Murray To Retire At Wimbledon

How is it that Corey Seager, for those baseball fans out there, is expected to be able to come back in less than a year? Different type of hip surgery?
Probably less severe issue (Lleyton Hewitt also came back from hip surgery). Also baseball is a less physical sport.

One year, two of the games greatest fighters who managed to squeeze out every drop of potential in themselves are sadly leaving. I hope Andy doesn’t have to live the rest of his life with this hip pain. I can’t even begin to fathom how bad it must be in order to force him out of a sport which he loves so much. We will miss you Andy.

This sucks. Watching him play in Brisbane and basically be forced to slice backhands inside the singles alley of the court instead of hitting open stance backhands or ripping closed stance CC backhands was brutal.

Technically speaking his backhand wasn't always the cleanest compared to Novak's or Nishikori's. I believe firmly that's where his hip problems are killing him the most.

This is sad for tennis. An understatement.

I expected this since 18months ago, but it's still surreal to actually be here bc the Big4 has been such a permanent fixture for soooo long. But I'm happy for MuryGOAT that he chose this. Ever since I saw the clip he posted between WB17 and USO17 (about 18months ago, and before his surgery last year), I felt that it might be prudent for him to consider retiring just to ensure the least amount of pains for the rest of his life. Andy's game is very very effective (there's a reason why he gave the OldMan fits early on), but it's also very physical. To continue playing after hip issues started to pop up is risking too much IMO.

Happy retirement MuryGOAT.
You'll surely be missed.

P.S. Surely, your dry-humor will live on in your commentaries and social media?

Err what if this pain is just a phase and it becomes much more manageable just by playing through it for a few months. Is such a thing possible or am I blowing hefty fart clouds?

His hip is gone. When you start having hip pain, the end is inevitable. He prolonged longer than I thought he would.

Never my fave player but I will say I’ll miss him. I hope he can enjoy his retirement without pain in the future.

I hope he does commentary man. He's got to stick around. Sport wouldn't be the same without him.

CALL ME GENIUS MASTER SIR.
I told you Andy won't be able to continue with that type of hip surgery. No athelete can come back from such hip surgery and get back to 100 %, especially in Tennis. Even Golf, it is extremely difficult so what do you think would happen in tennis. I called this one because I know and I am genius. You are Welcome.

Really sad news,I know he gets a lot of criticism from sports fans but I always liked him as a player and person. I expect RBA to win the match, but hopefully Andy can put up a good fight and make it through to Wimbledon...

Take a look at the age of the top 100 or 200 for the last few years. Many players other than the big three are going on to 35 or older. Ivo Karlovic is #69 a few weeks shy of his 40th.

Honestly it's because of the money involved. The average age was 29-31 for forever. Now depending on how you play it, you can make easy money as a recognizable face so players are sticking it out way past their expiry date.

What a bummer. It must be very hard not to leave on your terms. I hope Andy realized what he has achieved, on his terms. He's his country greatest tennis player in the Open Era. Wimbledon Champion, Olympic Champion, Davis Champion. An outspoken advocate for women.

Sir Andrew Murray will be missed.

Fantastic career for a great champion. So cool to see him finally get his World No. 1. His level in 2016 is really underappreciated.

Super sad. Definately going to miss him.

Sad news, but I suppose it was going to happen soon. It’s easy to forget that not too long ago, most players were physically done at Andy’s age.

I hope he sticks around in the sport as a commentator or coach.

Enjoy your retirement, you Scottish GOAT.

yup most players don't even get to 1 slam, he has 3, including 2 wimbledons, multiple masters, 2 olympic golds, a great career no matter how you look at it.

Definitely sad to see him retire so prematurely but he has a lot to be proud about. Winning Wimbledon twice as a Britain and reaching Roland Garros final are amazing accomplishments. Maybe only regret is that he never won an Australian Open.

Its very sad but he had a great career during the Golden Age of Tennis.

I don't think hip pain is something like in phases, that's a very important muscle in playing this sport.

Tennis is just on another level physically. The only sports that's more demanding is arguably Rugby. From the stand-point that your body needs to be in top shape. Obviously if you're Karlovic you can live off tiebreaks but thatès not Andy's game.
the amount of changing directions that tennis requires makes just about any serious lower body injury/surgery a death sentence.

It is an early retirement. Maybe he'll come back in a year or 18 months after surgery. He could still have a long time ahead of him if he did.
Actually, having listened to the presser, he sounds open to that. He just realizes how unlikely it is to return to sports following the next surgery he is considering. But if he can, sounds like he will.

Although very sad to see him go, he has achieved the impossible and he had reached the pinnacle of the sport. and he will be remembered as best Tennis player England has ever seen and they will erect Monument and Statues of him. So he should have no regrets...

Besides now he can explore that professional Gaming world and if he is really as good as he saids he is, he will actually make more money in that than at tennis.

Never thought Murray would retire at the same time as Ferrer who is 5 years older.

It's like Murray had to choose between the no.1 ranking and his career. I think it's up to the rest of us to decide whether that choice was worth it.

Sure sounds more like he isnt even going to make Wimbledon but if he could that would be the last event
