Who is the Greatest And Girthiest Player Ever?

Of course many people are going to say Serena Williams immediately, but is she the greatest AND girthiest player ever? For years she was very trim.

Not to ignore the elephant in the room (no pun intended) but I saw Taylor Townsend's US Open match today and broadcasters always mention her excellent career as a junior and then try to act as though they cannot understand why her pro career hasn't gone as well (ignoring the most obvious reason) though God knows she has abundant talent.
I find it kind of insulting to my intelligence, actually.

Martina Navratilova and Lindsay Davenport both had to hit the gym and do push aways in order to reach their fullest potential and Chris Evert was forced to pack on some muscle and slim down a bit to stay competitive.
And I am not just picking on poor put upon women. Henri Leconte, Marcus Bagdatis and Leander Paes (three male players that immediately come to mind) were all seen as less than outstanding specimens in their time.
There was a top player in the post WWII era, Jaroslav Drobny, who I never saw of course but who was always described as kind of chunky.

So though the subject is indelicate is Taylor Townsend being done any favors when no one brings up her beefy frame in public?

That's not actually Trump. It was a mock photoshoot with a very good lookalike. The spray tanning shots are even better.

Irakli Labadze is my favourite fat player.

Well, interesting question. So I will show my age by starting out with a diminutive female Pro who hit the ball harder than any of her opponents. She was called Little Mo, after the battleship Missouri, Maureen Connolly.

Then next up is Jimmy Connors. A blistering machine that just overwhelmed his opponents. After Connors, I would have to go with Ivan Lendl. He just continued to hit harder and harder as the match worn on. Lendl an animal.

It is hard for me to leave out Richard (Pancho) Gonzales. Every one of his opponents said don't make him mad, he will destroy you. You might stand a chance of winning if you didn't make Gonzales mad.

Okay, I missed some names and thanks for reminding me. Bartoli, Nalbandian and Dent (built more like a running back), principally. I should also say some players started out scrawny and thin and sometimes ended up a bit chunky (Monica Seles).
And I'm reminded that "fat" is a relative term when it comes to pro tennis.

As far as Taylor Townsend I love that she has brought serve and volley back into the limelight (at least for now). But I still think the media could stop ignoring
the elephant in the room (again, no pun intended) when it comes to Townsend. She is so ultra talented and determined.
How much better would she be if lost another thirty pounds or so? I know she knows and I know she has heard it all before.

You must be new to tennis if you don't remember the USTA denying her a wildcard she earned because she was overweight and putting her on twice a day conditioning and basically not treating her like a human being.

Always good to start a thread on something you know nothing about.

Nobody cries foul when an NFL lineman is fined and forced to lose weight when they show up to training camp overweight.

Wait, what?

Aren’t we talking about overweight professional athletes being required to lose weight to compete?

Or are you saying this never happens to pro football players

I know Taylor wasn’t required to lose weight per se, but it’s similar

Pro teams are motivated to win, if you help the team win you play.

The USTA is not motivated by winning.

No, as a matter of fact I don't remember any of that and I've been playing avidly since the early '80s. Maybe you could link to a news story that details how the USTA treated Townsend like a non human.
By the way my thread is about much more than just Townsend. She is only the starting point, speaking of things one knows nothing about.

Thanks for the link. Most people wouldn't have the guts to post a link that contradicts themselves, i.e. that one must have been living under a rock not to know about
Townsend's issues with the USTA. I'm not surprised ESPN kept most people in the dark, including myself, on the matter.

Btw again, copping a hostile attitude when dealing with others isn't the best way to go about things.

Why not?

You see some bozo talking out his ass you give him a shove and see what he is made of.

You aren't breaking any ground here.

Search for Coco Overweight and the USTA womens' eating team.

Okay. You're a troll working out your hostility issues even after you posted something that made my point for me.
I understand.
