Federer and freak upsets

What's the last time Federer lost to a guy who NEVER ranked inside the top 10 (before or after)? I can't think of many in the last 7 or 8 years to be honest with you guys.

Makes the two weeks in clay season 2010 in which he lost to Gulbis and Montanes look freaky.

Ivo Karlovic (2008), Volandri (2007), Benneteau (2009), Hrbaty (2004). Other than the ones you mentioned, I think these are the only ones since the beginning of 2004.

That's freakin impressive.. averaging less than 1 loss per year to a non top 10 player.. INSANE !!!

Well after that match in Rome, Gulbis played great vs Nadal in SF, and almost beat Fed again in Madrid! Gulbis is very talented, might one day became a member of top 10!

I don't know wtf happened that day.

I think Benneteau was on fire that day, quite like he showed at Wimby this year, and it was a best of 3 match. Fed was quite meh the rest of the year in 2009 after he won RG, Wimby, broke the slam record, got married, had twins etc..

I don't really remember much from that match except for the lack of frustration once it was over, which was in direct contrast to a lot of Federer's losses in 2009

I remember thinking Benneteau played great though.

I'd hate to see Nadals random losses of non-top 10 players....

Lukas Rosol, Nicolas Mahut , Kohlschreiber, Garcia-Lopez, Baghdatis, Seppi, Dodig, etc spring to mind.

Florian Mayer last year, too. And Feli Lopez in 2010. I can't even be bothered to go looking back further than 2010.

Nadal never loses to anyone on clay so who cares about his random losses to journeymen on hard & grass.

His 7 RG titles + 8 Monaco + 7 Rome + 7 Barcelona inoculate him.

I think that FedEx doesn't have that many upsets, to be honest. He has been a very consistent player over the years. Quite a feat, really.

So what you're saying is, Nadal is also consistent, but only on one surface. Awesome.

Federer's early 2007 losses are baffling to me. I can understand that first loss to Canas based on the streak and the pressure along with it...but to lose the rematch in Miami, and then to get smoked by Volandri...that just doesn't make sense to me.
