the wind made that slopestyle snowboard event a joke..

it was pot luck if the wind was gonna send them tumbling or if a lull gave them a window to get a good jump in.

Ok some of these winter sports are goofy but I have to admit Bi-athlon is pretty cool. Why they give style points on the ski jump has always baffled me. Its like giving style points for the long jump in the summer games. Who cares. Just jump the furthest.

I will never not hate all the snowboarding events that keep getting added. And they aren't even translating into ratings...

Hmm, I have to say while I'm not the biggest fan of winter sports, the women's snowboarding half-pipe event was pretty sensational to watch. That Chloe Kim, who won gold, is awesome! Watching her snowboard is like watching Fed play tennis, it's so beautiful to watch and she makes it look so easy.

Yeah she really was a class above the rest. Even my untrained eyes could tell it would take a miracle for them to catch her. (I'm also very interested to see if Shaun White can return to the podium.)

Another girl who seems to stand alone, and just as fun:

Really getting into these games. Lots of new faces and lots of action. Loving the mixed curling.

I really find annoying how much they are stressing the cold... Maybe I've been in upstate NY too long. But having returned from a ski trip a couple of weeks back where I was outside sub 0*F temps for hours, I'm thinking what's the big deal? It's about tie we had a proper WINTER Olympic games.

There's a difference between just being in the cold, versus performing athletically in the cold. I have to question your ski trips, are you really exerting and pushing your body to the limits like these athletes are?

Or better yet, just try playing tennis in the cold. You'll probably say oh 30-40's isn't that bad, because, upstate NY right? But would you play outdoors in that temperature and gusts of randomly smacking you in the face?

I would and I have skied all day in sub 0 F temps (colder with windchill)... entire day... certainly not crowded those days but have been surrounded by a good amount of people doing the same thing so I'm not the only one. $100+ for lift passes at top resorts these days so the thought process is to take advantage of the thin crowds and get as many runs in.

As far as performing athletically in the cold, look up where these athletes compete in during the FIS tour. There are definitely colder days and worse conditions so they are accustomed to it.

Are you seriously comparing the conditions tennis, a summer, outdoor sport with winter snowsports? Why not pick swimming then? It's the winter olympics, it's supposed to be cold. Would they rather have the ski jumpers land on puddles of melted snow stored from previous years like they did in Sochi?

Alright, go out there and do a jump in that wind, go. Let me know how that goes. I better not hear you complain either about how the wind and the cold is throwing off your tricks and grabs.

I'm waiting to hear back from you. Go. Make sure you have someone film your eat it too. Because obviously, you're better than these athletes.

I always see the woman squatting and merely pushing the puck or whatever it is called, and the guy vigorously running and rubbing the ice in front of the puck like a hyper-charged janitor.

Is this sexist?

What's your point? That I' not an elite athlete? They all compete under the same conditions. Again, not really different than the ones they have to deal with on the tour all the time. Aside from some schedule changes due to the wind and the women's snowboard slopeside (Jamie Anderson was smart to dial it back a bit and ended up winning), I have not seen the weather be an issue and the athletes have not complained. The media harping on how cold it is is pretty darned annoying though.

I see both.... It is interesting in mixed doubles since there are only 2 players, either one has to be quick to get up to broom after throwing, or rely on their partner. Vigorous brooming isn't exactly easy but fitness is rarely an issue in curling.

My point is, if you're going to sit there and complain about some of the stuff they're experiencing, then you had better be above them, put yourself in their shoes and not complain.

Shameful to not venerate the great Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards, the legendary British ski jumper! I still remember fondly his exploits at the Calgary Olympics in 1988.

Eddie was a character and if there had been gold medals for entertainment in Calgary I'm sure he would have topped the podium but unfortunately for him and Team GB there weren't!

On the flip side, one of the greatest pair of ice dancers are Brits Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, who fell .1 point shy from a single judge of scoring the only clean sweep of 6.0's in Olympics history at the 1984 Olympics in Sarajevo.

The great exceptions that merely prove the dreary rule for Team GB's efforts at the Winter Olympics. It's notable that T & D never inspired any British successors. Let's face it, on almost all the evidence so far, the UK and the Winter Games are just not made for each other!

Shaun white is the goat. That 3rd run was as clutch as it gets

I'm not going to lie, I jumped and punched the air more times than I did when Federer won his 20th Grand Slam.

Also, I can't think of an event that isn't thrilling. Speed skating is like the best thing ever.

Kinda off topic but in case you haven't you owe it to yourself to check out the 1964 Grenoble mascot:

https://www.olympic.org/mascots

Almost spat water all over my keyboard. :D Didn't think there had been a more ridiculous-looking Olympic mascot than London's but there you go.

You may want to capitalize that "as" next time because I thought it was a typo.

Also if you live in/are from Finland, how is Kramer (who's Dutch) such a big name in your country? Is skating such a big sport over there? Thanks in advance.

This dude ranked every Olympic mascot. Yea, there are some bad ones.

Yeah, that's gotta be one of the greatest competitions in Olympic history, and obviously Shaun White's masterpiece. I actually watched the whole thing on replay with full knowledge of the results but still found it gripping from start to finish.

I was gonna say the cliche about crafting a perfect script applies here but then came two controversies (one stupid, the other legit) which obviously put a dent in it. About the legit one I'll just add this in defense of White (as has been pointed out by several online commentators): when you're in a rock band you're likely to be subjected to at least some out-of-control behavior amid all the partying, boozing and whatnot and jokes can sometimes go too far. Also it seems that the only time White came even close to physical (as opposed to sexual) assault was in the aftermath of his dispiriting loss at Sochi where, by Lena Zawaideh's own admission, he was acting irrationally and kinda being a d!ck to everyone (if particularly threatening to her). So unless it turns out that White has a pattern of such behavior I'll give him a pass on this one. After his tone-deft dismissal at the presser he recovered in time for the Today interview where he said mostly the right words (at least to the extent his settlement with Zawaideh allows), and hopefully that should be enough to placate the critics who really should be using this occasion to effect widespread change rather than focus on Shaun White.

I was also gonna say we'll be blessed if we see another event at these Games that's half as good, but the final round of pairs skating last night was another corker. The German couple's free skate was clearly the best and frankly left me almost in awe, but I really felt bad for the Chinese. Must feel like absolute crap to let an Olympic gold slip away by a measly 0.43 points.

Also, I can't think of an event that isn't thrilling. Speed skating is like the best thing ever.

For sheer excitement I can't think of many sporting events that can match the final round of Olympic short track, not least because of it crazy unpredictability. I'm guessing the South Koreans will get a big boost from the home crowd and dominate the sport once again... except them crashes don't seem to discriminate based on nationality. ;)

Not surprised Grenoble ranked last. Seriously my reaction upon seeing it for the first time was like "What in the holy fuq is this?"

Disagree on its originality score, though. London's Wenlock was creepy in its own right (apparently nobody knows what kind of creature it is), but Schuss is easily the strangest Olympic mascot ever. I'm already beginning to like it.

Shawn white and the 17 years old chloe Kim they were flying
My reaction was like:

Yes, it's quite spectacular to watch. But not without costs:

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/13/sports/olympics/shaun-white-halfpipe.html

Not sure what or where the happy medium would be here. I'm all for adults making their own decisions, but as with doping there are some kids involved who can't be shielded from paternalism entirely. (Needless to say Chloe among others is still an underage teen.)

What does it even mean to be an Olympian from a specific country any more? Nationality is as fluid as any willingness of the nation to offer a better deal. For all the pomp the Olympics are a business and the IOC is a cartel (but so is FIFA, ATP...).

That all said... I still enjoy watching the competition as I find it entertaining.

ItS been a lot of wind, was a problem in downhill and snowboard. We are vikings, never hear us complaining about cold weather. But the wind been a problem.

For us it means everything. Everything is put on hold during olympics. Sales go significally down. People in front of tv watching our people. Just saw that when they are on more than 90% of tv viewers watches olympics. We are crazy about winter sports. Small country that wins a lot makes it special.

True... but hardly an unusual issue for Alpine events. Happens all the time.

The reschedule didn't stop the Viking attack.
Thats true. They were actually annoyed that in the combined they used a smaller slope because of the wind.
They also conplained the downhill didnt get fast enough :p
But in snowboard it was a problem. A Norwegian women from my hometown was a fav, but the wind had too much impact on her jumps. She cried on tv. She has won x games and such, no coward.

For me too... the Winter Olympics are the best sporting event. Event by event so much better than Summer Olympics in my opinion. Does anybody honestly think the 100m sprint is more exciting than the downhill? This may not be the best measure of testing athletic limits but what % of athletes are risking death in the Summer Olympics vs Winter? Short track may be the most chaotic and exciting self-propelled race of any type.

I embrace the cold weather. In fact... I pray that it stays cold all winter so we don't get the melt freeze cycles messing up our precious snow. Where most folks dread snowstorms, I look forward to them. Winter is soooooo much cooler than Summer. I can play tennis in the winter... but I can't ski in the summer (well... easily, I think they have an indoor ski hill in Jersey somewhere).

yeah... that was a shame. I feel like that the best slopeside snowboarding was not on display. They should have delayed it. it was borderline dangerous. The men's were done and that facility is not used for anything else.

Skiing is our thing. Its so much fun!!

We have snowboard slopes high up in the mountains w snow in summer :D
My first ever job was in the downhill slopes in my town. Nothing comes between us and skiing :D
Wish we can have the olympics again in my lifetime.

I love all skiing sports. But of course downhill maybe most impressive as they only have one chance and just a small mistake can ruin it all. Its nerve wrecking to watch.
I also like cross country. We have a new young guy that just won a gold, youngest skier ever. He developed his own technique, lots of fun to watch him.

Speed skating means a lot for us (my opinion i find it boring especially the long distances) it is the only winter sport we are good in it we dominated this year and 4 years ago it and shorttrack 2nd

When Kramer (he is the goat from the long distances 5 and 10km won everything but a gold medal) failed to win a gold medal again!!!! it his best distance (the 10 km) the Dutch viewers are devastated and pissed atm.

As a Brit, I totally agree. We’re usually top 3 in the summer Olympics and win a couple of dozen golds, but I much prefer the Winter Olympics. The crazier the event, the better :)
