I play as well...not very active though...FIDE rating 21something...funny, it's a bit like tennis; when I started out, I thought 2000's were gods, now I'm horrified by how weak I am :)

I'd be up for a match sometime. I'm not sure of my skill level though since I did not play for about 10 years + then started playing on my computer and beating Microsoft's version on level 10...after that I played someone who has always played chess and have an undefeated record against them. Maybe I'm on an intermediate level.

I used to. I had a little over 2000 UCSF. I didn't have an official FIDE rating but I was 2/4 against people rated an average of about 2200.

I don't play competitively anymore nor do I really play for fun.

I got a blackberry app that lets me play on the FICS. Does that mean that anyone on there regardless of app or computer can play me if it talks to the FCIS? Because that is really cool.

I suck, but I used to play a lot. I have to figure out what to focus on first to get my game back.

Ok I am playing the comuter practicing some openings and I see how they get you to buy the program. You can go online and play anyone you want for free using the FICS, BUT if you want to play the computer over level 1, you have to buy the game. I think it is impossible to lose on level 1. The computer will take a pawn with it's rook, clearly giving that piece away for no reason..just dumb stuff like that which ruins the practice. It's kind of funny because it will gladly give up it's queen just to put you in check.

I am still trying to figure out how to castle on it..I know you can because the computer does it.

I like having an AI to jam out with because sometimes you can not committ to a match with another person. What I love is that it has a chat feature so you can talk with the person you are playing.

Yahoo chess has chat on it. Sometimes you get weirdos who start cussing you out for no reason. Other times they cuss me out because I won't let them undo a move. I still need to get an account on the FICS. Played 2 games as guest yesterday.

I need to practice some more before I take it online..especially because many of the games are timed and pretty fast. I need a little time to think things out still. I'm not on the level of speed chess yet.

Pretty convingly defeated a 1790 (who dropped to 1766).

I played as white. In not wanting to give up position, he made several blunders that allowed me to attack quite easily.

I used to play every day. I was so into chess that I would forget to eat some days since I was playing the game all the time.

Many years ago a group of us in High School formed a chess team and we did fairly well in competition. One of the players, the third board went to the same University I did. He used to play every day in the cafeteria and beat up on a chess group there and he also played often after the normal school day. He developed the reputation at the school of being by far the best player there. But he did see me hanging around never saying much and I think he wanted to defeat me and prove he truly was the best there. He set up an intramural chess tournament and begged me to enter. I finally relented and entered. We both reached the finals. I will preface the following by writing he could be very obnoxious and he was a bit insecure. We all knew this in High School but tolerated it since he was a part of our team.

Anyway the night before we were suppose to play to see who would win the intramural chess tournament I walked past his dorm room where he was playing chess with a group of his buddies. As usual he was insulting them and beating up on them. He egged me on to play him. We played about twenty games of speed chess and he lost all twenty. I knew the look, he was totally demoralized. I showed up the next day to meet him in the final and he wasn't there. I arranged another time with him and he didn't show up. Finally I spoke to one of the people in the school and I just told them to make us the co-winners of the intramural chess tournament. I figured it being recognized as the best in the school meant too much to him and I didn't want to wreck it.

This was actually another reason I quit playing chess competitively. It's better to play for fun and enjoyment. Stuff like what happened with the intramural tournament is not fun at all. I wasn't getting any enjoyment from playing anymore.

I will point out that I'm not that good a player, it's just that I knew my buddies style and my style was very tough for him.

I don't profess to be very good..sometimes I play really well; other times, I lose my focus.

I was a bit of a prodigy in my junior years, I was part of USCF and won one junior state championship and was runner-up another time. Thrived mostly on English Open, Ruy Lopez, French defense.

Rarely play now.

chessjam is an excellent site to play , i used to play for like hours and for months till i realized its too addictive and i put an end to it . we can choose to play others from different countries or we can play with bots , my score went up till 1800s and then i gave up any one with 1850+ score will give u some hard time there :)

As a beginner- apply a "sanity check" to every move. Before making each move, ask yourself-- does it move a piece into danger? Does it leave a piece in danger? Are you neglecting an opportunity to grab a piece?

Also-- ask yourself: If I were the opponent, what would I do after seeing this move? Don't get so caught up in your own plans that you forget that the opponent also has plans.

Don't obsess too much about openings. Someone once said that below master level all openings are sound and he may have been right. The main goal of your opening is to get you to a solid and playable midgame.

Play a lot-- not blitz. Record your games and analyze them after the fact, especially your losses. Always be looking for tactics (pins, forks and skewers) and learn to spot them by doing tactical puzzles (these last couple things I never did, and it's probably a big reason why I never got any good at chess).

Tips for beginners / intermediates, on top of Avles' good advice above:

A lot of tactics comes down to awareness of undefended pieces or pawns, both one's own and one's opponents. I saw this described in one book as LPDO (loose pieces drop off)...develop this awareness.

Trite but effective: make lots of threats; sooner or later, your opponent will overlook one.

Mobilise your forces; don't try to go on a heroic mission with two or three pieces; you will most likely be rebuffed with loss of time.

If you really can't think what to do, improve the position of your worst piece.

I usually try to force my opponent to castle which allows me to come in with my bishop/queen/rook and checkmate him while he's boxed in the corners. There's an entire page on the web dedicated to setting up checkmates when your opponent castles.

If your opponent doesn't castle and has freedom of movement always have your queen setup with a bishop and a few pawns and corner him. ALWAYS protect the queen because it's the ultimate attacking piece, if you lose it you will be severely crippled offensively.

It's just habituation; you'll develop this vision over time.

Having said that, your strategy is a good one...gain a material superiority and then exchange down ruthlessly...the idea being 10 vs 9 may be good, but 2 vs 1 is a whole lot better. So don't stress about not recognising mates in the middlegame...if you can hoover up material, and then simplify, well, that's just sensible chess.

Over time, you'll develop your vision of the basic checkmates

eg the simple back rank mate:

and progressively more complex...

A perennial favourite, smothered mate:

White wins by Nf7 Kg8, Nh6 Kh8, Qg8 Rxg8, Nf7 mate :)

The better you get, the more you see the board in terms of patterns or chunks, instead of pieces and moves, but there's no shortcut; you have to develop your pattern recognition with experience.

BTW, LPDO (loose pieces drop off) will improve anyone's game, at virtually any level.

Black's 11...Bd6 leaves both Bd6 and Nh5 loose, and after the double attack 12 Qd1, black loses one of them...oops.

Most chess matches aren't won with spectacular checkmates-- they're won by gaining an overwhelming material advantage, very often by queening a pawn ("material" here basically means "pieces"). Lots of games end when one player realizes that he can't stop his opponent from queening a pawn and resigns.

It's good to look for mating opportunities (sometimes you can use the threat of mate to win material). But you will usually win your matches by gaining (and exploiting) material advantages.

In case you don't know how much pieces are worth:

Queen= 9 points
Rook= 5 points
Bishop = 3 points
Knight = 3 points
Pawn = 1 point

The player with more points on the board usually has an advantage (unless he has a markedly worse position).

Castling usually makes the king safer and brings a rook into the action. So it's very often a good move and in most matches both players will try to castle sooner or later.

Freedom of movement is not a big plus for a king because he can only move 1 square and it can mean that he's exposed to long range attack. Ideally you want your king cozily in the castled position protected by three pawns.

Good advice not to attack with the queen alone--she can't accomplish much without backup and her unparalleled value means it's usually impossible to effectively defend her with a piece. So she has to run away when attacked by a knight or any defended piece, and this often means that your opponent can develop pieces while chasing your queen around the board.

Play against the computer. Work your way up from level one until you can't beat the computer, and then keep playing at that level.

Or find somewhere to play online.
