What's with the Williams Sisters hate?

It's just beyond me why people are so against the Williams sisters on this board... I can possibly see that Serena's off-court attitude can cause some dislike for HER, by why oh why do people dislike Venus? She is so gracious in defeat and really a class act on and off the court. She tries her hardest in every match and never makes excuses for losing or playing poorly.

Unless there's something I'm missing here, people seem to dislike Venus just because she is associated with Serena.

Comments like:
"at least we don't have to see the agony of another williams-williams match"
-> "That is the truth. I wouldn't even watch that one because they both can't lose."
really just don't make sense to me. If anything I'd think people would like Venus considering she is the gracious, kind sister. Anyone care to explain this to me?

People dont like them because they make tennis a mockery. The matches they play are predetermined exo's. No one wants to see two people collect 3million dollars for that, its a disgrace.

At least we will see a real final when one loses.

You can also factor in the extreme amount of coverage they get, taking away from matches tennis players want to see.

There are too many reasons to mention, just consider it good when they are both gone :)

If they both looked like Halle Berry maybe this wouldn't be a problem.

Anyway, they seem to have a lot of fans when they go on tournaments. It's people on this board that seem to hate them.

Henin isn't a looker yet people like her even though she has poorer sportmanship than Venus, and even arguably Serena.

@Chadwixx: A real final? Like when Serena crushed Safina in the AO final this year? Or when Safina choked yet again against Kuznetsova in the French? Oh ok, makes sense.

Frankly, I was apalled at the US Open crowd firmly cheering for Kim over Venus.

Only in America do we cheer for a foreigner over a black American champion.

One thing I can't stand about either of them is that after they win, they always dash to shake the umpire's hand prior to letting their opponents. It is tennis etiquette to let the loser of the match shake hands with the umpire first, followed by the winner.

I don't want to hear anything about disliking them because they're arrogant in their pressers. Roger is arrogant in his pressers most of the times and many on this board would glady hand over their life savings to kiss at least one of his hairy arse cheeks.

I strongly dislike serena because of her awful attitude, how she never accepts defeat and always says she played bad and the other hit lucky shots, never giving credit to the other player, and her ugly game. And in a lesser degree I dislike venus bc how loud she screams every time she hits the ball and also bc of her ugly game.

Riiiiight. It's not like Venus was being booed, I watched the match and the crowd cheered both players' winners. But even if they were cheering just for Clijsters, maybe they're just Clijsters fans rather than a 'bunch of racists'.

People hate Serena because:

1. She's arrogant
2. The media portrays her as some invincible tennis god.
3. She wins only with her brute power.


Venus? Not sure about that. She's a fine lady, and I have nothing against her. I guess some people hate the Williams sisters in general because they get so much air time. Tennis coverage in the US revolves around the Williams sisters.

Could you imagine the Belgians cheering on Serena over Kim or Justine?

serena's just annoying. I wish she'd have a heart attack and, at the very least, stop playing tennis.

only thing I have against venus is how irritating her shrieking is. Other than that I like her.

But why does this make them 'racist'? Kim is a very popular player, she was also the underdog which adds to the appeal and making a comeback. Maybe it just goes to show how beloved Kim is rather than 'racist' towards Venus. And she DID get a lot of cheers tonight.

Regarding the cheering, I think Clijsters was a great story and the American crowd love that. The former top player, now underdog, with a child, returning in her first major tournament - that counts for a lot, even if it is against an American player.

It always comes down to black ultimately, which is a shame. If Serena was white with Kournikova's look, people would not be hating her so much. But that's life.

Oh give it a rest you loser. I don't dislike Serena but if people do then there's nothing wrong with that. Maybe they just don't like her PERSONALITY rather than the colour of her skin.

Those aren't good examples since both serena and roddick aren't particularly well liked. I could imagine the crowd cheering for fed over roddick in the usa. Kim is one of the most well liked players on tour.

Does this mean when people cheer for venus or serena they hate white people (or whatever the hell color the opponent is)?

What about when two black players play? Should the fans sit on their hands the whole match so they dont offend the other?

i believe one of the cbs commentators said the crowd was cheering for cljisters because she's a mother and there were many mothers/parents in the crowd :)

All right suppose I should make this clearer... I don't question why people dislike Serena (despite being a fan of her myself). I'm moreso questioning where the dislike of Venus comes from.

loud shrieking, association with serena (which you mentioned), and hogging the spotlight although that isn't her fault.

If it were Kim versus Oudin I guarantee you the crowd would be cheering for Melanie

As far as I am concerned, Venus and Serena are justified if they never play Fed Cup

What a load of rubbish. People were cheering for Clijsters because she is former champion who is liked all around the world, people need to stop automatically assuming anyone who doesn't cheer for the Williams is a racists because that is nothing but pure ignorance.

If anyone's racist it's YOU. People of different ethnicities should be treated exactly the same as everyone else, we're all just human beings at the end of the day, no matter what our skin colour is. Therefore people should be able to voice their dislike for Serena just as they should voice their dislike for anyone, that's freedom of speech. I'm certain that the people who don't like Serena (I'm talking majority here, racists do exist of course) don't like her because of her personality. People like you with your 'She is BLACK. She is DIFFERENT. We must be very careful because she is DIFFERENT!' actually worsens the problem of racism because you keep pointing out that Serena is BLACK and she's DIFFERENT. The French and Belgian pop. is mostly homogeneous and plus their national pride is greater than ours. So of course, they would always root for their own player.
