Is Nadal more obsessed than Novak?

Krish0608

Last year Rafa called Novak “obsessed” with the slam record. This week we have got to know that he’s numbed his foot, “put his foot to sleep”, pushed his body to the very extreme by taking nerve injections to get through RG and win it. He said he couldn’t walk after the Moutet match. He could have easily withdrawn from the tournament. And yet he continued to push his body to an absurd degree just to extend his slam lead. I knew it was bad. But it was a bit shocking for me to see the extent to which he has gone to win this. To me this is way more obsessive than anything Novak has ever done. Was Rafa projecting with he said Novak was obsessive?

No he did it because he loves the game, hater!

I and many of my friends consider permanently severing nerves to numb pain receptors in our feet just to play the game we love, and for the love of the game only. This is very normal behavior.

And you know, good for him. He's 36 and still has the drive to go through all this. But yeah, I definitely don't want to hear anything from Rafa, his team or his fans about Novak caring more about records just because he's the only one actually being honest about it.

I don’t think so.

I think it’s his life passion and he loves to play.

it’s not as if this is the first time he’s sacrificed massive health investments and pain to play.

I don’t think it matters to Fed anymore.

Not that it didn’t.

i just think he knows it’s over.

probably not anymore, he knows that ship has sailed especially with all his health problems in the last few years. But it mattered to him until at least 2019 I would say. I think he would have retired many years ago already if Nadal and Djokovic were not around.

All pro athletes are sociopathic-level competitive, when compared to normal people. So, just imagine how insanely competitive one has to be, when even amongst their peers, they stand out. (ex - Jordan, Kobe, etc..)

So, you're going to have to put on headphones so you don't hear anything!

Yes it was projecting and hypocritical at that.
However he was right to criticize Djok, since Djok's attitude is basically terrible.

Yes, I tend to agree that all of them are extremely driven and want that slam record. But after this tournament I will use the word “obsessed” only for Rafa. If Novak was obsessed he would have Vaxxed himself and turned up to collect his annual slam trophy in Australia.
While I don't like the low key flame war between them and I don't really wanna peddle the vaccine BS in any record chase, in this context the refusal to take vaccines is actually pretty damned relevant.

No idea how much of that he really meant, who knows with him. The Nadal is sly and cunning in his ways. Pity we're never going to hear his unfiltered takes on everything.

He’s had multiple nerve injections, got a doctor with him for 2 weeks, deadened his foot completely for the tournament, and was apparently unable to even walk after one of his matches. He seems to be willing to sacrifice his legs for the record. That’s frankly just.. how shall I put it.. psychotic?
Either that or he’s grossly exaggerating his injuries as I had always suspected.

It would be foolish to think nadal is not obsessed with the slam record and he wants to create distance from novak. Keep in mind nadal is one year older than novak. I think nadal sees this and wants to stick around as long as he can bag some slams.

rafa said so but he was wrong at djoker
at least he insists not getting the jab and i respect him on this one
both are not obsessed but as rafa lost due to djoker last year due to the foot, rather than for other reasons, he is determined to win it back

You’ve got to be obsessed to have achieved what the big3 have accomplished. I think Nole was more honest in that regard.

If only Agassi cared one-tenth as much about tennis as any of the Big 3 do. You may actually have a case that he is the BOAT. Oh well

Yes, 100%. Nadal will literally give his body to win slams. Novak won’t get a needle put inside him because it opposes his principles or whatever. The “Novak is obsessed while Nadal is a calm fisherman“ theory is debunked.

Yes he is obsessed. Just as obsessed as Djokovic, even more so, but at least Djokovic admits it. Nadal cannot even admit it, that's the sad part of all this.

I was so confused how he was playing much better than expected against Djokovic. I thought the injury would hamper him. But he was playing like a prime Nadal on Chatrier in that match. It just didn't make sense. Now we know he was using drugs to help him.

Some are very salty, but this is fair criticism. I think Novak is seen as being more obsessed because he’s more animated on the court. I think all 3 has “obsessions“ with winning though.

If he only wants to compete he would use the same medication in London, but he already said he wont. Of course he is obsssesed. Why no sit back, heal foot as much as you can and then come back to play like Roger is doing right now? He would prolong the carrer that way, but he is risking to be wheelchaired for the rest of his life just to get the record. Can you imagine if in the end, while being prevented to compete in AO and in W20, Novak becomes slam leader in the end. All of this would be for nothing.

Nice attempt. For starters, take a look at how many slams Nadal has skipped in his career. He skipped USO 4 times, and that's his second best slam. Doesn't look like a player who is obsessed with records. On the other hand, how many times did Djokovic skipped anything?

He wouldnt have won any of those he skipped, maybe 2020 but it was his choise not to play, so it shouldnt count.

I don't know, I'll ask someone who actually watches tennis to find out.

Rafael Nadal yesterday to all the posts about him on this site:

I know I’ve only joined in a period where he’s been winning, so I cannot directly compare to how Novak’s treble was received in 2021 (or Federer’s 2017, etc), but I’ve gone from amusement to mild horror at what Rafa is capable of doing to people on this site. It’s just a bit sad really fellas

Well, on one end you have a guy who openly tells that he would like to be the one with most Grand Slam titles when the Big 3 end their respective careers, every time when he's asked about that by journalists.
And then he willingly doesn't get a vaccine shot, knowing that would make him unable to compete for more Grand Slam titles or stop the main rival in his quest to win more titles, so that could directly influence the GOAT race.

While on the other hand you have a guy who says that he's not interested in GOAT race and that he plays tennis out of passion and fun, and that it doesn't matter who ends with most Grand Slam titles.
And then he proceeds risking his foot's life, which could make him unable to walk and lead him to become a cripple in the future, who plays forcely tournaments through injections which numbs his foot (???) and has a lot of pain in it and requires a hell of a treatments and medications daily.

It seems that someone is not being honest here out of these two guys.

I can never take injections to win the same title a 14th time. He is obsessed of course. Anyone denying it is being obtuse. I find it strange that he chose to call Novak out on it. Thats quite uncharacteristic of him.

Theres intense competition going on between Novak and Rafa. You can see in their comments, handshake and all.

Part of it is gs count and who is goat, part of it is ego particularly when djoker beat nadal in rg last year
