And also at 1996 St. Poelten, struggling with an ankle injury against Goellner, Muster was 2-6 down in the third set tiebreaker and facing 4 match points. Muster won 7 of the next 8 points to win the tiebreak 9-7, and the match with it, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6. It came at a price though, as it ended his tournament, and his match with Stich at the 1996 French Open was a case of both players having had recent ankle injuries.

Quite a few players have won titles, after saving match points in 2 different matches along the way. I don't think any player has done that more than once, but I could be wrong. Below are examples I'm aware of where players did so back to back in their semi-final and final matches:

Davydenko at Moscow in 2004 (1 vs. Youzhny and then 3 vs. Rusedski)
Moodie at Tokyo in 2005 (4 vs. Nieminen and then 2 vs. Ancic)
Querrey at LA in 2010 (1 vs. Tipsarevic and then 1 vs. Murray)

VIjay Amritraj won his title at Bretton Woods in 1973, saving match points in 3 different matches along the way (I think the only time that has happened); 3 vs. Humphrey Hose in the 1st round (trailing 0-5 and 0-40 in the final set), 3 vs. Laver in his QF (trailing 4-5 and 0-40 on Laver's serve in the 2nd set) and 2 vs. Connors in the final (trailing 4-5 and 15-40 in the final set).

On the subject of Djokovic, he is the only man to have won multiple majors from match point down in the open era, of course with Federer on the receiving end both times.

In addition to 1995 thanks to Muster's huge contribution, 2002-2003 looks to have been a golden era for this. In 2002, there were 3 different weeks in which 2 separate tournaments were won by players that had saved match points en-route, Escude in Rotterdam and Massu in Buenos Aires in February, Nalbandian in Estoril and El Aynaoui in Casablanca in April, and Kuerten in Costa do Sauipe and Kafelnikov in Tashkent in September.

There have been 13 occasions that players have won majors from match point down on the women's side, 3 of them by Serena (at the AO in 2003 and 2005 and Wimbledon in 2009), and 8 of them at the Australian Open (1991, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2021), and 11 of them in the 21st century / within the last 20 years.

At RG, Kuznetsova held a match point in her 4th round match in 2004 against the eventual champion Myskina, and then the next year held 2 in her 4th round match against the eventual champion Henin.

Venus beating Capriati in the 2001 Miami final after saving 8 match points was quite something. It definitely wasn't a high quality match, with Venus hitting a huge number of UEs and Capriati serving a large number of double faults, but it was certainly dramatic.

Capriati had some tough defeats in Miami finals from 2001-2003:

2001 - lost 6-4 1-6 6-7(4) in 2 hours and 24 minutes, after holding 8 match points.
2002 - lost 5-7 6-7(4) in a match that lasted more than 2 hours. She broke Serena 3 times in the 1st set, and served twice for the 2nd set and had 7 set points. In 10 consecutive matches between them from RG 2001 to Wimbledon 2003, this was the only one that didn't go a 3rd set.
2003 - lost 6-4 4-6 1-6 to Serena in the final. This was the 3rd of 4 consecutive matches between them in which she won the opening set but went on to lose.

No they shouldn't, as good as Muster was on clay he never went into second RG final, only one final.
Somehow he always lost in semi. You know how much Muster underachieved when you see Tod Martin making two slam final and Muster only one
Zverev already made one final( which he choked), and Med two, Thiem 4

That’s because I see this same stuff from you in nearly every one of your posts. Every time you make one of your visits to the forum, you’re always delivering some subtle insult or even a backhanded compliment (“Big 2” or “Fed has no shame in being 3rd best”) to Federer. Naturally, of course, your consistent baiting gets tiring after awhile and it eventually approaches the point where it’s difficult to whip up serious responses to you. I’m not actually interested in debating you, truth be told.

Federer technically has two more tournaments he won after saving MPs, 2003 Houston Masters Cup (RR vs Agassi) and 2006 Shanghai Masters Cup (RR vs Roddick)

But losing either of those two matches wouldn't have knocked him out of the tournament (assuming all else stayed the same)

Murray had to save SEVEN match points to beat Kohlschreiber in the semis of 2017 Dubai (went on to beat Verdasco in straights in the final).

He also had to save at least 1 match point against Raonic in the semis of 2016 WTF (went on to beat Djokovic in straights in the final).

He had Murray dead and buried both matches and lost. I think he gave him the bird after the loss in Valencia. Couldn’t believe it.

This is easily the best display of mental strength I’ve ever heard of. Nothing will come close to this. Two GOAT contenders defeated from MP down and then another 3 saved against another guy for good measure. Incrdible.

Djokovic won Cincinnati 2023 after saving match points and Adelaide 2023.

So now he is at 9. The toughest cookie in finals.

He has lost one time in finals after having championship point. Vs Cilic in queens club 2018.
