Nastase antics...

I remember some antics Nastase used to do:

1) I saw Nastase play Onny Parun at Roland Garros years ago. Onny had won the first two sets, when Nastase began mimicking Onny's unorthodox service motion. The crowd laughed and snickered, Onny got irked and lost his rhytm and concentration. From then on, Nastase turned the match around and finally won.

2) Nastase was playing Connors, and, at a given point had an easy setup at the net. He then pointed towards the right with his left hand, then smirked and hit the volley to the left. Connors fumed...

3) Nastase loved hitting volleys behind his back or hitting a drop shot back with the handle of his racket... all to deliberately irk his opponent...

I got to watch a "private" exhibition when I was younger between Nastase and a decent young Belgian player at the time. My coach at the time was his doubles partner in the Davis cup team back in the day and organised it. There were only about 20 of us there. At one time he was literally sitting on a plastic chair on the T during the warmup. He played two games (which he still won) with his left hand. He returned serve at one point facing the back of the court. The other guy was not pleased :). Age definitely mellowed him out I think.

I read in Pat Cash's book that he played Nasty on grass early in his career which sounded like a match that Pat shoud've been good enough to win. But he said that Nasty took the court and before warmups started screaming, "What is this?"

He did it repeatedly until they could get the tournament referee out onto the court. Nasty then complained about the quality of the towels or some silly thing like that. He did it to make a young guy like Pat focus on something else besides the match, and it worked. Nasty won in straight sets.

i heard a story about him playing at Madison Square Garden against Grebner where Grebner before the match called Nastase a Romanian goat herder. This pissed Nastase off so he basically bageled him and on match point he put away a shot with the butt of his racquet which really pissed of Grebner. He then told the press that's how goat herders play tennis.

For some reason i have trouble finding anything on good in regards to historic tennis. Maybe because Nastase wasn't American?

another factoid is that he was the first player to become the World No. 1 in the ATP Computer. An interesting tidbit completely missing from his Wikipedia page.

Also youtube is devoid of any videos of him in his prime. Most of the footage is of him in his late 30s or 40s or even 50s just messing around. Not much of him in his 20s when he really cleaned up.. EDIT: NM found this nice one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lf4wrrpzdYc

I think it was the Forest Hills qf of 1972, when Nastase beat Graebner. After beating him easily, he told to the press:

"you see, the ref calls me MR Nastase. You see why? I am Mr...but Graebner´s not called Mr Graebner. You know why? ´cause he is an animaaal, yes, it is graebner´s aneeemaaal."

My favourite Nasty story is when he showed up for a doubles match with Arthur Ashe - in blackface makeup!

Wow, that's WAY over the line. See this on Ashe vs. Nastase in 1975. Perhaps some here may know more about the 1975 Masters match between them. Did Ashe retire because of Nastase's antics that day?

See: http://www.manythings.org/voa/people/Arthur_Ashe.html (interestingly the article mentions that Ashe first suffered from heart problems in 1975, though he was seemingly in excellent physical condition.)

In 1975, Arthur Ashe played against Ilie Nastase in the Masters tennis games in Stockholm, Sweden. Nastase was out of control. He delayed the game. He called Ashe bad names.

Finally, Arthur Ashe put down his tennis racket and walked off the tennis court. He said, "I've had enough. I'm at the point where I'm afraid I'll lose control. " The officials were shocked; Ashe was winning the game. One official told him he would lose if he walked out of the game. Ashe said, "I don't care. I'd rather lose that than my self-respect. "

The darkest hour of Nastase was a match with German Hans-Juergen Pohmann (later a TV reporter) at Forest Hills. Pohmann cramped or played possum or both, and Nastase got outragious, spit at Pohmann and called him Hitler. It came down to a fist fight in the locker. A few years later, still at USO Nastase was involved in that infamous match with McEnroe, when Frank Hammond disqualified Nastase, but let him play again, when the crowd went wild and the organizers intervened.

In Roscoe Tanner's autobiography, Tanner talks about his R32 match with Nastase at the 1974 US Open and how Nastase kept looking and talking at the side of the crowd whenever Tanner was about to serve on important points. Tanner eventually had enough and went up to the net and demanded to Nastase's face that he stop with his antics, or else. Tanner beat Nastase after coming back from 2 sets down, and went on to reach the semi finals, where he lost to Connors.

We have to mention Nastase using a spaghetti strung racquet to end Vilas' 46 match winning streak and 53 match clay-court winning streak in the 1977 Aix-en-Provence final. Vilas' semi final opponent, Eric Deblicker, had tried to win with a similar racquet.

Nastase liked to "moon" folks left and right. Somehow Connors joined him and picked up on this habit. Connors mooned the crowd in NY at the US Open once in about 1978-1979 I believe.

You wonder how Federer, Nadal, Djokovic would deal with Nastase's antics. Any opinions?

I wonder why they don't show that one during the USO rain delays. It was televised at the time and I'm sure it's somewhere in the CBS vault.

There's one story about Nastasi which I still laugh at whenever I hear it. As the story goes, Nastasi had his credit card stolen. He said he didn't bother reporting the theft because whoever stole it was spending less than his wife.

read nastases book it is hillarious.

dont think hes mean was just playing to the crowd
I loved Nastase, but his "playing to the crowd" was very calculated in most cases - designed to throw his opponent off, and to give him an advantage. Not exactly sportsmanlike. And he was often insensitive or downright vicious when it came to his comments; he may not have meant to be mean, but he was, at the very least, remarkably thoughtless. He was an amazingly talented, completely self-absorbed jerk who could have been the greatest player of all time if his head hadn't been so messed up. What a waste of a gift.

I haven't heard that one. Perhaps this is the story you are thinking of:

"At the Royal Albert Hall in London, Nastase's mimicry angered Clark Graebner to such an extent that the American climbed across the net, grabbed Nastase by the shirtfront and threatened to crack open his head with the racket. Nastase later defaulted, claiming he was "physically terrified." Graebner was silently acclaimed as a savior by touring pros everywhere."

* * *

"Probably the closest Nastase has ever come to being embraced by an opponent was when Graebner came to the brink of maiming him at the Royal Albert Hall last January. Nastase always has had trouble beating Graebner and the two had clashed before. This particular act started after Nastase hit a net cord winner that Graebner just failed to reach. The umpire, however, ruled that the ball girl had mysteriously run into the doubles lane and had caught the shot before Graebner had a fair chance; a let was called. Nastase reacted with fury. "No play two, my point," he shouted. The decision stood.

Graebner went on to win the game and, as the two changed sides, Nastase began his routine. He had some neat words for Graebner, some hand signs for the umpire and other things for the crowd. As he was preparing to serve, Nastase looked up and saw Graebner at the net motioning him to come forward. The Rumanian went ahead and served into the empty court, then mimicked his opponent by motioning Graebner to come to him.

Graebner jumped the net, grabbed Nastase by the shirt and said, in the words of the Rumanian, "You not doing me what you did Richey in Paris, you b*****d. You cut this——out or I crash your head."

They played out the set, during which Nastase did not win another game; Graebner rifled a couple of forehands into the audience; the ball girls cowered in terror; and the umpire lost all track of scoring. Luckily, the tension did not last much longer, for Nastase abruptly quit, saying he felt "threatened."

Graebner will not discuss the incident publicly, claiming that it is "water under the bridge" and that now the two are friends who will play doubles together this winter. But Nastase still insists he was wronged. . . ."

PS: I also recall reading an article in "World Tennis Magazine" that, during a match, Nastase said something to Adriano Panatta about Panatta's sister following which Panatta went after Nastase and chased him off the court.

Wow what a maniac! Tennis needs some characters like Nastase, sounds like a fun guy to watch. Great stories thanks for posting them. Hope this threat goes on for 20 pages.

I was at BOTH of those matches. Scarred me for life, especially the one at Forest Hills. I was 6 yrs old, just starting tennis....and I could cut the tension with my lollipop. I did not 'get' the Hitler comment, but I remember it (my dad explained it to me and that was painful in and of itself).

Wow, that's WAY over the line...
Talk about the blackface thing. Yeah, man, that would NEVER go over today. I see that as a Mel Brooks/Blazin' Saddles thing. Things that were hilarious in their own way, in their own time.

Honestly I really doubt they would do anything different than want other classy players like Smith, Ashe, Borg did......nothing really. Maybe today with the strength of the ATP he would get punished off the court but I think the players would just step back and wait for it to pass on court - and yes few players back then did confront him but it was very rare and kind of weak. Maybe if back then a few of the guys would have confronted him for real he would have dropped the crap.

None of them have the stugots to give him the Clark Graebner treatment.

Funny thing, a friend of mine and I were introduced to Nastase at a WTC event by Raz Reid, my friend's coach, who was also playing in the event as I recall. Nastase was as gracious and polite as anyone I've ever met. And, BTW, he ain't 6' tall. More like 5'10" if that.

Nah, they'd do the same thing if pushed far enough in my opinion. Great recount, but don't you think that he would have lost a bit of height? On average, men lose about 1" of height per decade by his age. I ballboyed at a WCT match of his in Alabama. He was pretty strong from my recollection and I had a good seat.

I can't quite remember the context of his behaviour here, but I had a feeling it was something to do with him wanting or needing to be in the same clothing (ie - the same general 'look') as his doubles partner. In any event, I'm pretty sure Ashe cracked it for a laugh.

This was in 1974. He was very strong, very fit and muscular. About 5'10" 165lbs I'd say.

¿heard about the story of Connors saying to his old buddy

" hey dude, you may not have a house anymore" ( Connors was informed that an earthquake had hit Romania, but Nastase didn´t know anything yet, when both played an exo in the US).

As it´s said often, " with friends like those, who needs enemies?"

I saw Nastase play at Bournemouth (West Hants) in the British Hard Courts about 38 years ago. All the top players rushed between the courts and the clubhouse, trying to keep out of the way of mobs of autograph hunters. But Nastase seemed to spend the whole time hanging around the small sponsors tents on the main concourse, chasing and chatting up the gorgeous women wearing the rather sexy sponsors uniforms. Even then, aged 14 or so, I remember thinking that he had the best idea!

Yes, in that department, Nasty holds the official world record for open era (counted by himself), for pre open i am not sure, if one counts unoffical scores by Pancho or Art Larsen.
