Former Women's World No. 1 Chris Evert has called out current Men's World No. 1 Novak Djokovic on a statement he made after his French Open final loss to Rafael Nadal. Women in sport have long been fighting for visibility and equal respect from audiences and broadcasters, and this is just one such example of how men's sport is considered the default while women's sport is mentioned as an afterthought.

The greatest rivalry in tennis?
In the trophy presentation ceremony at French Open 2020, this year's runner-up Novak Djokovic made a statement that while innocent, showed the mindset of male players when it comes to recounting sporting records and legends. In his acceptance speech, Djokovic mentioned that he and Rafa had the greatest rivalry in tennis history and had played each other the maximum number of times in the history of the game.

While Novak Djokovic was technically correct, he missed out on an important detail. His rivalry with Rafa is the greatest in the men's game. The actual greatest rivalry in tennis was between Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert and the latter was quick to point this out. Navratilova also joined in on the conversation to school the many people who claimed that her rivalry with Evert mattered less, or that Novak Djokovic's non-mention of the word "men" was acceptable. The tweet was also mentioned by 12-time Grand Slam champion Billie Jean King.

I can't see the point Chris Evert is making. Everyone knows Djokovic was talking about men's tennis. There isn't a combined body for tennis the WTA & ATP are completely separate.

leave aside you Nadal devotee lenses for a second, then you will see that technically she is correct, 80 matches is a bigger H2H then what Djokodal have.
nothing wrong in correcting Novak here.

Everyone knows Djokovic was referring to men's tennis. it was at the trophy ceremony for a men's tournament so why would he be thinking of Evert and Navratilova? When they say Serena is GOAT or aspiring to be everyone knows they are talking about women's tennis.

I get where she's coming from, of course if you had 80 battles you'd want that respect, totally get it. It's just not a good look to make it a thing and say it on twitter. Djokovic was obviously talking about mens tennis which is "his" sport, he doesn't play for the WTA.

even moreso when she re-twits the ATP account, it shall be understood by default that they talk about men tennis.
I assume that she wants same treatment: women tennis, men tennis, WNBA, MNBA, etc.

We know you Nadal fans don't get even the simplest of concepts because of your mental impairments , but if you read again, you will see he did say "the sport" , not the "ATP".

Again, I said she's absolutely right. I just disagree with her needing to tweet about it, she should know her worth. Obviously, Navrátilová was the last thing on his mind when he was talking about Nadal. Everything is way too PC these days lol. If you could sell offense, people would line up for hours to be offended.

Does anybody with an ounce of common sense take these virtue-signaling American Establishment bots seriously anymore?

Martina, Evert, Mac, Bully Jean King - all cringeworthy, deeply frustrated clowns who can't get over the fact their careers are over.

Lendl and Babs: they never do this. Because they are happy with their own lives.

let me try and chew it down for you.
"Our head-to-head is the biggest head-to-head ever in the history of the sport"

If sport is defined as sport where one opponent plays with a tennis racket on one side of the court, and another opponent plays on another side of the court, and they have same rules for equipment, and when the point starts and when the point ends, well, technically women play the same sport as men do.
So, she has the moral right to point out that there used to be a rivalry that produced more matches than the Djokodal rivalry.

On another side, if one refers only men tennis, then Djokovic in this case, was better off by specifying that this is the biggest rivalry in ATP / men tennis.

kapiche Nadal devotee?

Maybe one of these days people will understand that men's tennis and women's tennis are not the same sport.

They love pretending it's the same game yet I've never heard anyone stand up and throw great doubles players into the mix for these discussions. Are they not also tennis players?

the fact you are ignorant, doesn't make your statements true. i have many times here refuted the GOAtHOOD of the current generation (fedalovic) because of that exactly... they dont have a resume to show in Doubles and Mixed doubles, unlike many of the past greats!

Well, if she was gonna virtue signal, at least she should have stated that there were several men's rivalries from the pre open era days that played way more than 80 times.

Whether people like it or not, men’s sport is the highest level competition and attracts the most viewership in almost every sport. The best in the men’s competition is the best overall, which cannot be said about women’s, juniors or wheelchair competition. Therefore it is only logical that it is seen as the default. The whole discussion is moot.

Two guys baseline botting and playing the same way on every surface - not for me.

Also lol@ Martina. Women’s sport is an inferior product so why would anyone need to specify men’s? Best of men is usually best of all the sport.

he never said "greatest rivalry" he said "biggest head-to-head ever... he's definitely my greatest rival."

Has anyone ever written a book about women's tennis or made a film, like (Borg & McEnroe) Fire & Ice, about it?

Evert simply corrected someone that needed correcting. Djokovic needs to be hit with reality as often as possible since he obviously tries to live in a dream world. Besides, Djokodal rivalry is WAY too overrated. 12 of their last 14 matches have been decided in straight sets. Rather watch Fedal or Fedovic.

I will quote, but you can see it as well in the OP:
"Our head-to-head is the biggest head-to-head ever in the history of the sport"

so there is nothing wrong with correcting Djokovic on factual mistakes.

i guess now we measure the validity about something based on the fact there is a book about it... i'm cool with that!!!!

You just said that "she has the moral right". Well, she was factually incorrect. While her rivalry with Martina had more matches, there were several men's rivalries that had more than 80 matches. So, she was factually incorrect. Doesn't seem that she has the moral right any longer, does she?

would "Battle of sexes" qualify as a film aka movie?
cause it is about the foundation of WTA pretty much.

oh, these Nadal devotees never stop in impressing with their ignorance.

Well, technically even that movie is about negative identity, as it directly compares them to men in kind of a misleading way.

if you ask me, she has the right, cause she pointed her rivalry as bigger than Djokodal
it is however another discussion that 2 wrongs don't make 1 correct.
