I strongly believe that the Russian's rise to the top isn't gonna last..! It's more or less upto the Williamses - either Venus or Serena to bring the best form to the fore and complete the formality.......!
Yes, and she is the one of the three players who reached the top spot with out a GS title..
Our dear Ms. Jankovic and Clijsters were the other two....!

''Last week's Sony Ericsson Open saw Serena Williams manage to hold on to the top spot by reaching the final. However, the injury took it's toll and according to the latest reports from Marbella, Spain, the 10 time major champion has suffered a first round exit, eventually losing the valuable ranking points and thereby allowing Safina to usurp the No.1 position.''
i totally agree man...! It was the untimely injury that made Serena lost the Miami final and then lose the top ranking as well..Since the U.S. Open, She has been in unbelievable form...and she truly deserves to be the top most player in rankings
Clijster won 2005 US Open and Mauresmo won an Australian Open and a Wimbledon crown.
I like Safina, don't get me wrong, but I find it really sad that Safina can get to the #1 ranking.. I'd rather see Dementieva as #1.
Serena is the only one who deserves #1 though imo..
I just hope that Safina does not face the similar criticism that Jankovic had to....just becoz of her inability so far, to win a G.S. After all, she is not a self proclaimed No.1 .....right....?
But on the other hand, staying on top is a real challenge for anyone....whether sports or otherwise,,,and i doubt Safina's abilities on that front.....
Serena is gonna hit back with double the force, and then dethroning Safina won't be too tough a task for her.
Again bashing as expected. Serena was not in any "unbelivable" form since USO. She failed miserably in TMC and she had several pathetic losses in September, October and November. Also if Safina's and Jankovic's #1 are not "deserved" than Serena's AO title is even more "undeserved". She didn't play good at all there and won it only because she was lucky, organizers helped her with roof closing, Azarenka was sick after schooling her in the first set and Kuznetsova and Dementieva choked.
Also she was recently demolished by Azarenka in Miami and lost to #95 ranked player in Spain. Performance not worthy of #1 player.

I don't agree with you.....! Serena did have a good end to the 2008 season. And as far as winning the Australian Open with a bad form is concerned, helloooooo....! It's a grand slam, no one can win it without playing well. It doesnt matter who choked and who didn't. no covered roof can help any player, and if it does, doesn't it help the opponent at the same time.
Reminder : the AO final score was 6-0, 6-3....If that's not a good display of tennis,, then i dont know wat is.......!
Did you watch her matches against Azarenka and Kuznetsova on AO?
Azarenka demolised Serena in the first set in AO in similar fashion as in Miami final but was sick and could not finish the match.
Kuznetsova was dominating Serena and won the first set with the roof open, when organizers decided to close the roof, obviously to help Serena.
Also still waiting for an answer why is it OK to bash Jankovic and not Safina?
What good end of 2008, when Jankovic was winning all the tournaments while Serena had several early exits and failed to win a single match on TMC?

i am not here to bash Jankovic or Serena for not winning the Grand Slam finals. As i said earlier, it's not their fault that they became no. 1 without a GS title. All i am saying is that currently Serena Williams deserves to be the number one player in the world. Serena has beaten Jankovic in US Open final and Safina in AO final and so she deserves to be called the true no.1 of the women's tennis right now
Again, there is no such thing as "deserving" #1. Who gets the most points in last 52 weeks is the #1. It is as simple as that. Serena should play on more than 13 tournaments per year and perform better on clay and smaller tournaments and she would be #1. But she was not able to do that, so it is not other's players or ranking system fault.
So Safina and Jankovic have still a lot of time to win GS titles
Amusing. How is this going to happen? Their skills--which have prevented slam wins to this date--are not showing some mythical signs of great improvement, so when is your idea going to become reality?
Azarenka demolised Serena in the first set in AO

woulda, coulda, shoulda....as the expression goes. Azarenka did not do her job in that match. End of story.
Here we go again with hollow conspiracy theories; instead of accepting the fact the skill-challenged Kuznetsova was ultimately no match for Serena, you toss in this "obviously to help Serena" nonsense.
PROVE the organizers commited the act for your reason.
How were Mauresmo and Clijsters able to do it?
They made it to the #1 so that means they have enough skill to win a GS. If they are really going to do it remains to be seen, but history tells us that they probably will.
Well, Serena didn't do her job in Miami final and that is why she is not #1 any more.
Of course I can't prove it, but organizers didn't close the roof a day before, showing clear double standards. It was also clear Serena would not win that match if roof remained open.
Even the Miami triumph would not have helped Serena regain the top rankings. You should first get your facts right....! because she lost so many points by losing the first round in marbella, safina rose to the top spot. It's not just about losing the Miami final. Points she gained in Miami were mostly gone in vain becoz she did not perform well in the next tournament, becoz she is supposed to defend her earned points in Miami and she could not
What are talking about? She didn't play in Marbella last year so no point to defend there and also she didn't do her job there to so I don't see your points. But you are partly right, another reason is that she needs to defend her points from Charleston next week.
Anyway if she was able to do better in RG, TMC, play more than 13 tournaments last year and not make so many early exits in smaller tournaments, I.E. "do her job" she would be #1.
What safina did during the last season was commendable. runner up finish in roland garros, wins in berlin, los angeles, tokyo and montreal brought her so close to the no. 1 rankings last year... She deserved to win the most improved player of the year award.....
However, even after dethroning Serena for the no. spot this week, Safina will not be considered a contendor for the european claycourt season tournaments......Williamses will still lead the race for contendorship to those titles...and if poor performance on clay is to be considered, then Azarenka's, Zvonareva's and Ivanovic's of the game have an equal chance
Azarenka's, Zvonareva's and Ivanovic's of the game have an equal chance
I'm going down to the Family Circle next week and am really looking forward to seeing Azarenka and Zvonareva play on the green clay. I'm disappointed that Safina isn't coming back but the field overall is solid.
Don't want to disappoint you but I think Azarenka withdrew from Charleston.
