I will be honest,I just saw it and I didn't like it much.I don't think the dances and the kilt dresses and the tap dancing represented the culture of canada.

Though I usually only watch summer olympics openings so I dunno, perhaps this was the best winter olympics opening ceremony.

Anyway, good luck and thank you and well done to Canada.:)

Horrific footage of the lugers death and well, a truly terrible event. Participation in the event would probably have been one of the happiest of his life, what a shame.

Anyway, my dad's going over to work in the olympics next week, he works at all of them now.

You never know, he may have known he was going to die (or very likely) as he was flung off the luge and thought he was going how he wanted to be going. I really don't mean this in an insensitive way, I really don't. Dying doing what you love isn't a bad way to die. A part of me hopes he did feel this way and that the family know it and can take some small comfort from that fact.

Poor guy. How things can change in the blink of an eye.

So the opening ceremonies are over. It took me a while to get into it but it ended up being a fairly captivating spectacle in general. Too bad it sort of ended with a thud, what with the indoor cauldron malfunction and the oddly animated Wayne Gretzky mannequin transported across town in the back of a pickup truck to light a second cauldron. Okay...

Ha ha ha ha ha!! I thought Wayne looked great-I think he's almost 50 years old right? I want the gloves he was wearing with the maple leaf on the palm. After watching the footage of the luger's death I have a new respect for the folks who compete in that event. I also agree with mtommer-he died doing what he liked to do.

Hr changed the course for the men for the luge. Now they are started at the Womens start instead of the higher up mens one. This way they miss 3 turns and dont have as much speed going into the final turns.

thank god!The comittee said it was absolutely safe, but even the best lugers in just practise were exhausted so if they kept it we could ver well had more accidents.Wise decision!!

Hey, lambielspins-you still hang out here? I think you had the caption RIP Lambiel (or something similar) in your signature/avatar. I saw some photos of Mr. Lambiel practicing on the Olympic website-I'm glad to see he's alive and well. :)

Vancouver will put on a fine show I'm sure.

But since you brought up New York City, hmmm...that would be interesting...

My neighbor and I are thinking of forming a curling team...look out for us in 4 years!

:)

ok I've seen only ONCE a game of curling in last olympics(by mistake of course!) .What exactly do they DO?I saw some kind of bowling ball on ice and some guys with brooms around it frantically swinging them. I LMAO but I still have trouble understanding hwo the heck this became an olympics sport ( please forgive me if this is canada's national sport and I in anyway offend you) :)

I...LOVE LOVE LOVE the Olympics! And my absolute favorite is the Winter Olympics!

Some thoughts:

*I kinda liked the opening ceremony. I thought the light displays were really cool and well done. I wasn't sure how much of the performances (fiddling and clogging) were traditional, either, but maybe some of our resident Canucks can help us out?

*By the end (or close to it, I feel asleep) both me and my neighbor wanted to move to Canada!

*It was heartbreaking watching the Georgian team walk in...how utterly sad what happened to such a young athlete. :(

*I honestly don't think the US has a shot at a hockey medal. I would love to see the Canucks win it, though I think lots of teams are pretty deep and will have a shot.

*Lambiel was the...uh...'happiest'...flag bearer I've ever seen. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

*What was with the US outfits???? Cream sweaters and white pants? Were they actually pants? Or sweatpants? Or jodphurs? And tucked into boots? With big heavy jackets? Who is running the show over at Polo these days? They were only slightly outdone by the Czech federation and their crazy pants...there was another delegation with crazy pants, too, but I can't remember who they were.

I am ready for some skiing and skating...woot!

Well, I'm not a Canadian (Canadien? No, that doesn't look right...Canadienne??? XENAKIS...HELP!) so you won't offend me! ;)

Once we figure out what they do, my neighbor and I are going to *dominate* the dojo!!!!

I agree, it is NO fun to watch. Sort of like watching crokinole ( another famous Canadian game

But curling is great fun to play.

err...Canadian citizenship?? We're the ones who curl (not hair) well...that too LOL

No, if they want to make a team with my neighbor and I, then they will need American citizenship.

Or, we can all move to Canada!!! :)

I have curly hair, does that count?

They do curl in the US I think in the New England states.

But moving to Canada would be better, especially if you get to be good. Canada automatically gives citizenship to good curlers and good lacrosse players . Did you know basketball was invented in Canada by high school teacher James Nasmith of Almonte Ontario? They used a basket...a fruit basket with no opening at the bottom. And then there is Steve Nash from Vancouver where the winter Olympics are bring held.

And curly hair is a definite bonus for Canadian citizenship.

Apolo should've been disqualified in the semis as he clearly tried to knock the Korean skater over...such an arrogant *****. And Gold > Silver.

No, Apolo had a clear path for a pass and the Korean (I don't know what any of their names are) basically went into him. Minimal contact really and they finished 1,2 anyway. Yes gold is better than silver but that is Apolo's weakest event of the 3 (not counting relay). The 1000 and 500 should be even more interesting.

Obviously you love Ohno. But Short track Skating is unpredictable so yoiur guess is as good as mine if he wins or not. I remember that australian dude won the gold because the other three dudes who were ahead crashed each other out and the aussie was so far back he didnt get taken out and coasted to the gold.

Hopefully Ohno does well, but even then he will never be as good as Eric Heiden
HAHA. Ohno beneifts from the Koreans' collision.

Who else feels like Ohno is the Nadal of short track? Puts out incredible efforts, and is extremely explosive.

Couldn't agree more. This is coming from a fanboy of both of them but it is true. You subtract the soul patch and darken the skin, maybe a bit similar looking. haha:)

I admire both athletes. Those two guys strike a chord with me that makes me get behind them. Usually, when I get a feeling a tennis player is beat, they lose. I've seen Nadal come back against Federer when I thought the points, or the set was close to gone. Nadal does it often. Most guys would crumble where Nadal and Ohno find ways.

I can't believe I slept through the entire first day. I had to read that we won our first medal on the net. Damn!

Topaz, it is Canadian (no e or double n). lol. You are very welcome to move up here. What you have seen during the ceremonies (although capturing the spirit very well) is only a fraction of what there is to offer. For us, it is a state of mind.

Curling is not like bowling, it is essentially a giant shuffleboard game on ice. It is harder than it looks but so much fun to play. The sweeping controls the speed of the rock. Ahh, good times.

Glad I'm not the only one who sees a physical similarity between Apollo & Rafael. :) I also prefer the winter games to the summer games. I remember an interview with Gretzky years ago where he said that curling was more popular than hockey in Canada.
