Every player before Thiem who has made 3+ Major finals has won a Major

9 players who have made 2 Major finals in the Open Era have not won a Major: Miloslav Mecir, Alex Corretja, Mark Philippoussis, Kevin Curren, Robin Soderling, Kevin Anderson, Cedric Pioline, Todd Martin, and Steven Denton. Conversely, before Thiem, zero players who have made 3+ Major finals have failed to win a Major. That's a pretty good indication that Thiem will eventually win a Major, but not necessarily this Major (Lendl and Murray lost their first 4 Major finals; Agassi lost his first 3).

i think he will win a major in the next 5 years, just not this one.

Anderson and Mecir in the same category. Proof that God hates tennis.

But yes, I’ll be surprised if Thiem never wins a major. His consistency at Roland Garros alone makes it quite likely. Now he’s clearly a threat elsewhere too. Things are looking good for the Austrian Death Machine.

Great stat, BUT.....

All those previous 0-2 losers didn't have the benefit of the homogenized era, an era of extended careers. This era or the next one will give us a player who is 0-3 and never wins a slam.

Anderson lucked out with two slem finals, but it can't be said that Mecir was unlucky not to win a slam since he got his rear handed to him hard by Lendl both times. Rather, the likes of Johansson got lucky to meet an opponent who was out of sorts for whatever reason.

What's true is that players such as Mecir and Nalbandian are better than those who won a slam such as Gaudio, Johansson and Costa.

Interesting stat, and it does indeed feel like this is almost a "now or never" moment for Thiem. If he loses on Sunday and then loses another RG final to Nadal which could also happen, those consecutive finals lost might build up an insurmountable mental block.

0-3 or 0-4 surely wouldn't look good at first glance, but let's note that there's arguably no greater challenge in tennis than having to play slam finals against RG and AO GOATs on multiple occasions. No one else was ever able to beat these guys at their pet slams in finals.

He will be winning majors. It's just a matter of how many, and where.

You can add US Open to the list of possibilities, he has played well there for quite a few years now.

Wimbledon looks like a bridge too far. Thiem is one of the many nextgen who is not prioritizing developing his grasscourt game.

None of them came up against the 3 goats of tennis. If Thiem fails he will have lost at RG twice to the Clay Goat and once at the AO to the AO goat so it’s actually acceptable

Not just AO Goat.... Hardcourt Goat.

Not yet. If Djokovic wins two more HardCourt Majors, he will earn that denomination with all rights.
Let's wait a little.

If he keeps playing the GOAT of every slam in all finals, he may not ever win a slam even playing 10 finals :-D

This era is pretty much an exception to everything seen in the past.

In his career, I expect Thiem to win more majors than Zverev.
