Are you so sure it was such a mistake? They still have other slam winners. It's a business calculation, they decided they wasn't worth what she was asking.

I think I read an article or watched an interview or something that Halep was saying dream comes true with Nike deal...

Young Halep never would have lost that contract. Bouchard probably has the biggest contract.

Romania is a small country but tennis is #1 sport in the nation. Not sure the appeal of Halep worldwide, however. Certainly interesting to see how it plays out!

Definitely a business calculation. Somebody mentioned that they wanted to focus on Muguruza instead. Similar story to when adidas dropped Nole to focus on Andy. Djokovic after that exploded and ended up making history wearing the Uniqlo logo on his chest. What I find interesting is that adidas thought she wasn't worth the money and nike said "thank you, I'll take that".

Djokovic wore Adidas shoes for each and every part of his "explosion".

Just saying.

^^^ Yes, he did wear the 3 stripes on his feet. Unfortunately for adidas, the footwear usually doesn't show up in those pictures where he's holding the trophy.
And I miss to understand why would you go "explosion". After all, Nole is the first male player since '69 to win 4 majors in a row. If that's not outstanding, I don't know what is.

It doesn't matter, if it shows up in the picture with him holding the trophy or not, when the person seeing the picture (supposedly he is a little interested in his apparel) goes to a retailer/shop and sees "Adidas Novak Pro" as his shoe.

Moreover, with sponsor companies unable to deliver a proper shoe, and making copies of the real deal ( like with Murray), It is increasingly obvious that the original company has a competence beyond that of the sponsor, which only elevates its profile in this particular segment (admittedly that is relevant only for the tennis fans).

You can bet that Nike will do everything possible to keep Federer as a shoe customer for that same reason, if indeed he is switching to Uniqlo.

"Explosion" is just too flamboyant.

Nothing against the feat itself or its significance, which is indeed considerable.

Don't forget Sergio Tacchini! Unfortunately for them they couldn't afford to keep him as the contract had a ton of incentive laden payments that he outperformed greatly in 2011 if I remember correctly

^^^ Yes, that's what I heard, too. Also, ST didn't have enough product ready for the sudden demand. I guess nobody really expected Nole to become what he has become.

If someone needs to get fired maybe it was at Puma then Nike,

Wow she was in phenomenal physical condition. Its always bothered me when people call her fat or other unfavorable words towards her physicality. Though to be fair she has showed up in a few tournaments here and again out of peak shape. I actually watched her in the '04 US Open in the early rounds. The boots she wore in the warm up with the jean skirt truly confused me.

With those calves wondered how she strapped them on for show or play.
