Mentally Weak Players

Hmmm

Paul-Henri Mathieu, Guillermo Coria, Marat Safin (2 grand slams, tough davis cup victories excluding), James Blake, Elena Dementieva, Amelie Mauresmo (one and a half grand slams excluding).

But I think that all players go through some mental lapses.

Anna Kournikova.. there is no other possible reason she would be able to retire with ZERO (yes ZEROOOO!!!) titles to her name. People say she sucks but cmon she didn't suck THAT much.. she was a decent top 15 player, couldn't she at least have bagged some title like Gold Coast or Acapulco??

I would say just the opposite for Demetieva. Admittedly, her serve problems are tied to her mind, so in that sense she is mentally weak.

But, her achievements with that serve are extraordinary. Going into matches she knows she can't rely on her serve, knows she can get broken at any time and still she has had a stellar, if not chamption-level career, making two slam finals, a couple of other SFs, winning some fairly large non-Slam tourneys and beating top players.

James Blake. 0-9 five set record. That should qualify.

Thats true, but at the same time her serve is entirely mental, her camp has even said she has a good serve, she just can't change it and bring it into matches... she can't mentally make the switch to better her serve.

I think it had something to do with an injury she had early in her career.

Gaudio, only reason he won RG was because he was the underdog. After that it has been pathetic. Hes game against Hewitt this year was a disgrace for an ex-RG champ.

Schnyder is one to mention, so long career, has been close the top for many years but no major victories.

Fernando Gonzalez, Gaston Gaudio, Cedric Pioline
I remember a SF match in Miami where Gonzalez actually made a sign with his hand to his coach telling that he had miss an easy shot because of fear. He had a good lead and ended up losing to Coria (who I think was mentally VERY strong until that FO final).

right now it has got to be James Blake.
I mean come on he can play, not at the level of a Federer or a Nadal but for pete's sakes Blake can't fcking win a 5 set match;even on HC.
his record in 5 set matches makes Gasquet's look good, for a young guy.

jame blake, watched him play in legg mason, he would actually give a thumbs up sometimes followed by a shout of "too good" to the opponent.

whats todd martin's 5 set record?

Todd was anything but a mental midget. I would classify him as an over achiever.

Yes, he had that horrible choke at Wimby but so has most every other player at one time or another. Anyone remember Agassi's numerous chokes?

I agree. Coria was mentally VERY strong, until that FO final. That was a blow he didn't recover. He kept the mental strenght up, until those two finals against Nadal. Then, it was downhil for him.

And how can we forget Goran Ivanisevic?? :D
