The Eastern Grip; The Grip of GOATs

Well, everyone used the eastern forehand grip until 20-25 years ago, the last world n0 1 with an extreme eastern-grip was Sampras.
Um...there's also a #1 named Roger Federer? Did you forget about him?

Can't get anymore Eastern grip than this.

BTW, his Eastern forehand grip is what allows Federer to drive the ball flat with tremendous pace when he wants to, while Roddick with his Semi-Western grip can't even when he tries.

Federer does use eastern.
but he has such a flexible wrist hes able to generate so much spin from it.

eastern..extreme eastern. don't see why it matters so much. Makes you guys feel better knowing you play with the same as your idol? In any case, didn't he once say (when asked about the grip he uses) something along the lines of "depends what I want to do with the ball"?

i think his index knuckle is on the point between eastern and SW
makes sense that way right? i personally use that grip and find its the perfect blend!

Roddick has gone much more western in recent years. When he was knocking the cover off the ball in 03 he was using more of a semi. Gilbert tried to get him to change it from his western, but he's gone back.

If you don't think you can drive the ball with a semi or a western grip, why don't we have a little hit sometime, like I've asked many times. :p We'll see who drives the ball more. ;-)

first off it has been said that Fed will use Semi Western depending on the shot. For example inside out shots he will use S/W but he does use an "eastern" grip even though it may be an ambiguous term.

Federer does not hit flat, WTF??? The spin is ridiculous on his forehand.

I think Federer uses the Eastern grip on more than 90% of his FH shots but he might change his grip slightly to more extreme or less extreme depending on the shots he plays.

The Fuzzy yellow balls guys did a research on this and found out that Federer used the Eastern FH 1999 out of the 2000 shots they analyzed.

I'm talking about driving the ball flat, not driving the ball with a loopy, topspin trajectory like Nadal, Roddick, Djokovic, etc.

It proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Federer uses an Eastern Grip. Get your terminology straight.

as BP has pointed out, FYB already did their homework and proved Federer hits majority of his forehands with eastern grip. There is no more need to further argue over this. He might hit with semi western once in a while, but vast majority is hit with eastern.

This surely surprises many people, since most pros hits with semi western or full western, especially the spaniards. But that is why Federer is Federer.

It isn't the grip, it is the swingpath, plenty of players can light off flat bullets with more western grips.

Someone posted an interview with Fed a month back or so and someone asked him what grip he uses on his forehand and Fed said "it depends on the shot I want to hit."

Very true,
If a western grip player uses a "full"* stroke they can execute a flat shot,
Whereas if an eastern play uses a windshield wiper stroke hey can get loads of spin.

*By full stroke I mean finishing over the shoulder.

when i was experimenting with grips a year ago i found it easy to flat shots with the western because the face is closed, and if the swing path is that of a flat shot, youll almost always get it. But shanking is common.

federer might use an eastern for his fh but its definately not the same as pete's grip. i dont know the terminology too well but i have tried to hit fhs with both pete's and roger's grips - they are not the same.

pete's fh was mostly forearm and arm. roger uses more wrist to generate the spin.

that is something i noticed while watching slo mo vids. you can really see the wrist rotation.

Who DOESN'T have a flatter trajectory than Nadal? That doesn't mean Fed hit's flat. he has wicked spin. Connors hit flat.
Ball trajectory is not the same as ball spin. You can hit the ball with more pace when you hit a flatter trajectory.

Federer uses semi-western most of the time, sometimes he uses eastern depending on what shotss he has to deal with

If you don't think that's an Eastern grip then you either seriously need to get your eyes checked or learn your grip terminology.
One last thing, if Federer (according to you) uses an Eastern grip, what did Sampras and Edberg use?? ULTRA-Eastern ? Something never heard of? Plz tell me...

Why is this such a big deal? Playing with an eastern grip does not make you a better or worse player.
Some ppl are very interested in technique, myself included...thought about that?:-?
