yes he did.I plan to watch the movie too,but I'm kinda sure that I'll get dissapointed. It always happens with amazing books, that the movies don't manage to live up to the expectation.:(
Yes,hehe turn of the screw is very creepy!I had to read it also again, because of the unreliable narrator.I don't get scared by watching thrillers with special effects etc..but by reading a little book:? Go figure!lol
I have read a couple Palahniuk.I think his early works are the better.(fight club, lullaby).Survivor I haven't read yet,so let us know what you think.:)

Nabokov is truely a master. I can recommend his Lectures on Don Quixote and of course, Don Quixote by Cervantes as well. Stunning literature!

he used to teach in Cornell I think. Also made lectures about Madame Bovary which he thought was the greatest book ever written.
If I remember correctly he has said that in his opinion the best works of the past centrury are:Joyce's Ulysses,Bely's st.Petersburg (which I can't find anywhere btw!!) and the first part of Proust's A la Recherche du temps perdu.
:)
But I don't agree with his opinion on Thomas Mann and Freud.(he thought they were charlatans.)

I just finished the first part and think it's a bit weird and annoying with the italics and suddendly jumping from time to time..but at the same it's very.."live" book.

I just finished The Rum Diary by Hunter S. Thompson and I can't decide whether I should read Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald or The Republic by Plato next.

What would the Founders do? by Richard Brookhiser

Its a pretty interesting read, it takes modern issues and tries to analyze how the founding fathers may have dealt with them by comparing them to things that were happening during their times.

I read "St Petersburg" years ago. It vanished, went through a period of high fame, and has now disappeared again. It may re-emerge, but not on my recommendation. The Way by Swann's and Ulysses are altogether different.

so you didn't like it?They haven't translated yet in greek! But I have heard, that like Ulysses,it's also almost impossible for it to be properly translated in another language.

Yeah,Nabokov just said what he thought were the masterpieces of literature not of the same genre. He also included Kafka's Metamorphosis.
Interestingly that Nabokov and Borges though never talked and of quite different styles each, shared the same opinion in this.

Just finished The Road by Cormac McCarthy. Best advice I could make is: Don't have sharp objects nearby while reading. However, I did enjoy reading it immensely. I thought it got stale in the final 40 pages or so, which left me a teeny bit disappointed in the end. I don't often read fiction (maybe 2 books a year for pleasure), but I may read more of McCarthy (enjoyed No Country For Old Men) in the future such as Blood Meridian or All the Pretty Horses. Now it's time for me to compile summer reading for next year's Humanities course I teach to my seniors, so I'll end up reading the 'classics' I read as a grammar school student.

Blood Meridian is a difficult read. Have a good dictionary next to you while reading. The writing is nothing like the Road.

All the Pretty Horses is much more readable and is a wonderful novel. McCarthy's best, IMO. I encourage to read it before Bloody Meridian.

The first part doesn't make much sense until you finish the novel. So, for that reason, I recommend you re-read the first part after finishing the novel. It'll make a lot more sense.

Loved The Road. Terrifying. Like AM said, Blood Meridien is different. For me, it was kind of boring. Too epic. Didn't finish it. But No Country for Old Men was pretty good.

I'm about to go and grab Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane (since the movie is coming out soon). Does anyone recommend any other Lehane books?

I read all except Memnoch and Pandora. I think Pandora is a character who DIDN'T deserve her own book, but who am I to judge?

Although, Blood and Gold was my favourite one. Marius is by far the most interesting character :)

^^^Yes, I was happy to see Marius get his own book, too.

Gosh, I haven't read any of them in ages...might have to dig them back up this summer!

Will I not understand Mr. Cahill's book without reading the bible first? Or are you saying the Bible is a better book than Mr. Cahill's? Me, I prefer Cahill's book. Much more insightful.

Just finished "No Angel: My Harrowing Journey inside the Hells Angels" or something like that...some ATF dude went undercover with the Hells Angels and now he's running for his life...*very interesting read*

Last night, I picked up Johnny Mac's "You Cannot Be Serious" and finished it in one sitting...pretty good memoir. It's interesting comparing his take on his Davis Cup with Ashe as coach and Ashe's DC coaching in "Days of Grace..."

Just saying Bible is a better book. But I do agree Cahill's book is very insightful, just the Bible is the core of where it all comes from

That Mark Cahill is giving Jesus a run for his money. His book, "The Bible", loved it. If he was on the planet today, he'd be the author of all the bestsellers.

Mav, other books that I recommend :

Starting Strength by Marc Rippetoe and Lon Kilgore

Natural Hormonal Enhancement by Rob Faigin

Functional Training for Sports by Mike Boyle

Vertical Jump Bible Development Bible by Kelly Baggett

Girth Control, by Alan Aragon

Athletic Body in Balance, by Gray Cook

Kinetic Anatomy, by Robert Behnke. This book is a nice resource for those who need an introduction to functional anatomy, without all the sciency stuff.

Buy the second edition.

Unlike many movies, this sequel is superior to the original. Every coach or personal trainer should have this in their collection.
