not completely unsurprised, also just want people to keep in mind that this man is almost 40 with two knee surgeries (i know we're used to people winning **** with apparently the shoddiest knees tin the world) and most people didnt even think he would get through yesterday's match, why risk any further damage to the body, he wasnt going to win anyway and i think this is where his rule of never retiring kind of comes into play, because once he steps on court he intends to play all the way through so i guess he felt it was best to withdraw.

in most sports this is completely normal and uncontroversial

athletes pull out of competitions if it's in their best interest in the bigger picture. No one bats an eyelid. It's a competitive sport and they are expected to be utilitarian and cynical.

none of this feigned antiquated code-of-honor nonsense that people just cling to because they are looking for something to whine about.
