The best rock instrumental of all time?

I must say that I'm very gladly supprised about the tracks you have mentioned here! :) Every track has been good or brilliant.
"Dream theater instrumedley" consisted partly of their "Erotomania" which came to my mind as a first suggestion. Instrumentals by Focus, Crimso, Weather report, Pink Floyd and Rush are also my alltime favorites! I'd like to add Sky's 'Scipio' to the list of greatest instrumentals ('Toccata' would be maybe even better, but I prefer now their own composition) and National healths 'Squarer for maud'. The last mentioned is pretty challenging stuff -not for the fans of easy listening-material.

G.O.A.T.
Tubular Bells Mike Oldfield

Anything that old Dutch band Focus did.. maybe something by Cream or Peter Frampton could be considered as well:)

National Health is one of the great underrated bands in prog--right up there with Bruford. That Canterbury prog scene had some fantastic stuff (Caravan long being a personal favorite).

^ Still most of us think that 'Peaches en regalia' is the best of all Zappa instrumentals!

Zappa's name brought to my mind little known german band from the seventies called Zomby Woof. I really like their instrumental 'Dora's drive': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EX1EpVA3_I

We sure have similar taste in music with RP! :) Caravan's 'Nine feet underground' I think is a masterpiece (little singing on it, but enough to make it non-instrumental) but most of the other stuff I don't like that much... rather simple and silly for prog, I think!

That's kinda funny, actually, because I prefer Caravan's sillier stuff to "Nine Feet..." To me, Caravan were masters at taking lightweight songs and "proggifying" them to give them more heft; I tend to lose some focus on their longer pieces (although they're certainly well-written/performed).

Re: the thread--I'd also have to add this magnificent pile:

or this ridiculously complex sign of a defective mind (time signature nuts, hold on to your triplets):

and we certainly can't forget this one:

Slightly off-topic--all prog fans should know these guys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlJKKtgreqw

It ain't instrumental, but it's pretty blistering. Get past Unfrozen Caveman Drummer and his gruesome facial expressions, of course.

chrischris, that ^^^ was retardedretarded

Your youtube entry (Wire) is not an instrumental. Let me explain to you what an "instrumental" is: an 'instrumental' is a song containing no vocals, be it sung, or rapped, or whatever.

No-ooooo vocals.

You posted an "unstrumental" 'cause you are mental.

Limpinhitter

G.O.A.T.
YYZ and Frankenstein

I already listed:

"Frankenstein" by Edgar Winter Group
"Hocus Pocus" by Focus
"Sissy Strut" by The Meters
"Pick up the Pieces" by Average White Band
"Soul Sacrifice" by Santana

. . . and, a few other less well known jazz/rock fusion classics.

At least it got you wired ...

Besides that , it was truly instrumental to some people in the late 70s in that they believe in their own
abilities and skills to make music.

Hands down, La Villa Strangiato. I can't think of anything better than the recording from Exit, Stage Left.

Enjoy.
