Why is Cincinatti the 5th Slam?

why is this known as the 5th slam?

when the atp masters cup pays way more, is counted more seriously almost like grand slams, what places it over miami, indian wells, rome, why is this the 5th slam?

I thought Indian Wells was considered the 5th slam but maybe that's just me, but I could've sworn I had heard that somewhere

You have, from a few people who are intent on trying to take that title away from Miami. Miami got it years ago back when IW was still a one week event held at a hotel. :)

There's never been any consensus that Cincinnati is the 5th Slam. It's just a marketing ploy to represent that it's a big, important tournament with a great field.

They used to say the same thing about Miami a few years after it started, and that would have been a more substantive claim since at the time, Miami had a full 128 draw and played best of 5 every round. But, this didn't last long. Anyway, again, it was just marketing.

It's like how the golf media calls the Player's Championships at TPC Sawgrass the 5th major. Nobody actually thinks it's a major. It's just recognition that thetournament is something more than other non-major golf tournaments.

I hate the Cincinnati masters tournament. The only tournaments that should be considered for the unofficial title in my opinion are Indian Wells, Miami, and the World Tour Final. Kinda would be interesting if they had a grass masters tournament- just for some extra flair.

Davis Cup and Olympics go after majors. So happy Nadal has won those! He is the ultimate champion!
Davis Cup is underrated because Americans only won once in 10 years. Davis Cup is huge and should be considerer in the GOAT discussion!!!

Monte Carlo is the 5th slam!!

Don't tell Sureshs or he will mess the GOAT's slams recount again.

Thanks to him, I am currently not sure of how many slams Federer has (something between 13 and 20 I think) and the last thing we need is another twist now that we are trying to figure out the maths.

By the way, the REAL 5th slam is the Zaragoza F10 Futures... did Federer win this? He can't be the GOAT if he didn't.

Our expert sureshs declared Cincy to be the 5th slam, thinking that Nadal would win it.

Sadly, that did not happen.

That one thread also launched sureshs into the TW Posters Eternal Hall of Fame (along with other greats such as Fedace).

Miami has been tagged the 5th slam for decades.

Indian Wells was on it's way to being shipped out, and it's in the desert.

Key Biscayne and South Beach can't be beat.

^^^so true... people refer at kinky as if it was the 5th... no way. it's the real deal, el numero uno, the OG, the mac daddy... the uber slaminator...

i dont know what i am saying!...

On the thread about who is a better hardcourter out of Roddick and Nadal, didn't somebody say Roddick b/c he has two Slams :) Then their reasoning was that Roddick had won Cincinnati. The hilarious part is, I don't think they were being sarcastic.

In any case, it all comes down to preference. Different tournaments mean different things to different people, just like the Slams

BTW, even if a MS event was considered the most prestigious, shame on anyone who refers to it as "the 5th Slam" b/c NOTHING even comes close.

Actually Fed did real good in the Cincy Tournament. It definately showed his GOATness. He deserves big time props for that result.
