the RD Ti-80 is on its way out also. That being the case, you could probably find some good deals.

The Ti-80 is on it's way out too? I did not know that.:(
I just sold both of my RDX 500. Well, sold one and traded the other.

I think one of the main appeals of the Ti-80 is its performance after being customized with a bit of lead at 3 and 9 o'clock. Although Yonex advertises their "IPS" weighting system, it's amazing what a little extra mass will do for this particular racquet. Unleaded, I found the RDX500 to perform better than the Ti-80, but when the Ti-80 is paired with the right string and the right customization job - it's among the best that I've experienced.

Just a question, jdeloach, I noticed that the worst category you put for the Ti-80 was cosmetics: due to your disinclination towards orange. How would you rate the 2005 version of the racquet with the red and blue paintjob - assuming that playability was the same? I'm guessing that you'd rate it a bit higher than the slightly modest 8.25 you gave this stick ;)

Changing the design score to a 9, would give the overall rating a 8.75

I put a bit of weight at 3+9 and at the top of the grip. It makes such a difference, the racquet just eats up tennis balls!

Hey jdeloach, what is your ranking as This review might change if it was for a lower grade player. (I'm assuming you are high!). Sometimes I feel that these reviews are for the really good players and when we pick up the raquet we (me) can not play with it. Is their any way of testing a raquet that would be better for us 'social' Players?

Besides that the reviews are great

Let me know what you want me to review, and I will see what I can do. I owned a Hybrid Hornet for a while. I can do one on that, and a LM Radical.

Yea I just tried the RDS 003 and knewe it was the right raquet for me straight away. Especially when I had tried all these other ones and none just felt good. So I would be interested to see how you felt it was.

Another Question is I thought the 001 raquet was a control raquet, with no power which you had to generate yourself, but when I hit with it I just couldn't stop hitting long, even with lotsa top spin. Then with the 003 which I presume has more 'pop', it seems just right for me, and I could hit with confidence, heaps of topspin cross court and nice touch all round court.

definitely it's a nice racquet. I've been demoing racquets and so far this is the one that i like. it's a little bit unstable compare to my ps 6.1 classic but it's a lot better to the rest of it's weight category. if only i'm not getting old with my ps 6.1, i would not think of replacing it. it's start causing me a little bit discomfort on my arm specially on my shoulder. surely this racquet will be missed too if they are going to discontinue it like the ps 6.1 classic.
