Anybody try Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA?

Unfortunately I did not get a chance to visit the Southern Tier Brewery in Lakewood, NY as I had intended over the holiday week that I was in Erie, PA - but several brewpubs in the area carried their stock. I'm now hooked on Southern Tier Old Man Winter Ale. Despite its name, it seems to taste like a medium balanced IPA, with 7.2% abv according to ST's website. I had it on draft at two local places, and then I also drank a case of it this past week, and also picked up a case to take home (my fridge is stocked right now!). The reason I bought a case to take home is because I liked it a lot and because it is a decent price at the discount beer store I found. $29/case. So while it falls short of the 9% in the DFH 90-mnute IPA, it still packs a decent abv % and it saves me a few bucks since the cheapest I can get the DFH90 is $48/case. Much more $.

I also saw a comment above about the citrus, grapefruit aftertaste of Simcoe hops and as Z-Man called it, "new age IPAs". I believe Weyerbacher Simcoe IPA and Victory HopDevil fit into this category. I guess I just don't have a strong liking or this "new age" IPA taste yet. I like some strong IPAs but the two I named were not so good for me but two friends of mine in Erie enjoyed these quite a bit. Personal preference I guess.

I'm glad to hear more good things about Southern Tier. They are coming to my area in a few months, so I'll be on the lookout.

After reading your comment about Simcoe, I found this article:

http://www.joesixpack.net/columnArchives/2006/060906.htm

Maybe Simcoe is the source of that certain citrus flavor that seems to define the 2nd wave American IPAs. I think a long dry-hopping with Cascade might produce a similar flavor, but I'll have to learn more about Simcoe. I also prefer a more classic IPA, but I'm slowly warming up to the new style. I do know that hops prices increased over 100% two years ago, so it makes sense that brewers would gravitate (sorry for the bad pun) towards a hop with a high bitterness yield per acre. Maybe Simcoe is the Northern Lights of the hop world. I'll have to do some more research.

Last night featured Great Divide Hercules DIPA, Southern Tier Unearthly, and Lagunitas Hop Stoopid, all in bombers.

This morning sucked.

I tried the Southern Tier Iniquity last night - I personally think that it's a fantastic beer - almost like a hoppy porter instead of a black IPA, but either way, I was impressed.

Picked up the Unearthly and their imperial pale ale today as gifts for a friend going to England for a semester, so I'll likely get a sample of both. Looking forward to it for sure.

Having a bell's HopSlam at the moment. For all the acclaim it gets, I didn't know until just now that it's brewed with honey. Anyway, the nose is enormous, and I can imagine that this is what eating fresh hops would be like. And it's good.
And, SlapShot - it's on sale today only at Dennis Bros. in Cottage Grove for $12.88 a sixer.

friend brought some Sweetwater IPA from GA...a decent IPA. can't find Odell IPA around here. think you'd like that one.

Hey glad you got to try the Sweetwater IPA- that's what I drink everyday down here. As I stated earlier in the thread, really good on draft at our local Mellow Mushroom, yummy, heading their tonight as I do 3 days a week, LOL

I was actually going to run out to the Four Firkins today in Hopkins to pick some up - they presold 75 CASES.

Edit: They also ordered 20 cases for their own stock which arrived today. When I got there, they had 3 cases left. They went through 92 cases of Hopslam in one day (well....one week if you count the presale time).

Drinking some Starr Hill Northern Lights IPA. It's not bad, but I tend to like the sweeter IPAs a little more.

One of my faves. I actually like it a lot because it isn't that sweet. I'm from VA and Northern Lights is a "go to" when I'm home. When summer is rolling around look for Star Hill ' The Love'...one of the best wheat beers I've had.

I mentioned a few months ago in this thread that I've had a hard time going back to other types of beer after a year of IPA/double IPA/fresh hop beers. Well, started drinking a lot of English beers while my bro-in-law was in town (military MD stationed in England). Now I'm back to drinking Sam Smith's Taddy Porter and Oatmeal Stout. Also been drinking some Russian beer, Baltika No. 9...~8% alcohol content lager...very tasty with hints of banana. Excellent.

I love some of those microbrews they have in Northern Virginia. My wife is from there, so we used to go a few times a year before the kid came along.

Had some Fire Rock Pale Ale last night. Not bad, but I'm getting a little sick of it. I like to rotate after each six pack to something different.

I tried the 20% IPA and omg it was like drinking beer and vodka at the same time. Good taste though.

Anyone tried the Ranger IPA? I think New Belgium makes fantastic beers, but I haven't tried the IPA yet...

Ranger is great. Mighty Arrow, their spring seasonal, is excellent. I've also got some DFH 60 in the fridge. Can't go wrong with any of these.

I had a Magic Hat Vinyl today. A fun beer--lager fermented at ale temps--and the packaging is really cool. A very good beer, but maybe not a great one. Still, it's tough to say. Things taste different to me on different days, so sometimes I like to try a beer more than once before I pass judgement. It snowed like hell here today, so I might be having a few tomorrow.

Also tried a Select 55 today. 55 calories. That's crazy!

Sipping a Hop Rod Rye at the moment. It's pretty good. Made a run to Wisconsin yesterday to pick up some brews I haven't had before and some DFH 90.

Picked up some singles and made a six pack yesterday. I got:

1. Titan IPA (in honor of Bad_Call)
2. Terrapin Rye Pale Ale
3. Rocky Mountain IPA
4. Acme California IPA
5. Steelhead Double IPA
6. White Hawk Original IPA

Never had any of those.
Anybody had Arcadia Ales Hopmouth Double IPA? I swear I got a bad batch. Stuff is awful.

Anyone else have Abita Restoration Ale or IPA? Great beers. I first tried them just after Hurricane Katrina in '07 and had not seen them since. Just bought an Abita variety pack because it had 2 bottles of Restoration IPA...nice mild and spicy, not too sweet IPA.

I've had Abita before but can't remember which style. I'll post back after I have tried all 6 of mine.

Have to admit - I drank a buttload of PBR at the Habitat For Humanity concer in Lazy Lakes on Sugarloaf Key this weekend

Sounds good. In general, I think Abita beers are good but average. IMHO, Restoration is their best and slightly above average.

On another note, I visited a nice spot, Pangea Cafe, in downtown Sacramento this past weekend. A nice little espresso/pannini (probably spelled that wrong) spot with ~12-15 Belgian beers on tap. The owner used to play pro bball in Italy and got turned onto Belgian beer. I was stumbling out of that place. :) Chimay and many, many dubbel and saisons, can't remember the names. My friend lives a block away...I would be in trouble living so close.

Got a sixer of Sierra Nevada 2010 Bigfoot Barleywine last night, 9.6% alcohol, very spicy and bitter. Nice, thick and heavy mouth-feel. Two of these and you're rolling. Good stuff. I paid $13 for the six-pack and it's worth it.

My latest love has been the Bell's Expedition Stout. Rich, rich winter beer - 10.5%, and like drinking molasses. Not my favorite imperial stout (I think that's still reserved for Old Rasputin), but a very tasty beer for cold nights.

I lied, I'll give my opinion on two I had last night:

4. Acme California IPA - Went down smooth, but nothing really special jumped out with the taste. I'm glad I tried it, but would not buy a 6 pack of it.

5. Steelhead Double IPA - Packed with flavor and alcohol. Not quite as sweet as I usually like but still this is something I'd buy as a 6 pack.

Darn, I forgot to post my reviews. The only thing I remember is that the Terrapin Rye was much better on tap than in the bottle.

New favorite "bargain" DIPA: Founders Double Trouble. $9.99 for a 4-pack.

I have a 4 pack of Founder's Breakfast Stout - that stuff is awfully good.

Also tried the Dark Horse Imperial Stout - that stuff means business. 12%, and you get every bit of that 12%.

You guys need those Stouts to deal with the cold up north. We finally are seeing some moderation of the weather down here. Hopefully it heads up your direction soon.

We're in the midst of the March "warm up, then cool down and snow 8 inches" right now. It's been above freezing for the past few days, and it's felt downright balmy. ;)

But then again, I fly out to Phoenix Thursday...

And then to Dublin on April 3. Going to the Guinness brewery - it's my holy grail trip. :)

Got back from Phoenix Sunday night.

While I was down there, I tried the DFH 90 Minute Imperial IPA. Impressed. Not in love with it, but a nice blend of hops and malt for the beautiful weather that they had in Phoenix over the weekend.

Is that a stronger version than the regular 90 minute?

Not sure...haven't tried the regular. Imperials generally tend to be "amped up" versions - the best Imperial IPA I've had still is the Southern Tier Unearthly. It's a big beer for sure.

Pretty sure the "regular" 90 minute is an Imperial/Double.
The Unearthly is a good one, and relatively inexpensive, too - I've found the bombers around $6.50 at a few places.

Got some Riverhorse Hop-a-lot-amus the other day - $9.99/4-pack. 8.5%abv and a nice beer, brewed here in NJ.
I took the month of Feb off from alcohol completely. It was tough but I did it as a challenge to myself. I broke "the fast" on March 1st Belgian style with a big St. Bernardus ABT 12. Watching hockey that night, there were two of every skater on the ice!

I also like that Southern Tier Unearthly Imperial IPA as well as Southern Tier Gemini Imperial IPA. Both very good. Anyone tried them side by side? I haven't.

I haven't had them side by side, but I have had them on consecutive days. I might just like Gemini better. It's a 50/50 blend of Unearthly and Hoppe (their Imperial Pale Ale), if you weren't aware.
I've never tried Hoppe.

Hmmm...I really like Hoppe (but Unearthly is more my speed), so that Gemini might be tasty.

I tried a sampler pack of the other Southern Tier stuff (their Pack of Pales), and I was underwhelmed. Maybe I was expecting too much since I love the Unearthly and Iniquity.
