Vliegen on Cañas!

Vliegen in his (dutch) press conference this week, after his win over Gasquet:

V: Cañas can play 10 hours... I can't play ten hours...

V: I don't like those people. It are the rules that when you do your time after being caught you can come back... But still I don't like those people.

V: It's an extra motivation for me to beat Cañas...

Some years ago, in 2005, Vliegen said something in the Belgian Press that he thought there was something fishy about Cañas and Puerta in their Semi-Final.

V: See I was right when I said they were doped...

So Vliegen hates Cañas' guts and he'll beter watch out because every ball will be coming 10km/h faster than normal...

GO VLIEGEN!

i love that guy Vliegen. And hope he wins but i doubt it. Canas should be banned for ever. I think they should do that to everyone who uses drugs in tennis, soccer, basketball and so on

This has been discussed many times, and I do happen to believe that he accidentally took his wife's (GF?) medication on accident. Besides, they found that it was a masking agent, not actual juice. The fact that Canas was able to beat Federer twice in a months time is proof that he didn't mean to take the drugs.

Cañas and Puerta played in the quarterfinal, 2005. In retrospect it's a match I'd quite like to see.
These comments do add a bit of spice to Cañas vs Vliegen, I'll look out for that one.

Maybe he's just pissed cause he has never defeated Cañas.
0-2, and most likely, a 0-3 after tomorrow ;)

Get your facts straight. Canas was given cough/throat medicine by a tournament doctor at a tournament in Mexico that contained diuretics. Diuretics are medicines that induce increased urination and are used by dopers to mask the use of performance enhancing drugs. Canas successfully appealed the sentence on the basis that he did not take those drugs voluntarily and it was given to him by none other than a tournament director. The ATP still fined him with 15 months suspension because a player is responsible for taking meds even if others give it to him.

^^^here we go again, Cañas honest or cheater, the battle rages on. *yawn*

I'm not discussing *WHETHER* he cheated or not, just the *STORY* surrounding it.

In other words, for people like Rhino that have poor comprehension skills, here's the dumbed-down explanation of what I said - "NOT GIRLFRIEND'S MEDICINE, DOCTOR GIVE MEDICINE"

Yeah Pointless... Everybody has a different opinion... But Vliegen thinks he was doped and it will be very interesting to see him getting pumped to beat Cañas...

Sorry, wrong doper. Who was it that I was thinking of then?

If Canas gets to the semis and so does Federer, it'll be interesting to see how Federer handles him.

Will he wilt under added pressure to avenge his earlier defeats? Will he step up and punish Canas for the earlier debacles?

I haven't seen Canas play thus far in the tournament, but if he does get to the semis, I think Roger might have to step it up a notch and bring his A game. (Which is about what he would need for the semis anyways)

He was doped so what! Get the hell over it. Some people continue to dwell on past things which don't make a damn difference when they step out on the court.

So What???

That's a disgrace being doped, and we should care because those people ruin sports...

I don't quite follow your logic...

Well, when you come back to the tour after a 15 month layoff and you win one of the first tourneys you play (I think it was Buenos Aires), and then less then a month later you beat Roger Federer in a tourney that he has won the past 3-4 years (can't remember which one) and has a 50+ win streak on American soil. Then 3 weeks later, you beat him again and make it to the finals of a Masters Series Tourney. Then you go to Barcelona and you make another final, I'd say my logic isn't that far fetched.

Vliegen has a very big mouth and always does child comments, I think it was at Rome or Monaco that he got to play Nadal a Vliegen said that everybody knows how Nadal plays and it was not going to be hard to beat him (Nadal), but he almost got bagelled, Im pretty shure he will lose to Willy...

So, according to you, beating a great player PROVES that you didn't mean to take the drugs?

Legolas, I agree. Any player caught cheating should be banned forever. However, if this were the case Argentina probably wouldn't have enough players to field a Davis Cup team.
Acasuso, Zabaleta, Monaco, Nalbandian, Calleri, Gaudio, Del Potro, Prieto, Berlocq, Hartfield, Vasallo-Argüello and Roitman.

That sounds like a very good Davis Cup team. Specially Acasuso-Nalbandian-Calleri-Del Potro-Monaco and Prieto for the doubles.

Uh, yeah. Other than Nalbandian and Gaudio, I'm not sure if I've ever heard of any of those guys. Sorry, I just don't hear much about Argentina tennis in the news, except when an Argentine is busted for cheating or for spitting at an opponent.

I say Nalby and gaudio (if he gets back to form) for singles and calleri and canas for doubles. They'd definitely win over almost any country.

And Go canas! He's taking out vliegen in 3.

Calleri, Cañas, Monaco and Nalbandian are Top40.

It's funny how people are so enraged about Canas' infraction even though the facts are clear that this agent was in a medicine given to him by and ATP trainer.

Even if he did dope on purpose (which he obviously did not!) shouldn't he deserve a second chance? People are acting like he killed someone.

I hope Canas beats Vliegen easily.

Vliegan is going down in 3 sets. Canas is in best shape of his life, playing best tennis of his life, how can he possibly lose?

They'd be banning a lot of people. I'm one who believes that drugs and doping are much more common in sports than we're lead to believe. I still hear body builders deny using steroids.

Well, the '"drug" you are talking about was given to him by none other that the ATP itself!!!!

I dunno, maybe the same way he lost in Rome and Hamburg. To be honest, I don't think it's left entirely up to him wether he wins or loses. He has to hope and pray that his opponent isn't on that day and hitting their shots.

Wrong. A lot of misinformation flying around. This has all been debated before, below. Canas lost his appeal, the original decision was upheld. He was never able to supply any proof to support his story, but the ATP generously gave him the benefit of the doubt out of compassion and reduced the duration of his ban. Also, the ATP did not supply the medicine he claims he took.
