Your top 5 Federer matches???

Youtube vids would be preferable. Hasn't anyone ever done a "best of Fed" thread? Here are my top 5 Fed matches in which he came out victorious:

1.
- My favorite, to me it was the start of Federer's renaissance to the top of the rankings in 2012.

2.
- Underrated match and a ballsy comeback.

3.
- Federer's breakthrough match, underrated as Sampras was the defending champion. Federer played really well and this was the "passing of the torch".

4.
- As good if not better in terms of quality than their Wimbledon 2008/Australian Open 2009 encounters.

5.
- This match nearly ended Federer's dreams of the French Open in 2009, Haas was within a whisker of going 5-3 in the 3rd set. A brave comeback and his match vs Del Potro shown his wasn't going to let go of the career slam dream.

1.Fed vs Djokovic Wimbledon 2012

3.Fed vs Del Potro Olypmics 2012
4.Fed vs Cilic Wimbledon 2015
5.Fed vs wawrinka wtf 2015

As you can see I'm a big fan of Wimbledon :p

Some favourites all for different reasons, not in order.

1. French Open Final 2009 - Loved the way Roger seized his chance here. That tiebreak in the second set was just crazy clutch and the emotion at the end...just hugely satisfying to watch as a fan.

2. Tennis Masters Cup 2003 - "Ice in the veins" high quality match and the emergence of peak Federer. Great shotmaking and clutchness to seal the match.

3. USO 2005 SF & F - Cheating a bit here including both for the same reason. Neither of these matches would be in Federer's top draw in terms of quality but I just really enjoy them. I like the explosiveness of Federer and the intensity of those middle two sets in both. But it is somewhat of an odd choice.

4. Wimbledon 2007 - Great final against Nadal, tons if shotmaking and an awesome level. That rally to break in the fifth is one of my all time favourites.

5. Olympics 2012 - Epic match. Federer held serve to stay in the match an ungodly amount of times. The emotion and determination make it a special match for me.

2. 2009 RG final - completed the set after so many tries and tied Pete with 14
3. 2001 Wimbeldon R4 - his official breakthrough match

Who cares? They're all exactly the same anyway.

Oh wait, that's not him, that's every other player in the ATP.

At favorite Federer tournaments I would also add WTF 2010.

Fed was a bit past his prime at that time but he rolled back the years in effortlessly dispatching Ferrer,Murray,Soderling,Djokovic and Nadal. Pretty much a peak tournament for him, to me on par or even better than TMC 2004.

Top 5 favorite matches against top 5 players based on level of play:

USO 2004 final against Hewitt
FO 2011 SF against Djokovic
Wimb 2015 SF against Murray
WTF 2011 RR against Nadal
Shanghai 2014 SF against Djokovic

That UO 2004 match and one against Nadal at WTF were really poor performances from his opponents. I can understand why you would chose those matches because I have seen his extreme level in those matches but it's a lot different when you are facing similar level of resistance from your opponent. Something interesting, I was having an argument with a reasonable Fed fan friend of mine who said Nadal was totally outclassed by Fed that day and Nadal's level was very high, which I couldnt agree with and we decided to rewatch the match together on youtube. We were both watching the same match, together, and he found Nadal's level reasonably high while I found it pretty poor. It's astonishing how much our perceptions can vary.

Fed put on a clinic in that WC 2015 SF match, Murray was totally outclassed. It should be academic stuff for generations to learn :)

I don't see how it can make sense to say that Nadal's level there was high by his standards. He wasn't in full 2015dal mode, though. I'd classify it as below average for him, but it still took a very high level to pummel him like that. Fed was uncharacteristically supreme on both FH and BH that day. :)
In absolute terms, RG '15 QF was the same, but since Nadal's average level is much higher on clay than anywhere else, it shows how further down from average he was at the time than even during some of his previous beatdowns.
Waiting for Nadal to resurrect next season...

There wasn't much Nadal could do that day against Fed at WTF 2011. Fed served amazing, keep rallies short, and dictated play from the get go. Backhand was extremely solid. No lapses at all. Constantly rushing Rafa through out. Obviously Rafa wasn't at his best, but Fed had a lot to do with that. Reminds me of the 1st set of Dubai 2006. 6/2 score there didn't do Fed justice. He was ridiculously good.

It wasn't just that Nadal was below par but he was way below par. Too passive, played enough short balls. He hit 4 winners and 7 errors overall in a 2 set match. Nadal would have anyway lost in any form..

The US Open match against Agassi when the wind was blowing hard. That lovely hair in motion. Petch was mesmerized and so was I, quite frankly.

Australian Open 2005 vs Safin.

Nalbandian at the Masters Cup 2005 final. I go back to this match on youtube now and again.

French Open 2011 vs Djokovic. Finger poke (point) of doom. Whatcha gonna do when Federer points his finger at you, Jack???

US Open 2004 vs Hewitt. Maybe the ultimate god mode performance, but then, Hewitt was the opponent, so I don't know.

Tomorrow, I could select another five. Don't hold me to this. So many options.

Hewitt was a 2 time slam champion, former no.1 and former USO champion. Demolishing a guy like that is no small feat.

It's not like he played a guy like Nieminen in the final.

Hewitt was on a big win streak as well and hadn't dropped a set. For Federer to take the racquet out of his hands like that was massive.

How many winners and errors?

Federer had W 96 UE 64, Tipsarevic had W 52 UE 47

He hit more winners here than he did against Safin and Nalby in 2005:eek:
