Texas won't be very strong this year but it'll be a good experience for a lot of these players to play opponents that are at another level... Texas will be MUCH better next yr. I think they could sign a 3rd recruit adding to their 2 blue chips... then u add Soren and Whitehead who will have a yearr as leaders and being towards the top can only help them next yr

They've got an English kid, Lloyd Glasspool, coming in January, UT can only hope he'll be as good as Corrie was.

I am certainly not a Longhorn fan, but I don't agree with the assessment of Chen and Holiner. I think the only problem I saw with them was that they were not ready to play in the top half of the lineup against top 10 teams in dual matches. Now that it appears that they will not have to play in the top half of the lineup, I think Texas is OK at 5 and 6.

I hope I'm wrong. :)

Most likely off on all accounts.
Texas is not that bad that 2 random 18 y/o foreigners will walk in and play 1 and 2. You probably thought Sitaram would play 1 when he came over too :oops:. Most likely Chen is a better player than these guys.

These guys will def help (hell a warm body would help). At best though, they'll be playing 3-4 in the spring. Which makes Texas solid at 5-6.

I have heard these guys will play towards the top, if not 1 and 2... time will tell.... and i see Chen and Holiner playing 5 and 6. No one thought Sitiram would play 1 or even close..... He needs to bulk up quite a bit.

Texas beat SMU 5-2 this weekend. Soren Olsen-Hess played and won in the one spot. Brand new freshman Glasspool played and won in the five hole. I believe they are still trying to get the paper work finished with the other brand new guy, Joey Swaysland, so he can get into the lineup.
There are going to be a lot of new faces this season, I'm excited to be at the first match in Austin.

I am looking forward to seeing Texas in person when they come to Charlottesville on February 3. I have seen some good Virginia-Texas matches in the past. Not sure this year's Texas team is comparable to the teams I have seen them bring to UVa in the past, but I will report what I see.

Can I ask why you are so negative about the team, the coach and the results? They haven´t lost yet, Soren is doing well as no. 1 singles and Lloyd is looking as a good signing too. Swaysland is an Australian Junior DC player, and as he settles he will be a great addition too.

Don´t you think you should give them a chance before you shoot it all down?

I think this team is better this season than last year. They are very deep, 3-6 singles should do very well. We lost many 4-3 matches last year with players like Vasko (forgive the spelling) and Camillone losing while playing at 4, 5, or 6. The young guys should fill that void.
Clearly they don't have a top 1, 2 players, but hell they didn't last year. Corrie and Damico didn't have the year I thought they would have.
I don't expect this team to blow anyone out, but I think we can grind through more close wins.

Also "teasips" even the dumbest of the Aggies quit using that word years ago.

Camillone never played in the lineup and Vasko had the best or the second best record for the team.

Sad how players leave and people rip into them

I am negative because I am tired of these "we might be good" seasons. We have done nothing to cope with OU and others getting better. I mean what's the best we can hope for this season? #12? And thats at the very best.

Actually he's pretty much living here when he's not on the road, he's training with Grant Doyle now, from what I understand.

I didn't know Roddick worked with Doyle also ? Anyway, I was down by UT today and saw Harrison working with Doyle and playing points against Fritz Wolmarans (#302). Ryan looked pretty good against Wolmarans, who is a big guy with lots of power.

Interesting, it looked like there were three other guys hitting next to RH today, working with Chris Haggard, any idea who they were ? One of them looked like Jesse Witten, but I'm pretty sure he has retired.

UT got smoked 7-0 by UVA. Clark, were there any good matches ? It looks like the #3 and #4 matches were pretty close, but the rest were pretty much blowouts.

Texas looks pretty weak at 5 and 6 at the moment. Glasspool and Sitaram played very well though. It will be very vital for Texas if Sitaram can get into form

UT acquitted themselves well I thought, especially for such a young team. Court 4 held match points against Courtney, but DC held on and finished him off, but truly could've went either way...Courtney still very rusty from the long singles layoff after the broken foot at the end of last year, but UT kid played well. And Frank was on the ropes at #3 too. I thought Frank dominated the first set, playing smart percentage tennis, very steady, but second set was the opposite with the UT player doing the same back to him. I did not see the TB, but apparently Frank dominated with some aces and aggressive play. Frank is ranked #1 right now, but that is not the same as "best player"...I think he is clearly third on the UVA team now (Domijan not ranked due to injury during the Fall and Jenkins has been lights out). Frank is tough to play against, but won't maintain the #1 ranking if Boland keeps him at #3 all year--he just won't accrue the points to stay there.

Feel UVA was a few notches tougher at this point in the season last year with Shabaz and Singh in the lineup, and Jenkins/Courtney as the best 4-5 tandem in the country. They will improve though.

Overall, despite the score, I was impressed by UT's toughness and a lot of their play--easily could've been 5-2 or even 4-3. We'll learn more about UVA playing #5 Florida tomorrow afternoon on very short rest.

Lots of good points, deuce games, etc. 7-0 did not tell the story of this match.

Before the season, I wrote off Texas' chances in the Big 12. But now that i have seen them, and Baylor and especially Oklahoma are stumbling in the early part of the season, I think that Texas is in the hunt in their conference. I will see what I think of Texas A&M on Sunday and compare.

I think Texas has a very good shot against North Carolina on Sunday.

Did you see Joey Swayland practice?? I heard he struggled to adjust with school, time zone, college style tennis the first few weeks. I wonder if he will get playing time soon.

Was David Holiner out of the line-up since he's kind of struggling in singles? Any news on Ben Chen's return?

Swaysland seems like a good player. Pretty good size and power. Has he played yet? Sometimes the January admits from overseas have to wait on the NCAA Clearinghouse to review their paperwork, and the NCAA can be really slow.

Ben Chen was there. I did not hear how his rehab is going, as I did not talk to the Texas team. Coaches never talk about injuries, because that sounds like they are making excuses. As a result, fans never get any info about injuries and when someone is going to return.

Don't know about Holiner. I would think he would be ahead of Lewis at this point.

I was glad at the fight from Sitaram and Glasspool but they could not finish big wins.

Texas A&M looked no better than Texas today against Virginia. I think that these two schools are pretty comparable in tennis level this year. What level that ends up being in the national rankings in May, I have no idea.

Sounds like two rebuilding teams had a close match. After graduating Ed Corrie and Kellen Damico, and having Jean Andersen turn pro, there is hardly any doubt that Texas would be considered a rebuilding team, with no seniors on the roster.
