In Astana Challenger R1 action today Duckhee Lee v Kecmanovic looks like it was "interrupted". Kec won the first set 6-1. Lee eeked out the second set in a tiebreak.

Ruud alsumbering continues, 6-7 4-6.

Kolar had every opportunity to crumble but played aggressively when Ruud had opportunities to break the match open, held his own (8 of 9 BPs saved) and jumped on Ruud's serve in the final game with go for broke returns that gained the win.

Grievous.

They all seem doomed to have these massive sophomore slumps at some point.

Rublev goes at it vs Umag'16 finalist Andrej Martin today in 2R action at Martin's favorite tournament.

At Challenger level, Carlos Taberner (ESP) plays #7 seed Travaglia (ITA) in San Benedetto 2R. WC Michal Dembek (POL) tries for some home cooking vs #8 seed Chest Bump Rosol. In Astana and just about underway is #4 seed Duckhee Lee vs qualifier Myneni (IND). Later in Central Asia's Wimbledon we will see Korea's other rising teen #7 Soon Woo Kim play qualifier Grenier (FRA). Wrapping up Thursday's play will be teenage fratricide between #7 seed Shapovalov and alternate Max Purcell (AUS) in 2R action at Gatineau.

Enjoy!

Shapo makes pretty short work of fellow-teen Purcell, 61 62 in Gatineau. He has a tougher opponent next in the #2 seed, Fabbiano in the QFs.

As mentioned on the Rublev thread, Russian Money pulled out the win in 2 tight sets against Martin. He will face Foggy in the Umag cuartos.

(Gotta say that those Nike US Open Series red/blue outfits are a bit boring.)

ETA:

Oh, and I shouldn't forget to mention Tsitsipas! Stef is playing against De Bakker in Scheveningen QFs tomorrow as well.

As we wind our way to the end of the week, Stefanos is out in The Hague :( (kindly letting local native de Bakker take the victory); Rublev scored a very impressive victory in Umag over defending champ Fognini :D:D:D and is moving on to the SFs; the Koreans (Lee and Kwon) are gone from Astana o_O:(; and, Shapovalov knocked out the #2 seed (Fabbiano) in Gatineau :).

Taberner made the SFs in San Benedetto. Maybe he will also help rebuild the aging Armada.

Thanks for that additional point!
Regarding the Spanish Armada, I'll cast my sails in the direction of Davidovich Fokina, 2 years Taberner's junior, and, of course, young Nico Kukn. But, hat's off to Taberner, taking down Granollers. Perhaps I was too hasty in judgement?

They all mature differently so he might round into a solid player at his own pace. Few watching the scene back in the early 00's gave Ferrer much chance to reach his eventual level.

I've never seen a Taberner match but I will try to catch up on his game. I kinda have to, now knowing he's another 8/8 birthday boy. Just two weeks and change to celebrate his game in this thread.

Ruud is just starting his Q1 match in Hamburg....up against young 16 year old Rudolph Molleker, a pretty solid junior who's been dabbling at Futures tourneys this year. Still needs more seasoning.

Two other German teens also received qualies WCs and play veteran seeds:

Jason Jeremy Hildebrandt (age 17) plays #5 Stakhovsky

Louis Wessels (age 18) plays #6 Leo Mayer.

The Big Kozlovski and a 17-year-old American Trent Bryde are to play today in Atlanta250 qualies.

Koz is spotted 19 years of inexperienced vs his WC opponent Catalin Gard (ROU), who somehow resided on Futures/Challengers long enough to reach #224 in early 2008 without a single match win (0-1) at ATP Tour level. Must be a local pro to have received this WC.

Bryde plays #7 seed Brydan Klein.

I guess Molleker didn't need as much seasoning as I thought! Rudolf took Casper 26 64 64. Plays Leo Mayer next.

ETA: Molleker takes the first set in a tiebreaker.
ETA2: Mayer came back to win the 2nd set 6-3, but Molleker got a break in the third and then held, so he's up 5-2!

All aboard the new hype train. Never hear of him before this week, but those are 2 really nice wins at 16.
Let's see how he does vs Khachanov in the MD
Watch the other German teen WC Altmaier as well. He takes on Zeballos 1R and has a bit more seasoning with already a QF appearance as a LL in this month's ATP250 Antalya Open on grass. He beat VEB and Ilhan in 3rd set TBs to reach that stage and will try to extend the tradition of a German WC teen winning a 1R match at Hamburg made last year by Louis Wessels and in 2014 by The Young Zedi Warrior.

I've seen Altmaier. He's good as well, but there's others his age or younger who I'm more impressed by.

It was a good day for teen tennis.
We had a very young upstart (16yo Molleker) qualify for an ATP500.
We had Rublev shake off the Lucky Loser status to go on to win Umag.
We had an up-and-coming 18yo (Shapovalov) win his second Challenger.

The Big Kozlovski also qualified at Atlanta ATP250. He will play fellow qualifier Halys tonight.

WC Daniel Altmaier is in action at ATP500 Hamburg in a 1R match vs Zeballos.

Aussie teen Max Purcell plays 1R Granby Challenger today vs Moriya.

Michael Mmoh plays Marcus Giron in 1R Binghamton Challenger action.

The rest of the kids get a day off but there will be teenage blood aplenty this week:

Hamburg 1R: RUBLEV vs Kohlschreiber; MOLLEKER vs Khachanov

Atlanta 1R: TIAFOE vs Millman; WC FRITZ vs Eubanks; WC OPELKA vs Jaziri

Granby 1R: WC SIGOUIN vs Ito

The Big Kozlovski gave away the first set in a barrage of DFs 5-7 then held on but lost a tight TB 7-9 to lose his match vs Halys in Atlanta.

Altmaier was outclassed in Hamburg by Zeballos, 6&4.

Rain delays in Granby and Binghamton so it's on to Tuesday for Purcell and Mmoh.

Russian Money vs Kohlschreiber is the featured late afternoon match in Hamburg. Molleker also plays Khachanov on Center Court a bit earlier.

Tiafoe, Fritz and Opelka are all scheduled for 1R action in Atlanta.

Molleker played reasonably well. Maybe his game is ultimately lacking a real weapon but I expect him to reach the top 100 level before he turns 20.
He has time...won't be 17 until late October and already a win in qualies over Leo Mayer, a former top 21 player just two years removed from that ranking. Now that LL Mayer is going toe-to-toe with the current #24 player ARV. Rudolf' level is not far removed from competing well at ATP level.

Teenage bloodbath everywhere...Roobles and Molleker in Hamburg down in straigh sets; Fritz upset by Christopher Eubanks in straight sets in Atlanta, where his two teen compadres Tiafoe and Opelka folded at critical junctures. Tiafoe broke to serve for the match at 6-5 third set vs Millman, was broken back and then lost the decisive TB 5-7. Opelka failed to convert 8 MPs in the second set, four on Jaziri's serve before a long TB that was lost 14-16 and then folded 1-6 in the third.

At Challenger level, Mmoh advanced to 2R in Binghamton.

Rain has backed up action at Granby but Purcell, WC Sigouin and #4 seed Shapovalov are all scheduled for 1R play on Wednesday.

Horrible day for the teens. That's a new low for Fritz losing to Eubanks, Jeez. Seemed like an easy 1st rd for him. Also the chokes by both Opelka and Tiafoe...
Money getting blown out was actually expected IMO, coming right off the title into a tough 1st rd match.

I half expected a Money drop but not for the bottom to fall out of the market. The first set was close but he caved badly after dropping it. That needs to stop.

Here is the Livestream link to the Shapo Matosevic match.
https://livestream.com/accounts/5057055/events/7619293 (I prefer this, when available over the ATP Challenger link since you can rewind, pause, etc. and it's available after the match is over.)

Early goings, but so far an ugly match. I hope they settle down and play some solid tennis.

ETA: Denis takes it 75 63, but it was a fugly match. No rhythm. Few long rallies. Unforced errors by both players....but in the end Denis picked up his game. I'm not used to watching Matosevic, but he just seemed miserable. (not to other people, but his general demeanor) It just sucked the energy out of the match.

Wasn't able to watch the match, sounds like I didn't miss much though. Quite a solid win though regardless, Marinko was a top 40 player not that long ago (I'm assuming he's been injured). Go Chapeau!

Marinko has never been the life of the party. At least he is consistently miserable.

The Hat into Granby Challenger SFs vs last week's final opponent Polansky.

Tsitsipas won his 1R of qualies at ATP250 Kitzbuhel over Safwat.

Four American teens playing ATP500 Washington qualies. They are in rain delay with two trailing, one leading 3-0 first set (Danny Thomas from Alabama) and the fourth defeated.

Teenage players currently in the Top 125 of the men's rankings:

Frances Tiafoe (USA; no. 67) - 19 years, 6 months

Taylor Fritz (USA; no. 125) - 19 years, 9 months

Looking at the men's ATP ranking, there no teenagers in the top 100 currently that I know of. Taylor Fritz is 125!

Lots of teenage action today at ATP level:

At Washington ATP500 level 1R matches are:

RUUD vs Tommy Paul

OPELKA vs Medvedev

KOZLOVSKI vs Bhambri

At Los Cabos ATP250:

#8 seed TIAFOE vs Kokkinakis

At Challenger level:

Kecmanovic has advanced to 2R in Chengdu. Kwon was defeated. Duckhee Lee plays Tuesday, as will the younger Korean Chung (Yunseong).

Scheduled for Tuesday at Segovia are Carlos Taberner and ADM.

At Lexington, Max Purcell faces very veteran Jesse Witten today. #4 seed Mmoh is scheduled for Tuesday.

That is all I see right now.
