Nadal says he doesn't get injured much

I saw this interview snippet and translation posted by cc0509 in another thread (thanks !), I hope this wasn't discussed on any other thread here.

I found Rafa's candour refreshing as he admits that he wasn't as seriously injured in the last 7 years as it is made out to be and that he couldn't have remained in the top 2 for so long had he suffered serious injuries (which is the truth). It is actually people like Delpotro and Tsonga who have lost almost over a year because of their injuries and yet if there were a random poll to be conducted here on who is the most injured player in the ATP, Rafa would win it hands down :)

So why do the Rafa fans believe their idol is forever injured and find an excuse for every single loss of his ? Why don't they realize that injuries and pains are part of tennis and every single player plays with some minor injury or the other most of the time , just that they don't speak about it all the time like Rafa does ? Why don't they have as much honesty as the guy himself to admit that if he was all that injured, he couldn't have stayed at the top for so long ?

I think he means real injuries. Something that happens during practice or an official match when he is not behind in score.

Its not like you can play at your peak when you pull a muscle, tear a tendon etc. His still in the top 2 because he never gets major injuries but minor injuries in the quarter/semis still means that you cant play at your best level, which is why the "nadal is injured thats why he lost" excuses come up.

Athletes push their bodies to its limit. You are almost always on the brink of injury.

Tennis is perhaps even worse since the body movement is in all directions, as compared to say track/road running. Even there, one always hears of injuries, surgeries, top athletes who quit the sport due to some injury that wouldn't go away, one would see people icing their knees or other parts before or after training.

So it's not surprising if Rafa or anyone else has "niggling injuries". In athletics, runners always talk of injury but no one makes a deal of it.

How often do top marathoners quit a race due to injury (recent examples, Gebrsallasie, and Paula Radcliffe who is almost always injured) but no one makes fun of them.

The whole point is that these minor injuries are not exclusive to Rafa. It is part of life for every tennis player. I have read some Federer interviews where he has said that most players including him play with some or the other injuries all the time.

So why does only Rafa get the "injured warrior" tag ?

I was wondering this myself. I honestly don't believe he gets injured that often. I think it falls on the fans a lot. I mean, Federer gets injured. But it's never blown to the proportion of Nadal's injuries because it just seems that Nadal's fans bring them up much more often and use them to explain losses. It's not Nadal who's injured half of the time.

Neither Nadal, nor his fans talk much about Rafa's injuries. It's the source of joy to haters to discuss them at length. I've never seen a Rafa fan who would wish Federer to be injured or ill. I've seen dozens of *******s wishing Rafa to break his legs.

Now another hater opened this thread and is having a ball. That's how all this injury tales start.

Rarely does any player step onto the court without some type of minor injury, the difference is other PR teams don't announce these little injuries to the media creating drama amongst the fans and disrespecting their opponents in the process.

If you have an injury like a broken bone or mono that will keep you from playing announce it, if you have a little muscle pull or finger burn STFU and play.

Easy, that's just about the first thing he says in a presser when he's been beaten. :-?

His uncle plays this to the hilt, too. How many times has he said thing like "Rafa's foot is broken so bad that he may never walk again?"

So, yeah, glad to know that it was mostly a bunch of crap, but I'd kind of gathered that anyway... ;)

1. Now where I have heard this line before. Was it veroniq or babbette ? So we seem to be close to a positive id on this pooster.

2. Calling others haters while calling them *******s. Wow ! Well played, Sir.

3. If there are "dozens", could you please show us a wee bit of evidence. Last time you said (I mean veronique said, sorry), that posters here wanted Nadal dead. I asked her to show some proof but she vanished.

4. Ever since you've "arrived" at this forum, you've been trying to spread hate. It's posters like you who do this. One has to wonder whether you are genuine Rafa fans, or are haters trying to give him and his fans a bad name.

I don't have a dog in the this fight so consider myself quite neutral.

There are definitely some Rafa fans on here who have a range of reasons (inc injury) for why their guy lost that day - none of which include 'the other guy was just better than him today'.

roflmao.

I mean, its ridiculous. they defend so hard that inevitably, they end up basically writing something to the effect of "Well, rafa wasnt really executing his shots that day"

which if you follow that statement to its logical conclusion is : rafa wasnt playing well that day.

which by implication means the other guy played better.

but of course, the ****ism is very strong and they dont see it that way.

This is very true indeed, and one of the reasons why I try to avoid "fanforums" as much as possible - including those of my own favourites.
The amount of ridiculous statements to be found at those is mind-boggleing, varying from 'sick, tired & injured'-opinions whenever the fav player sneezes on court, to absolutely pathetic hatred (most of it made-up) towards the 'rival(s)'. All of it fed by double standards, and an amount of blind idolatry Justin Bieber would be proud of. I find it scary to say the least.

The problem I think with Rafa is that his niggles and troubles get exposed too much by his team, and for whatever reason, his ****s always seem to run away with those, completely ignoring the fact that ALL top athletes get the same share of these kind of troubles (including those who are said to "never get injured", which is of course nonsense). No athlete is at his best 100% all of the time (or even close), and any player can have a bad day at times, bumping into a 'lesser' player rising above himself on that day, and hence that 'lesser' player might well end up beating the fav. It happens to them all once in a while and it's no reason to pull the injury card all the time which is indeed annoying.
I blame it on some kind of ignorance of what it actually takes to be a top athlete in a very demanding sport.

90% of the *******s on here are middle aged women , don't let their screennames fool you, like vernon or beast of Manacor, or Col. Mustard, or simply Bud:) all chicks, most with multiple accounts.

5% are homosexuals just looking for attention, when they aren't busy plotting their own fake kidnapping they post about Nadal.

4% are fake Nadal fans just screwing around

1% are young Romanians that shall remain nameless.

Accurate except Mustard. They are not a *******

I think that he's being raw here. Anyone that doesn't say DelPo's injury wasn't more serious than any of the smaller injuries that either Nadal or Novak have had are being disingenuous. Nadal has never had to come back from DelPo has come back from and is giving him credit for it. I've never seen Nadal act as if his injuries are worse than DelPo's, it's just that they all get lots of PR. Shoot, I have to wonder if the only excuse a top player can have for his sponsors is that they are injured. I wonder how these contracts are written.

To be quite frank, it seems to me that one can say that of most posters here, no matter who they support. I'm actually getting more and more disillusioned at this board in general over the typical postings from those that seem to post to each other and ignore all interesting posts. The shallow posts seem to be what generate hype, and once again, I see it among the same posters in general. I've been here for about a year, and it's starting to get stale watching the posts.

I'm just going to point out that most Federer fans will blame 2008's losses to Mono. I personally don't know how Federer could be so dominant for so many years without serious injury. Look what one year of dominance did to Djoker... body broken, kneeling on the court crying in pain against Delpo in David cup... 1-2 in the RR at the WTF, looking spent and wistful.

Anyone who plays tennis at any level knows luck is almost as big part of winning as anything else. Maybe you get the flu, maybe that muscle tears, ACL pops, maybe not, let cords, bad bounces, mis-hit winners... Maybe at 5-3 40-15 in the 4th set your "all or nothing" shot will skid the line for a winner, maybe not. Maybe at 5-3 40-30 in the 4th set the let cord lands in, maybe not. Look at all the bad luck Tommy Haas has had during his career. It's what makes dominance in tennis so amazing to me, whether it's Fed, Nole, Rafa, Sampras or whoever. Not only do they have what it takes, the chaotic universe let it happen.

He just tells the truth: he rarely had big injuries. Much less than some other players. He also gets a little bit more injuries than some other ones. End of the story.
Which happens with Nadal is that at the beginning of his career, everyone (former players "experts", journalists, tennis fans) said "he won't last more than 2 years, his game is too demanding physically, injuries will force him to stop". So, of course, he's more scrutinized than many other ones.
I still believe that he suffers from minor injuries more than some other top players though. His game is very physical, he gets no free points, and he has to pay the price. But of course, if some players can stay at the top of the game for years, it's because they are blessed with a very strong body and because they can avoid major injuries. And that's true for Nadal.
Now, I'm not sure that the Nadal fans are the ones who always talk about his injuries. If Nadal takes an MTO during a match (which is something that the other players do as well, and rightly so), you can be sure that there will be 4 threads on the forum and all the haters will post on it. If any other player takes one, nobody will talk about it. What's the difference? Nadal beat Federer many times when he was supposed to be unbeatable, many ****s will never forgive him that crime. And since Federer never takes MTO, Nadal can't either. The other players can, of course. As much as they want to.
