Why Serena is the greatest female player ever

These are the reasons Serena Williams is the greatest female player ever.

-If she were born at the same time as any of Navratilova, Graf, Evert, or Court she would lead any of them in head to head.

-If she were born at the same time as any of Navratilova, Graf, Evert, or Court she would win more slams than any of them.

-At her peak in 2002-2003 none of Navratilova, Graf, Evert, or Court would stand a chance against her anywhere but clay.

-She is the only one who has never once lost a match playing her best. Navratilova, Graf, Evert, and Court have all lost matches playing their best. Serena never has.

-Serena has almost never lost a match she even played well in. The only one who has ever beaten her playing well is Venus maybe. Navratilova, Graf, Evert, and Court have lost to a ton of matches even when playing well.

-The only reason Serena will not end up with more slams than those 4 is her competition is so much tougher. If you put one of these in Serena's place with the incredible competition Serena has had in her career none of them win even as much as Serena has.

For the record, I do not share this man's opinions.

Tell me what I said that was wrong. Have you ever seen Navratilova or Graf play. They were good but Serena at her best would crush them at their best. Way too much power and athletic ability and raw talent for both. Serena overpowered Graf and hit her off the court in the Indian Wells final in 1999 and Serena was only 17 years old. If baby in diapers Serena did that to prime Graf imagine what grown up Serena would do to her. Evert would be a much bigger joke though, imagine her moonballs going up against Serena, LOL! Evert played like a poor womens Hingis, even Hingis would thrash her so imagine Serena. Court won almost half her slams in Australia vs mostly a bunch of clowns since the other top girls skipped it every year.

This is the same troll who thinks Serena is better than Henin on clay. This guy is a total jackass. I don't know a nicer way to put it.

Please everyone, heed this advice:

Baby 17 year old Serena half the player adult Serena was, overpowering and beating a prime Graf. A young Graf similarily overtook Martina when Martina was still near her best so imagine what Serena would do to her. Dont even get me started on Evert and Court.

This is the same Serena who managed to lose to the likes of Sybille Bammer and Samantha Stosur recently, even managed to lose to Jill Craybas at Wimbledon. All I can say is, matches aren't played on paper. To think greats like Navratilova, Evert, and Graf would stand zero chance vs Serena is pure lunacy. Serena is far from invincible.

Serena played bad in her losses to those players. When she lost to Jill Craybas she was like 300 pounds, it was disgusting. That wasnt the real Serena. There is no doubt Serena is not as consistent as Navratilova, Graf, and Evert in their primes. I will concede that. She has more bad matches or even bad years. However her best is better than all 3 of those at their best. If she was in her primes together with them whenever Serena plays well Serena would win. The matches would be on her racquet. Those others all have lost to others playing well many times, sometimes even playing their best, Serena never has.

Evert especialy is a joke by comparision. I mean I could see you arguing Navratilova or Graf but Evert!?!? Have you seen her play. She plays like a poor womens Hingis. All she does is push and block balls back and she hits so many moonballs. Even Safina would kill her the way she played. I cant believe such a pushing moonballer ever won 18 slams. The competition back then must have really sucked. That would be like Wozniacki winning 18 slams today.

Oh, please tell us what you think about Evert and Court. We can't wait.

By the way, Graf was in her prime in 1996. She injured her left knee at the end of 1996. She had surgery on it in 1997. She reinjured it when she came back and had to have surgery again at the end of 1997. She was still coming back from the last surgery in 1999 when she played Serena at the the 1999 IW.

But, I can see why you would have missed all that. When Serena came back from her knee operation, she was fat and ungainly. That never happened to Steffi Graf because she was, even after the major surgery to her knee, a superior physical specimen. Not in her tennis prime anymore, but still a superior physical specimen.

Graf was in her prime in 1999. She won the French Open and reached the Wimbledon final. She wouldnt be having results like that if she were "past her prime" so drop that silly sob excuse. Graf was in her prime and a baby Serena who was half the player she would later become overpowered and beat her.

Evert and Court are clowns, two of the most overrated players ever. Court won half of her slams in the joke Australian Open where the real big guns like King and Bueno didnt even play. Evert is a pushing moonballer, if she played today she would be like Caroline Wozniacki. Once Navratilova got in shape and later Graf emerged they were killing her, beating her 6-2, 6-1 and scores like that since blocking every ball back simply didnt work anymore.

Serena is awesome, but this is laughable. 1999 is not prime Graf...yet she still beat Serena in 1999.

When Serena stops having losing records against players like Sybille Bammer (including losing 0 and 3 in their last meeting), then this discussion won't be as ridiculous. No other great player has ever taken as many matches off as Serena has...its embarrassing and has contributed to the lowering of quality of the women's game. For that reason alone, she shouldn't even be in the same category as Court, Graf, Evert, or Navratilova unless she wins AT LEAST 7 more slams -- and even then, its at best barely debatable.

The Serena level of 2002-03 (before she was foolish enough to injure her knee while trying to dance) could have made this an interesting thread if she had maintained that level for the next 5-6 years. However, she couldn't so its a moot point. Serena is clearly top-10 of all time, but is light years behind those in the top-5 in terms of career achievements.

I highly doubt she can become the greatest female player ever at this point, but Serena might be the most talented female player of all time. For that reason alone how great a player she is, one of the greatest in history, might end up being overshadowed by how much greater she still could have been had she fully applied herself. I hope that isnt the case, as how great a career she had and how high she still ranks in history should be given priority over what could have been, but I suspect the latter will get alot of focus. While more of it was in her own hands than say Seles or Mo Connolly what if cases Serena did have her own bad luck with a chronic knee problem that took years to resolve, as well as family tragedy. The latter is very significant, it might be well that Seles own family tragedy was a bigger downfall to her post stabbing career than even the stabbing itself though only she really would have an idea on that.

Sorry, but hitting every shot 200 mph and not showing any variety is not talent in my opinion. The only thing Serena has is intimidation...I would be terrified to see a man that big on the other side of the net too if I was one of the tiny girls on the WTA tour.

Serena in addition to amazing power has:

-tremendous overall athletic ability
-outstanding and efficient overall court movement (especialy when fit)
-flawless service action with terrific disguise, virtually perfect placements, control. The best overall serve in womens tennis history probably.
-ability to hit tremendous angles.
-pretty good feel on the volley, and good hands and reflexes up at the net.
-is an underratedly smart player who instinctively knows how to construct points very well
-tremendous mental toughness and fighting heart which doesnt come hand in hand with power (eg- Safina)

If power was all that mattered Lucic, Sprem, and Vaidisova would probably be your current top 5 along with the Williams sisters yet those 3 have regressed after some early promise to clowns who cant even survive on the main WTA tour as even mere top 100 caliber performance is too much for them to keep up.

two words::: Henin, Clijsters

Clijsters had better win more than her current 2 slams if she wants to be talked about more than a passing note when she retires. As it stands now she will be talked about in discussion with people like Mauresmo and Pierce, her fellow 2 slam winners.

Henin had also better make a strong comeback and win multiple more slams (which I think she will) in order to not damage her reputation further after already quitting in her prime.

Let's review...

*Outstanding and efficient overall court movement? Serena has horrendous footwork. Because of it, she's not often balanced at the point of contact. This has always been true. It's more a liability now because she's lost some speed.

*Flawless Service Motion: Her motion is effective, but it not the most biomechanically-efficient motion.

*Ability to hit tremendous angles: Once in a while and only with premeditation by rolling the ball. Her typical patten is crosscourt/dtl. When Serena is being more aggressive, it's dtl/dtl. In executing these patterns, she operates with a greater margin of error than players like Graf and Seles. Because of that, even with her dtl shots, it can appear as if Serena is just hitting down the middle of the court.

Off her backhand, she cannot naturally play with the same low margin of error and angles as Seles. Off her forehand, she cannot widen the court like Graf could with her inside-out/inside-in forehand. Serena cannot play like Graf period because she lacks the quickness and footwork to run around her backhand and she lacks the talent on the forehand to change the swing profile on pure instinct with forearm rotation/pronation.

On the subject of angles, Serena also lacks a slice backhand with which to exploit the shorter extremes of the court.

*Pretty good feel on the volley: I've seen Serena miss too many volleys where the ball just dies on the face of her racquet to think she has a good volley.

*Constructs points very well: Serena takes advantage of her opponents' weaknesses and sets up points accordingly. She does not have set plays to win points because she lacks one shot that she can hit consistently for a winner. Her only such shot is her serve, but that doesn't help her much if her opponent returns the ball. If you can stay with her in a rally with good pace, like Clijsters did at the US Open, Serena doesn't have one shot she can unfurl from any position to win a point outright.

*Tremendous mental toughness: It is hard to tell how much mental toughness she has and how much of what looks like mental toughness is the effect of having such mentally-weak competition. When you are able to beat Sharapova at the AO by taking advantage of the fact that Sharapova can't adjust strategically to a fast serve hit at her body or outwide, I wouldn't call that mental toughness. I'd call that winning at the expense of your opponent's mental weakness.

*As for Serena's power: She's big, has wide shoulders, and swings a wide-beamed racquet with an oversized head. What is so amazing about that! There is nothing efficiently dynamic about either her forehand and backhand swing. There are more effective ways to create the kind of power Serena does. Look at Federer. His chest and shoulders are hardly as big as Serena's, yet he hits the ball harder. Efficient dynamics.

I would definitively put my money on Steffi. My guess is that she would have driven Serena crazy with her tactical game. Besides, she was very strong mentally. Btw, I would put my money on Monica Seles too.

Prime Steffi I think beats prime Serena 6 out of 10 -- but prime Steffi lasted 7 years, while prime Serena lasted only one.

I'd put prime Serena over Seles -- she hits hard enough on the BH side to expose Seles' lack of movement and reach with the 2H off of both sides.

-If...

Always good to start your argument off about someone being the greatest of all time with the word "If"

Kinda loses it's credibility right from the get go and just gets worse from there. Just saying.

I agree entirely. I actually think Serena is one of the smartest players on tour of the last 10 years. I remeber in her U.S Open final win over Hingis she not only overpowered her but she was matching her wit and cleverness on court, even outHingis-ing Hingis quite a few times, and Hingis is considered one of the most amazing tactical players ever.

Seles is the greatest female player ever.

I dont know if you are joking or not but that is even dumber than saying Serena is. The greatest female player ever who only made it past the quarters once at Wimbledon, and the one time she did somehow eked into the final by outlasting a 35 year old women before being destroyed 6-2, 6-1. The greatest female player ever who couldnt be bothered to get in half decent shape the final almost 8 years of her career and thus allowed herself to be schooled continously by the new wave power hitters like Venus, Serena, Davenport who all exposed her lack of mobility as she lugged all those pounds around. The greatest female player ever with only 9 slams and lopsided losing head to heads with Graf, Venus, Serena, Davenport, Hingis, and many others.

Serena won that 1999 Indian Wells match 6-3 3-6 7-5. That is not exactly hitting somebody off the court.

In fact, Serena is 1-1 vs. Graf having lost in 1999 in Sydney to her 6-2 3-6 7-5, which would make Steffi at least 1 game better than Serena.

I know that when I argue with idiots they try to bring me down to their level and beat me with experience but hey it's worth a shot.
