Djokovic has an endurance problem!

Ever since Covid Cup in Serbia.

Doesn't always manifest itself very noticeably, but it is present.

That's what plagued Nadal in 2015, which is why it was such a horrendous year for him.

Stamina is a very important part of both's game and provides them their mental edge, more so with Nadal, against other players. Without it, they will give up on matches they are not winning easily.

Djokovic betta recovery by next year!

He was breathing very heavily at the end of the first set. Whilst he struggled physically, he also had bigger problems mentally as Med was out playing him at his own game. Second set he looked like he was struggling and ended up saving himself for Zverev on Friday. As has been said on other threads definite hint or even outright tank.

Did Rafa have COVID in 2015? Rafa said he had confidence problems he never said anything about his endurance.

He might just tank the 1st round at the AO. Why not? Seems to be his goto nowadays according to his fans.

It may not be an endurance problem as a result of having Covid. Did anyone ever consider the fact that he's getting older? I mean come on.... not everyone is going to be able to play through their 30's like Federer did. Federer is a very rare exception to the normal life of a tennis player. Nothing makes me think that Novak will have the strength, stamina and shear will to win for as long as Federer has. Novak's time is just about over with now. And his fans are going to have to accept the fact that he will never reach 20 slams like Federer and Nadal.

It’s nothing to do with endurance or coronabullcr*p symptoms. It’s called ‘age’. Unfortunately it catches up with everyone, yes...even Ultron.

Covid or age or trouble in the preparation, I don't know, but I completely agree with this. Djokovic is FAR from what he used to be when it comes to endurance.

Let’s see.

since Covid break Novak has played 25 full matches and lost 3 of them. That‘s almost a 90% win rate at age 33. He also lost the DQ but that didn’t reach even one set and tells us nothing about his endurance

he won two masters including one on clay, the surface that most demands endurance. And reached the FO final, stopped from winning only by the FO GOAT.

so what are we talking about again?

No problems, just timing and the tournament itself.

For a few years now the big 3 schedule and prepare for grand slams very differently so they are ready for potential five setters. Also the big 3 use the early rounds in grand slams to build their game, whereas atp finals at their age is like playing semi finals from the start.

If Djokovic prepared for this properly like he will for the Australian, result would have been different today.

But interesting watching Medvedev, very interesting player. Very very few can match Djokovic's ability to keep returning balls, Medvedev seems to have that.

Can confirm. When i hit 30 i just collapsed after every step with breathing problems and it just increased every year and i got less and less mobile and now i'm a potato. Seriously tho, He just got out-played by the better player in the first set and he tanks the second knowing he has a better chance against Zverev whilst also potentially avoiding Nadal in the SF.

Why would he avoid Nadal in the SF when at this point in his career, Nadal is an easier opponent on HC than Thiem is?

As someone who works in healthcare, COVID-19 is real and even those who survive often have long-term complications. I just hope you never get it.

No, that's my conjecture as to why Nadal had confidence problems in 2015. His lost stamina which resulted in a collapse of his legendary mental toughness. Why he lost endurance that year, I don't know...
I stated the same in 2015 on this forum.

I ******' said he would never be the same after COVID, and a lot of people didn't think that was possible.

Since COVID, he has no Slams and looks like he's aged 3 years since AO.

Are you kidding op
Nope!
How else do you explain some of Djokovic's performances this year?

His horrendous loss to Nadal in the French Open final. He was going for way too much because he knew he couldn't hang with or outlast Nadal thus made a lot of errors.

Now, why he's suffering endurance issues, I don't know. Could be covid, could be mental, something physical, etc...

The medical evidence becomes clearer and clearer -- covid19 can cause fibrotic changes in the lungs, and many with these changes, including people in their 20s and 30s, show no sign of improvement thus far. I don't know if that's Djokovic's problem, but it's certainly a possibility.
Maybe. In any case, he didn’t show any symptoms at Cincy, USO or RG...so go figure.

I called this at Cincinnati. The RBA match was very telling. Then when Edmund was not spraying errrors Djokovic looked tired, against PCB he was getting manhandled which got him frustrated and against Nadal he looked beat after the 1st game.
Players have worked out that not making too many UFEs reduces Djokovics threat. It is worrying for Djokovic as in wintry FO conditions and indoors stamina should not be bothering him. In the heat over 5 sets on what we have seen past couple of months he is going to be vulnerable.

He should have spent the summer resting and working on his game and not running round endangering people and getting sick.

Let us hope it is nothing to do with covid. I am sceptical about this pandemic and here is not the place to discuss it but there are rumours about long term effects of Covid ranging from fatigue, loss of lung capacity and increased irritability and mood swings.
Hopefully it is just loss of form.

Novak's always huffing and puffing when the match isn't going his way. He's one of the biggest possum players out there. If he had an actual endurance problem it wouldn't manifest itself before the first set is even over. Certainly not in his just his 2nd match after an off-day.
That! Novak will come out in all blazing glory against Zverev.

Nadal just had no confidence in his forehand in 2015.
Nothing to do with endurance.
In fact Nadal beat Wawrinka/Murray in straight sets at the end of 2015 at the ATP Finals! It was all mental, not physical, or else his body would have gotten worse at the end of the year.

And do you think this is where he expected to be? Yes, his results are objectively very good, but they are not where the consensus best player's expectations are.

He's 33 years old. Did anyone really expect a return to 2011 or 2015 Djokovic? That stage is long gone.

in 2020, at an age when most pro players are retired, he won a slam, gained another YE1 and is now weeks away from breaking the weeks at number 1 record. Sure, he would have loved to win more slams but his second best slam was cancelled and he was DQd at the USO. So of the two slams he played without problems he reached the finals in both and won one of them. And it took the clay GOAT to stop him. Not too shabby

The end of a season does not an entire year make.

Hilarious that Djokovic fans are now (finally) playing the age card, now that it affects him.

Guess what? In 2017, at age age when 99.9% of pro players are retired, Fed at age 35 won two slams. In 2018, when Roger was 36, he won a slam and became the oldest won #1 in OE history. Djokovic fans at that time trashed all this as utterly meaningless. Novak is 2-3 years younger than Fed was then.

Why is anyone in that fan base playing the age card?? This is beyond hypocrisy.

Don't place all Novak fans in the same basket. I certainly never trashed what fed did at 35+. Quite the contrary. Not only is it an incredible achievement it also pushed my favorite player to continue gunning for more wins. So a win win for tennis from my perspective

You called that Med was going to destroy him. Why? You don't agree that something, I think lack of endurance, is ailing djokovic?

DRII

It is a bad comparison because Djokovic won a slam and 2 masters and Nadal won some 250s/500s events
Like i said,

i don't think Djokovic has been affected by lack of endurance until after his event he held in Serbia.

so you comparing the whole year vs Nadal's 2015 is not apt. anyway, the lack of endurance is not going to affect each the same. i also said that Nadal's great mental strength is more depended upon his stamina than it is for Djokovic.
