During his match with Safin, I noticed something:

Could it be the holy grail of rackets?

Just like Federer, except he's.......

...not that good.

LOL, not that good.

He's playing well, though. Yet another good French player on the men's tour.
He is playing Safin today, so he will get some air time. I wish him well.
Allez Joss!

BTW, this guy is darn good! Great forehand, backhand, and serve. Must be the racquet. :)

I'm surprised I've never heard of him before.

I'm surprised BP, I swear I've heard his name crop up in the "no pros or juniors are using the k90" discussions.....

I took a look at his junior record and he's apparently a peer to Monfils, Baghdatis, Tsonga, Monaco and several other pros that have greater recognition. From watching him play, he's got good feel and moves well but he seems to be a little "casual" at times.

Wow,this guy just beat Safin with that "inferior" racquet :)

SPOILER ALERT!

Actually, I just saw the end, but you might catch a little flak for revealing the result....I'm thinking of the guys who cannot watch at work.
...
anyway, yeah, sweet strokes on that kid. Mentally, I think he took a few steps up this week. I'm a Joss fan.

nice win too bad Safin played like crap and needs to start playing on faster surfaces to get wins back under his belt. The clay kills his game physically and mentally

I thought Safin played great and served incredibly well, especially on critical points. Ouanna just played better.

^^^^
If that's not a K90 then I'm Roger Federer himself. :)

Not only is the throat a dead giveaway, but the headsize, string pattern, box beam, beam width, etc., etc.

Yeah, it's nice to see more pros using the frame. In Ouanna's case, his aren't kept all shiny and new like Federer's. Check the wear at the sides of the head.....

is it just me, or does it look like he wraps his overgrip in the opposite direction of the grip?

u can see the indentations of the base grip going opposite of the overgrip. interesting.

Can't believe safin blew this one, this guy had the weakest one hander I have ever seen at the pro level. Safin should have stepped on this guy's throat when he had the chance! Oh well, see you at Wimbledon Marat.

I'm not sure what match you were watching, but the one I saw, he was hitting backhand winners left and right past Safin.

Where does he rank out of France's top pros??

He's currently the 16th-ranked Frenchman, at #134.

With the Gasquet cocaine scandal and with Santoro about to retire, he maybe should be considered the 14th; with the ranking points from this French Open he might move past Adrian Mannarino at #128; maybe, I don't know how the points will work out. If he's really really good, he might move past Mathieu Montcourt at #123 even though Montcourt fought through qualies and got to the 2nd round. So at best, he'll soon be the 12th-best Frenchman... at best.

He needs to move to a bigger racquet in order to not remain a low ranked player

Also your low ranked player is ahead against a former 2-time grandslam tournament winner.

That player uses a head size of 89.5 sq inch so it is not surprising.

You have physical proof Safin's racket is 89.5 sq inch? If so, that would be so neat. Please take some pictures, measure the balance, static weight, and swing weight just like you asked Fabfed (repeatedly) to do with Roger Federer's K90.

I am sure the rest of the TTW community is interested in your findings on Safin's racket. Thanks so much.

Safin gave him too much of a target. The winners he did hit came off poor Safin aproach shots. I could tell, by the weak technique, that if Safin really started pounding away at that backhand this guy would start shanking the ball left and right. Alas Safin just isn't the player he once was.

This guy is a good player great forehand, good serve, good athlete, mean slice but he does have a weak topspin backhand but apart from that he has a good game.

I guess you didn't see all the topspin backhand passing shots that he ripped past Safin, especially the one near the end where Safin dove for the ball and threw his racquet but still couldn't reach the dipping passing shot.
