Your top 5 picks for the US OPEN (Women)

1. Kim Clijsters- lots of match play. Loads of confidence. Had one bad match vs. Peng, but still had a solid US Open series.

2. Venus Williams- I'd like to put her as my favorite, being that she is my favorite player....but I have to be logical here. She's been sick with the flu since after Wimbledon. Played decent at the Bank of the West....had chances to win the 1st set against Clijsters in the final. However, being that she's had the flu for a couple weeks now might hurt her performance. But I have to put her as a strong contender because every year she's won Wimbledon....she follows up with a US Open title.

3.Mary Pierce- She's been playing fantastic lately. Dominated the field at the Acura Classic! Injured her thigh though! If she stays healthy and keeps playing at that level she'll outhit everyone.

4. Justine Henin-Hardenne. Good tournament this week. Not her best performance in a final. Can't pick her as a top contender because she crashed out in the 1r at Wimbledon. We'll see.

5. Serena Williams/Maria Sharapova/ Lindsay Davenport (TIE)- Serena has been in horrible form and not in the best of shape either. Keeps one getting injuries one after the other. But you can never count her out because she is a tremendous fighter. Maria has a bad pectoral muscle strain, but still will fight until the end....can't count her out. Davenport....well she had a bit of back trouble had to retire against Gronefeld down 0-5....but we'll see if she'll regain form at the Pilot Pen.

When Davenport goes, Clijsters and Henin Hardenne will dominate again. Seems like a 2 woman Federer like dominance. And for my predictions...

1. Clijsters
2. Henin-Hardenne
3. Venus
4. Kuznetsova maybe?
5. If recovered maybe Davenport

#'s 4 and 5 are wide open.
I have a strange feeling that Serena and Lindsay may not make it to the second week. Serena is more unlikely to make the second week and unless Lindsay plays the entire Pilot pen to the final, uninjured, I don't think she will be healthy enough to play the 2 weeks.

1. Henin-Hardenne
2. Clijsters (Sorry but you just suck on Sundays of slams)
3. Hantuchova (This girl will make a break-through, I can feel it)
4. Myskina (If her ankle gets better, and it should by the Open, I love how tough she's gotten, winning 2 matches with that ankle, that's just nothing but pure gutsy play)
5. Kuznetsova

I hope Samantha Stosur from Australia can have a good run in this. From what I've seen of her, she has potential to upset a few names.

1. Clijsters....girl is on fire, and getting better every match
2. Sharapova....I think her injury and down time are going to haunt her a little
3. Henin-Hardenne.....very solid, but seemly fragile and unfocused at times
4 and 5 are wide open....Pierce, S. Williams, V. Williams possibly, but there are many others who may get up here.

Then again....I am almost always wrong and hope I didn't just jinks Clisters.

1. clijsters cuz she's my girl. this is her year... i hope!
2. Justinne probably, unless davenport is totally healed.
3. reverse above.
4. venus, if she can pay attention to her game and stay focused.
5. russian kuztenseva, sharapova, myskina, etc any of them can play really well on any given day.

i think it will be more fun watching the women than the men this year... lots of good players, lots of pressure, and lots of good chances for upsets.

it's gonna be great.

A real dark horse. Got to overcome that fear of stepping up. Can't seem to get far enough for the necessary confidence boost to kick in. We wish...

Well, based on the summer hardcourt season, Clijsters has to be the favourite. However, as mentioned, she does have a tendency to have a mental breakdown in the finals of a Grand Slam. If she can stay together mentally, then she should win the title. As for Justine Henin-Hardenne, she needs to be in better form than she was against Clijsters in Canada last week. But she's a great fighter, and she will probably pose as Clijsters' biggest threat. This said, if Justine does get her game back to near best form (which you could expect), she would be the favourite.

The rest of the big players have question marks surrounding them. Sharapova has been injured, so she may not be able to capture her best form. She may be vulnerable in the early rounds. Serena looked completely off form and out of shape in Canada - unless she has made a spectacular improvement, I can't see her winning the US Open. Venus Williams has been off tour since Stanford, where she was comprehensively beaten by Kim, but she could be a big threat.

Lindsay Davenport is currently making her return to action in New Haven. Personally, I would love to see Lindsay win, but her mental frailty and the fact that she may not be able to play her best may hinder her. Mauresmo, as we all know, cracks under pressure and I can't see her winning this Slam. As for the rest of the Russians - Kuznetsova has been in terrible form recently. Nobody expected her really to defend her crown before the start of the summer, and now that seems even more unlikely. Dementieva hasn't been in very good form either, and Myskina is always unpredictable and erratic.

Basically, the field is wide open at the US Open in the women's draw, but I think that one of the Belgians will win the tournament. As a fan of Lindsay's, I'd love to see her win it, or see Sharapova prove that she should be no.1 in the world. So my top 5 picks are:

1. Clijsters
2. Justine H-H
3. Lindsay
4. Sharapova
5. Venus
