Why does everybody love Del Potro?

In all my years playing and watching tennis I am yet to come across a person who openly dislikes or criticises Delpo no matter whose camp they fall in. Is this just because of his ability to keep coming back from injuries or his attitude in general?

At one point in time, Nalbandian certainly didn't like him. There is one high profile example.

Del Potro has a lot going for him in the likeability stakes, though.

I have seen an insane number of comments on TTW and the YT comments section saying "I am a *insert favourite player here* fan, but I always support Delpo in his matches".

Nadal and Djokovic fans are grateful to him for stopping Federer from adding to his slam count by beating him twice at the USO.

Federer and Nadal fans are very happy that he stopped Djokovic twice from going for Olympic Gold.

Federer and Djokovic fans thought he was their guardian angel when he beat Rafa 3 times in a row, the first being in Miami in 2009. They thought he was Rafa's nemesis especially when he went on to beat Rafa in the 2009 USO SF.

Rafa barely even celebrated after beating him in five sets in that monster quarterfinal at Wimbledon 2018 and Novak made sure the world knew how much he respected Delpo in the post-final presentation ceremony at the 2018 US Open. Got to remember that he is one of the few to win a Grand Slam in the era of the Big Three and that too in five sets against Fed.

It's a taboo on TTW to criticise Del Potro or Stanislas "Stan" Wawrinka.

I'm breaking the taboo.

Del Possum is one of the few pros I've seen/heard berate the ball persons. It really turned me off. And I've never liked his game. He mops around the court and his much ballyhooed forehand, while effective, is not a good looking shot. Add in the well worn possum routine and it doesn't add up to love.

You can't criticize Stan The Man but you can criticize his doppelgänger Tankwrinka especially if you're a fan that has paid to see STM play or a tournament director that has paid him appearance money.

If I remember correctly, it's been a long time though, it became such a big deal in Argentina that Nalbandian even held a press conference after the tie to address the press reports!

In an interview with Vogue, Fed was asked who he wanted to have a rematch with if he could and he said it was the 2009 US Open final against Del Potro.
I bet. Fedr knows that a re-match of a loss against Nadal or Djokovic will end with the same result. Maybe not 9-7. :-D

He's overrated. Like Murray.

Sam the ma'm (Sorry bro , couldn't help myself), Delpo was an excellent prospect , most definitely a multi slam winner whose career was swallowed a by injuries.

He is decent and nice, what's not to love?

he's a genuine guy, does not react on winning every point or crave for attention.........and also like @clayqueen said, he was instrumental in helping rafa, fed, djoko and murrey with some big titles all at different times by taking out competition for each of them in different events........so all four fanbases are happy with him........unlike certain fed's pigeons who used to bendover only to fraud and beat baby rafa in mid 00s........biggest example is no way would murrey have won olympic gold in 2012 and wimbledon 2013 without del potro's help.........people also have a soft corner for him because of all his injuries, he was potentially a 6-7 slam winner, ATG material.........we were clearly robbed of big-six (big-3, murray, stan, del po) by tennis gods........

Andy Murray angry with Juan Martin Del Potro

By Mark Hodgkinson

Mamma mia, an opponent caused offence at the Foro Italico by bringing Andy Murray’s mother into their changeover trash-talking. Murray said he never sets out to be antagonistic, and is not overly concerned if opponents make personal remarks about him. He will, however, react if he believes that they are insulting his mother Judy.

Murray saw metaphorical red on the red courts of the Rome Masters after Argentina’s Juan Martin Del Potro made a jibe about Judy during their lively opening-round match late on Monday night, a contest that the Briton won after the gangly 19-year-old qualifier retired in the final set because of back pain.

The soundtrack on television recordings indicated that the flare-up began during a change of ends in the second set, after Murray raised the issue of why Del Potro had not said sorry after drilling a ball towards his head. Murray has known Del Potro since their junior days, and they have since chatted on the internet, and so he expected an apology. But Del Potro responded by snapping that Murray and his mother had not changed, and were “always the same”.

The young men raged on their chairs - tennis does seated arguments better than any other sport - with Murray insisting that Del Potro’s comment about his mother had been “unacceptable”. Umpire Fergus Murphy, sitting in his high-chair between the warring pair, asked Murray to calm down. Murphy and Murray had earlier had an exchange of views, after the 20-year-old complained about a warning for swearing by vehemently denying that he had used the f-word.

Totally unbiased framing there

stopped Federer

stopped Djokovic

fans only thought he was stopping Nadal

Hmm..... Surprising that Murray could understand Delpo's jibe considering it would most probably have been in Spanish. Del Potro could barely speak a word of English back in 2008.

Off course, he lost only one final against non Djokodal, and it was that one...

Federer is not crazy to choose to play against opponents to whom he mostly loses in finals... Opportuniterer...

oh Alice, so applying your logic, it means that in all those GS where Fed played a non-Djokodal player in the final, Djokovic decided to tank before potential match with Fed?
that's something new.

Murray understands a good deal of Spanish from his time training with Rafa in Barcelona but, in any case, Delpo definitely said it in English.

Incidentally, that wasn't the only time 'The Gentle Giant' uttered an insult toward's someone's mother:

Del Potro is ok. I mean, I don’t have him in my top 5, but he plays pretty good when he’s on top of his game.
