It is also not that bad a thing to stop when playing well. Sampras finished his career in style, something I appreciate, and thinks him make him quite cool. Also if Nadal would wait to retire until he lost 3 or 4 matches in RG more, it would kind of hurt that record a lot, and make 98% to something maybe 94% would make difference on keeping the record closed. Apart from that, I'm quite sure Federer won't retire before at least 2021.

Going out on top is a preference that Fedr doesn't share, and he's stated this in the past. His continuing to play will hinge on health, family, and playing level. His love for the game is without question, so that's not an issue. He has also stated that he doesn't mind having more losses while continuing to play at an older age.
The guy just loves playing tennis.

Yup. This is just Fedr doing what Fedr said. He's recently said that he only plans about 6-months ahead now. At his age, it's not realistic to plan too far ahead bc he has a lot on his plate with family, health, etc.
That was how I understood it anyway (or how I hoped Federer meant it).
It seems like Federer just wants to make sure to have long enough breaks and says that Wimbledon still is the important factor around which he builds his season, even in an Olympic year.

Right. It's especially important next year since the Olympics is squeezed in between 2 slams. That's a tough turnaround to fly almost halfway around the world 2x between two Bo5 tournaments.

I'd be genuinely surprised if he retired next year. Despite some regrets, Fed's been doing fine lately... especially so for his age!

But would that be breaking the record though if the said player is still active? I feel the race between the 3, given that they are all active players, is to see who ends up winning the most. Unless one is retired I just don't see it as a 'record' yet.

I think he should have retired after AO2018 sort of going off with a bang! I think when Nadal got to 17 or 18 he would have known the writing is on the wall, as Nadal will match based on just winning FOs.

Nonsense. He won't retire (and Mirka won't let him) when he is still Top 3/ Top 5 in the world and capable of vulturing slams. As futile as it may look, Team Fed will go down swinging to protect his record. Even if they accept Nadal will get it and keep it, they need to do everything possible to stop Djokovic from overtaking him as well. Fed and Mirka don't want to spend the next 50 years of retirement talking about Fed as the third best player of his era. Maybe they can live with second best.
