Team concept tennis is a wonderful idea. But teams can be better thought out. Europe vs World isn’t an ideal concept.
It is always difficult to put fair and competitive teams together, even in actual team sports.

I mean, every method is problematic:

European football: Unfair because money (often from sponsors or investors who are at a certain place very much coincidentally) gets the best players, and best players generate more money etc. etc.
US sports: Draft system seems strange and random, no real chance to identify with a team.
Even the football (soccer) teams in the breaks at school were mostly unfair.

It gets even more complicated in a single’s sport like tennis where a team competition as such looks weird and artificial.

Maybe I would draw by ranking groups, just like how the 2 groups in WTF are chosen, but this time they build a team together.

The Laver Cup team designations are so superficial and contrived . "Team World" vs "Team Europe".
Who the hell came up with this lame Laver Cup idea? Fed?
Why is Rafa showing up for this exhibition instead of resting and preparing for #20?

World: Isner, Raonic, Kyrgios, Shapovalov, Sock, Fritz
Europe: Nadal, Federer, Thiem, Zverev, Tsitsipas, Fognini
Tennis Warehouse: Greatgatsby, BTURNER, Bartelby, Don Lobb,

Seriously I don't think my team would do much worse. I know the 4 of us would love to have our butts handed to us on international television. Can't speak for the others but as long as Federer covers my travel and lodging expenses I will not need any other compensation.
With this lineup, they have to add basketball to make it even remotely interesting.

While Bjorn Borg had already stalled his team without any problems whatsoever, the captain of the Team World, John McEnroe completed his team after a lot of difficulties. It has been revealed that John McEnroe had contacted Felix-Auger Aliassime and Kei Nishikori to play the Laver Cup 2019 and were the initial choices for the Team World but both of them rejected.

Yeh I agree that it should just be a random team event. probably with Fed and Nadal on opposing sides, as theyre the top 2 players playing.
Then its just a draft pick etc.
Europe are just too strong.

No Medvedev? But Sock and Fritz are there? I liked the first two editions, but this 3rd one looks stupid.

Russia is in Europe.

Even so large swathes of the country are geographically in Asia, almost all of the major population centres are west of the Ural mountains.

Well that makes sense, because without those 2 players team world is now pretty much as strong as you can get it....
I’d have loved schwartzman there though instead of e.g. fritz

Well, for one this is supposed to be a Ryder cup equivalent for tennis, and people are simply more into world vs Europe than random team vs random team.

Second, in these team events there often are surprising results. How often don’t we see surprises with the Davis cup (think James ward) where the lower-ranked player pulls off the upset.

Edit: this is of course assuming results are not predetermined to some extent, which could very well be the case.

Either way it seems a pretty fun event, people here take it way too seriously, as if players like nadal don’t know what they can or cannot do with their bodies...

The format of the tournament is such that it won't be decided until the 3rd day and one win on 3rd day equals 3 wins on day 1 lol. So you only need to rig one match on day 3 to make it competitive.

It was a pathetic decision right from the beginning, now after that epic final it looks even worse. Maybe he has some quid pro quo with Federer and Federer will help him out in some other ways IDK, he certainly doesn't need the money. I just hope that he only plays doubles.
LOL i don't think Rafa will still be tired from the US Open Final.
No harm in playing Laver Cup, unless he's injured, and he'll withdraw if he's injured anyway :)

Laver Cup matches count toward h2h.
Good chance for Rafa to increase his lead over Kyrgios :)

Laver Cup is a tennis copy of the Ryder Cup (golf). They also have Team World and Team Europe in the Ryder Cup.

Europe vs the World would be a great concept if they didn't try to pander to Americans. Where is Asia and South America on the World roster? Nishikori, Del Potro, Schwartzman, Anderson, De Minaur, Felix could probably beat this World team.

It becomes a great competitive event when the best guys show up. Give them ATP points. Or schedule it away from any significant ATP events.

This has to be the worse most pathetic event in world sport.

Ill never forget the over scripted over exuberant Federer and Nadal celebrations in 2017 in an inaugral event where there is no history and no rivalry.

Utter joke and waste of time. Hope Nadal withdraws.

LC has really gone wrong this year. I think it had potential, but the way it is set up is so lopsided that it's become a parody of what was already almost a parody. Djokovic's absence does not help, and by now everyone would like to see Medvedev who would surely help the other team. Did they not invite him?
What potential? Far better to revamp the Davis Cup.

Lol....the line up is so lopsided! Is that the best 'The World' has to offer? Team Europe gonna steamroll this one. Poor Captain Mac.

Do not forget the power of the script.
It can make a play worth seeing despite the fact that the actors are not the most suitable for this type of performance.

Good point! Maybe also add women so that brings more competitive teams.

They won't steamroll since this is all scripted. It will be close and come down to the wire as it always does. This is nothing more than an exo. It's ridiculous results now will be official in H2H and in W-L ratios for the year.

Well considering most people where im from, couldn't care less about golf, then the Ryder cup mention is meaningless to me.
