Yonex VCore Pro 97 HD review...

I’ve been playing with the HD’s for a few months and while I usually like poly/gut combos the racquet almost feels too flexible. Recently I’ve been playing with a full bed of Poly Tour pro and things have firmed up much more. My shoulder doesn’t allow me to play with stiffer polys.

I would not like the stiffer polys in this, or any other, racquet. I think it would be a real arm/shoulder/ wrist killer. Poly Pro, huh?

Not so much if you play almost exclusively with full bed of stiff polys. Besides, it's so much easier and cheaper to re-do retired poly in crosses.
Stiff polys? No thanks, ouch!!! I do not use that fullw estern grip so I would not benefit from a very stiff full poly bed.

Depends on your technique and physical shape obviously! Yonex Poly Pro Tour 1.25 is actually on a softer side, I have to string it 57-58lbs.

Yes, Poly tour pro plays a bit softer than other poly’s. I never usually play with a full bed of poly.

Yes, that’s what my experience with Poly Pro Tour 1.25 neon was like. Had to up tensions to 57-58lbs from my typical 53-55lbs for full bed of poly in order to tame some softness and power.

I tried this racquet with Grapplesnake Alpha last night. The feel on the racquet is even better than before, what surprised me was the amount of topspin, I would say it would be on par with the Pure Aero 2019 I sometimes play with. The control is excellent, string power is above average, but has excellent control. Flat service is a bomb, kick serve is greatt. Definitely the best racquet / string feel of anything I've tried. The control is excellent, the Alpha seems to be made for VCP HD. With everyone who said HDt is a bit "boardy", let them try it out with Grapplesnake Alpha. I promise you won't regret it..
What Tension did you string this?

I heard about that Grapplesnake Alpha but just couldn’t find 40ft set of it anywhere. Going 660ft reel blindly is kinda harsh.

Be interested to hear your results as I play gut/poly in mine exclusively. I tried poly/gut in my Gravity Pro and it was nice. Used Element in mains and VS in crosses.
So here my quick update on poly/gut hybrid in VCP HD. I strung mains with Lux 4G 1.25 at 55lbs (no pre-stretch) and crossed with Klip Natural Gut 1.35 (natural color with a bit of hand stretch only) at 60lbs. I use lockout MiStringer machine and pre-stretch is quite tough to do and stringing nattygut or multi is a bit of pain in a neck. Stringing polys is always a blast tho! I also used half a pack of Babolat Elastocross string-savers mostly in the center of the stringbed and a bit towards the hoop (there I tend to hit a lot of shots). First hour-1.5h with my poly/gut hybrid was a bit muted and too powerful for my liking but then strings settled and power levels became more tamed and I started to get more feel, slice and spin from these strings. It feels battery smooth and doesn't hurt my tender wrists and elbows at all even at highest power serves or FHs, despite having one of the stiffest Luxilon polys at 55lbs in the mains! I would never go full bed of this poly at 55lbs, 51-52 tops and my elbows/wrists will be suffering. It wouldn't be too bad because of low stiffness of VCP HD but definitely noticeable. I'm with 6-7 hours of hitting on this set and still liking it and gut isn't fraying yet, just looks a tad dirty. I'm in North California and wild fires got us real bad in 2020, all courts are covered in ash :cautious: I think I can get around 15 hours before I cut retired (low tension) Lux 4G and redo the crosses. Keep you posted.
Unfortunately I couldn't test performance in hot and humid conditions as some folks stated above but this hybrid didn't spray on me even then I was severely fatigued and in 100% RH but rather cooler condish. Full poly might spray more if it has 6+ hours of hitting on it. I mean my most favorite setup (so far) of blue Babolat Pro Hurricane 1.25 not tour version ATW 1-piece at 55lbs. This thing is king for up to 8 (maybe 10 if I'm lucky) hours before I snap it or I cut it off due to significant tension loss. And I found a reel of it for like 75$, steal!!!
And quick reminder for all gut lovers, keep your frames in cooler and dry condish then not in play, don't leave frames in your car, use thermal compartments of your tennis bags and load it up with silica desiccators (I mean little packets usually added to food containers and plastic bottles with vitamins/medications).

Thanks! I’ve got the GS Tour Sniper in there at 23/23 and like it very much.
Feel is crisp but a bit muted, not harsh at all.
I have great control from the baseline and don’t have to be afraid of missing long, which is very important for my game. Power and spin are easily generated by myself, so no help needed there. I actually love strings that don’t help me with extra pop or spin but are predictable as can be.

I’m sorry but I haven’t tried hg. I know I’m alone with my opinion on this string here but I don’t like it at all. To me it’s a very unpredictable string. The balls came flying off my string bed completely differently while having the same swings. Tour bite is a very predictable string to me though to me. I don’t know, maybe I haven’t given hg the right amount of time. But I felt so out of control of my shots, which is pretty strange for me. I am usually a very controlled driver of the ball.
I still think that Tour bite strung low is the better option. It’s soft, when strung low and has great spin and control.
But a I mentioned I don’t want the extra spin in my game, so the tour sniper is better suited for my game. It also grabs the ball nicely, but you can easily flatten out shots and step into the court. I like a low Lauch angle that I can control.

As I was expecting after about 16 hours Lux 4G lost tension significantly and hybrid started to spray. And since it's the main string I couldn't really redo it :cautious: I just use this frame for warmups, service practice seshs then I don't necessarily need extra control and don't have to hurt my arm. If someone is using gut mains and poly crosses then such hybrid can serve longer by redoing poly in crosses once it's done. Such setup gives me too much power even if gut strung well over 65lbs.

I'm growing on Yonex Poly Pro Tour 1.25 more and more now. It lacks a bit of extra grip that Pro Hurricane provides, judging by the amount of kick I'm getting on second serves. However, it holds tension much better and has same amount of feel and control. I don't have to restring all the time now. If Pro Hurricane dies in 10 hours for sure, YPPT lasts 2-3 times longer (y) and for some reason neon lasts and plays better than graphene colored one. Both in 1.25mm and both at 57 lbs 1-piece ATW. I believe the difference is in a bit of surface texture that graphene string has and neon one doesn't (it is completely smooth and slick).

Yeah, definitely give the Black a try. It’s the spiniest multi I’ve tried over NXT, Velocity, Sensation, Sensation Plus (awful), PPC, RIP Control, and even Triax. I’m mostly a gut/poly guy so admittedly that’s not that many, but I like a FB of NG or Multifeel every now and then and it may surprise you.

Okay so I've had black Multifeel for a while in my racquet. At first it just felt more crisp than natural Multifeel. Settled down after a few hours. Didn't notice a big difference in spin.

Gloss reflection stopped being a problem as it wore down.

It's not greatly different for spin. Could be the string pattern? IDK.

Didn't want to wait for my stupid package to arrive from the states so I got my stringer to fix me up. Here is my freshly strung racquet: Tecnifibre X-One 1.30mm/Yonex PT Strike 1.25mm 24kg/23kg.

Get to try it out tomorrow. I want to see if I can bludgeon my way to victory on-court.

Played with this again today and it's a lovely racquet, you feel like you can hit the ball however you like, with good accuracy and not the worry of hitting long. I also tried the Ezone alongside it but it just felt a bit too light and powerful for me. Maybe someone who plays with loads of spin can get the most out of it but I found I could hit out with confidence a lot more with the VCore Pro 97 HD.

I do have a dilemma though, I also hit with the Head Graphene 360+ Gravity and that was a very nice hit also, a different feel, but equally or more comfortable to hit with, felt very nice with the two-handed backhand too. Definitely low powered which I liked, as I just felt comfortable in really hitting out with it.

To me they are quite different racquets. Power is lower in the 93p and control is incredible with it. It seems like that you can string it with every poly at 40 pounds and still maintain great control. The maneuverability is better with the 93p and the sweet spot area is also very generous with the right string at a low tension. QC is not as good as the HD. My four 93p s were quite different and I had to lead them up to the same specs.
The HD is also quite maneuverable for its weight and it gives you a little bit easier access to power and it offers way more easy spin than the 93p. The feel and touch are also quite different as the 93p feels like it has a light dampener installed. There is hardly any vibration from the string bed. With the HD you feel a bit of vibration and if you want the same amount of control, you need to string it a bit tighter.
With the GS Tour Sniper, I feel I have the same amount of control as with the 93p and an almost similar feel (never played that string in the 93p), but just a tiny bit more forgiveness. But the biggest plus for me, and the spark for switching to Yonex, was the QC and general quality of the HD.
I believe you can play great, controlled and stable tennis with both of these frames. The Yonex might help you a bit more coming from defense to offense and when you are playing on clay, it’s easier to deal with mis-bounces. Even though the frame is bigger more of less towards the throat. I think the 93p is even a bit wider, almost GPro territory, than the Yonex. But you get used to everything.
After trying almost every players frame of almost all the big brands, I’ll be staying with the Yonex HD. Now I play my best tennis with it! Yesterday I won a match 6:0 6:1 against a player who I usually struggle to win against.
My testing times are over. Hehe.

Wow, I have pretty similar experience with VCP HD! I had some reservations after demo-ing it for just 3-4 hours and even then some after purchasing one HD frame. But then I dialed in and started to win these 6:0,6:1,6:2 kinda easy sets :happydevil: against folks I usually play pretty tight, two more HDs were on their way to Alex! I never tried Prince 93p but I had Head Prestige Mid 18x20 and I know what "frame which never misses" plays like! I string my HDs quite high, 55+ lbs and I'm getting similar "never gonna miss" feel but with some added comfort, power and spin. And man, hitting big BIG serves and finishing with drive-volleys or even bigger forehands is HD's jam (y)

I think I settled on 1-piece ATW with Yonex Poly Tour Pro 1.25mm at 57lbs. Have it on two (out of three) of my HD frames. Plays great, tension maintenance is good, try neon version first. I’m getting 20-30 hours of hitting out of this string! Neon seems better than graphite version IMO and you can see more of this neon string on pro tour (ATP/WTA) as well. I haven’t tried new blue version yet tho. It’s on my check list now. The third frame has blue Babolat Pro Hurricane (not tour version) 1.25mm at 55lbs. Nice string too but loses tension quite fast, works for 8 maybe 10 hours max for me before I have to restring.

Came back from the X-One/PTS playtest. Way too stiff off-centre, but I could hit some amazing spin with it.

Serves were good, nice jumping kick serves but ultimately too harsh on my arm.

My VCP HD was originally strung with yellow PTP @ 23kg. It's actually quite a nice comfortable string as a full bed. I had a little bit of trouble feeling the ball.

Since I bought it from TennisOnly, I could get it prestrung for free. With this particular string job, I felt that the racquet was wild and out of control with far too much power.

It's hard to say if it was strung properly because there was such a big difference in play between it and the demo which also had PTP. My stringer measured the dynamic tension of the strings and it was extremely low. I guess I ought to try PTP again, since I have several sets lying around.

That is quite high for a poly in an 18x20, isn’t it? Well, I prefer 23 kilos in this frame as well, but the Tour Sniper is very stiff and controlled, so I’ll even try 20 next time. With my Kirschbaum Max Power Rough I found 22 top low to feel confident and go for my shots. I usually try to take everything very early and need the confidence to not hit long. I’m actually standing on the baseline normally.
I also wanna try Poly Tour Pro in the HD as I like the idea of having a Yonex string in a Yonex frame... I prefer the colour of the black more as the gold logo catches your eye more. But I never really played both colours... haha.
To me feel is quite important, so I don’t know if this is the right string for me, as most people commented they had issues feeling the ball on the string.
Tour Sniper has a big booming oooomph feel when you hit the ball. I like that a lot.

Yeah, I heard people saying that YPTP has no feel at all and kinda dead. It wasn't my experience with this string though. I guess Nick K and bunch of other YPTP pros disagree about dead/no feel comments as well. What really feels dead to me is blue Yonex Poly Tour Spin 1.25 and I tried it at various tensions and in different frames. Yes, it got a ton of spin but nothing else IMO.
YPTP 1.25 neon felt actually very lively and too powerful at first in my go-to tension of 55lbs. So I had to up to 57 and it plays great now. I have lockout MiStringer machine and real tension is probably 3-4 lbs lower than if I used constant pull machine/crank up or drop-weight machines. However, RacketTune app and simple Tourna tension meter both showing reading over 55lbs then freshly strung. I remember everything over 55lbs was killing my elbow 2 years back then I had Klippermate drop weight. But it was Yonex Ezone Ai98 with 16x19 though.
I'm not too big on colors and color-matching and IMO 2019 VCPs don't have the most appealing PJs, kinda boring and old-school look. I liked bold aggressive Ai98 looks better.

Man, you are trying to compare string jobs from various stringers/places. I remember 3-4 years back I had to do and could never find a good match so I decided to string myself. Found 100$ used Klippermate drop weight and studied from zero. It's not a rocket science and I like the idea of honing my weapons :) noone messes with my 250$ rackets anymore! Klippermate was so so but a good start and about a year ago I got lockout MiStringer and it's a game changer. Super consistent string jobs (y) and it's quite affordable, robust and whole thing can fit in your tennis bag.

I like strings that are not springy and lively and where you can still feel the ball on the strings. The GS Tour Sniper is exactly this. I have a leather basic grip and a very thin over grip to get the most feeling out of it.
I used to string at 27 kilos in my old Prestige 600 when I was 16, but now I’m more down to 23 kilos.
But as I mentioned, I crave control and a everything that helps me, like springy strings, makes me lose confidence in my shots.

Same here, I like to swing big and fast. I have plenty of topspin in my groundies but there's always spinkles of flattened out high-pace injections! Such flattened out shots from out of balance positions tended to be all over the place with Ai98 and it's much higher percentage of same "slapped out of hope" kinda shots landing amazingly close to the lines :happydevil: then I use VCP HD! And same on serve being break point(s) down and going for the biggest serves or biggest kick on second is fire with HD. Ai98 felt kinda hollow and no power/no feel in comparison, so I sold all 4 of them now. And I string around 25kg and prefer medium to stiff polys, give me lots of confidence you talk about. Not a fan of leather grips, they give me crazy blisters, just use some soft cushy and slightly grippy OGs (depending on weather condish) with stock Yonex grip.

What is the main difference between a VCORE Pro 97 HD and the 310 version? I'm looking to buy one of those and I'm really not sure because they seem very similar other than the string pattern. Also, if I buy either one of those racquets, what strings and at what tension would you guys recommend. I would be fine with any suggestions for strings that provide spin and control that are budget-friendly, preferably under $20.

Go for some common poly strings if your body can handle it. I mean basically any poly option from Luxilon, Babolat, Yonex, Wilson, Volkl, Solinco, Head etc. will work in terms of providing spin and control and being under 20$. Generally tensions range is anywhere between 45 and 55 lbs, go lower or use thinner gauge softer poly if you need/want more power or have tender wrists or elbows or go higher or use stiffer poly if added control is a must for you and you can stand such beating on your body.

Hello, this is my first post, I have been reading a lot this topic and I would really appreciate some advice to get the 97HD over the ezone tour 98 (tour ??) racket

My current setup is a VCORE PRO 100, 300gr, with some lead on 10-2. Serves are Amazing, forehand gets nice spins, I manage good directions on the spot, but not super aggressive shots like opponent cannot shot back, not to talk about backhands which need a lot of efford to place them to baseline, definitely lacking power :) and need more practice from my side

I play with hyperG, 1.15 strung around 23-24kg

I was going towards the VCORE PRO 97 HD after reading all your comments ! having tried for few mins the blade v7, i thought that yonex deserves a try in the 18x20 area and i got used to the yonex frame.

But now the ezone tour 98 came out and I truly cannot decide ! anyone has tried both and can give realistic opinions ? my level is about 4.5, and my goal is to get more precision attacking balls in the forehand, bit heavier stable racket when returning balls back and easy to do a double hand backhand.. thanks !

I have been waiting to demo both, what would u recommend to check ?

I had vcore pro 97 310 for about a year and now i switch to hd for about a month testing for now so i dont if i had enought time to get to know the racquet at best.So the bigest diference is manevrability between the two and the fact that with 310 u can use only the arms sometimes but with hd i cant do that.In rest at spin 310 is better, at control same , stability and plow trough hd is better,
feel is buttery with hd, crisp but comfy with 310.Regarding the shots backhand , voleys ,smash, and first serve are better with hd,forehand and second serve may be better with 310 but that will depend a lot of ur tenique if u use ur body hd may be better if ur use ur arm 310 is better.
The problem that bother me with 310 is that against fast paced shots from good players i lacked the plow trough and stability sometimes and i was pushed back as long and that i couldnt play with poly strings with it as long as with hd i have no problem using poly because of better plow trough.
So from my point of view i would pick acording with ur tehnique, if u use ur body and just let arm finish stroke go with hd all day long , if u are using more arms and u have strong arms also go with 310 clearly or if u want learn to use more body and the corect tehnique hd is good for practice that, because u will lack power if use only ur arm

ezone tour is pretty heavy i from her specification i wouldnt recomand if u are not a very advanced player, even a top200 atp player confirmed me that for him is good but he think also that for amateur will be too heavy.

Thank yo Agradina ! much appreciated ! I really like the easy spin of the vcore pro 100, but need definitely more control and power and stability when it comes to defensive balls, thus looking into the 97HD as I said.

But I still cannot decide if I should go for the ezone 98 or not. Arm issues I do not have , maybe if I hit 30 first serves, then my arm will definitely hurt :) Anyone tried both ezone 98 and vcore 97hd and can give me some insights ? thanks !!!

ezone tour is pretty heavy i from her specification i wouldnt recomand if u are not a very advanced player, even a top200 atp player confirmed me that for him is good but he think also that for amateur will be too heavy.

If i am not mistaken, the VCore Pro 97 HD is 320g and the Ezone 98 tour 315, according to yonex.com , so both are heavy rackets ..

What is the main difference between a VCORE Pro 97 HD and the 310 version? I'm looking to buy one of those and I'm really not sure because they seem very similar other than the string pattern. Also, if I buy either one of those racquets, what strings and at what tension would you guys recommend. I would be fine with any suggestions for strings that provide spin and control that are budget-friendly, preferably under $20.

the 310 is has a slightly higher launch angle and is easier to accelerate. It feels like it has less weight through the middle and as a result a tad less stable.

the HD hits with more precision on flat hard shots. It is more maneuverable than many players frames especially 18x20 while less than the 310. The flex is more pleasant to me, which I feel largely relates to timing and clean contact.

When trying a new frame I would recommend using a string and tension you are very familiar with. In doing that you gain much insight into the racquet and are not evaluating two things and trying to determine what properties belong to which.

Then this will definitely be my next racket ! I hope it is considered as an "upgrade" from vcore pro 100 (300g)
VCP HD will obviously challenge you more to keep hitting consistently heavy ball for extended times. Someone already said that you'll have to use your body [rotations] as opposed to powering with the arm. The latter is OK with tweener frame like vcore pro 100 (300g) and most likely won't work with VCP HD, unless you wanna experiment with gut or gut-like powerful strings.

310 feels flexy at upper hoop and more unstable. Also has less power that HD, but still more maneuverable.
HD has more mass, more power and you can hit better with heavy hitters. Also it's maneuverability is good for it's weight
